Observation: Today went by pretty much as forecast, large lumpy and squally showers in the morning followed by a largely fine and improving afternoon with less and less cloud but a pretty keen and blustery Westerly wind (Max Gust 62km) which has finally eased back to a more moderate level this evening.
Current Recordings: Temp: 11.7c Going down, Humidty 75%, Rain: 3.0 mm, Average Wind Speed (10 Mins) 12 km/h W, Pressure 1016.1 hPa Rising.

NI thunderstorms possible today
«
Reply #9 on:

Showers and a few thunderstorms are dotting the North Island this morning.
The area of low pressure that helped bring thunderstorms to Canterbury yesterday will continue to move east today. At the same time, a strengthening west/southwest flow will develop over the North Island.
Showers are likely to pop up just about anywhere on the NI today. But for the southern two-thirds of the island, there is a risk for thunderstorms. Already this morning, reports of a few claps of thunder have come in from the eastern parts of the island around the Bay of Plenty.
Severe thunderstorms capable of producing strong winds and 10-15mm diameter hail are possible today as well. The greatest threat lies from Taranaki to the Kapiti Coat. A lesser threat extends east to Hawkes Bay and north to South Waikato. These thunderstorms would also be capable of producing heavy rain.

Blustery conditions for much of the North Island

Thunderstorms are possible for about the southern half of the North Island today. Any storms that do develop will likely have some strong and gusty winds associated with them.
But even without those storms we are seeing some rather windy conditions.
Blustery west to northwest winds have been whipping across parts of the lower North Island this morning. Reports have come in from Waikato, Taranaki and Wairarapa of very gusty winds.
Expect windy conditions to persist about the North Island today with the windiest conditions likely focused on the lower half of the island. Winds could approach gale force at times. Gusts associated with thunderstorms could reach 100 km/h. This is especially true for thunderstorms that develop about Taranaki, Wanganui and the Kapiti Coast.

Wide variety of Kiwi weather today

Squally showers, thunderstorms, gusty winds and brilliant sunshine have all been reported around New Zealand today.
Tracy Abbot said it was sunny in Hamilton early this afternoon. But Keith and Carolyn London reported rain and hail at Reporoa.
Lee McMillan in Dannevirke said more “sideways rain” was falling along with some hail.
Strong winds were reported all over the North Island, from Auckland to Bay of Plenty to Pirongia to Wairarapa and Taranaki.
Overnight thunderstorms rumbled across parts of the island as well.
On the South Island, the day started a bit wet for Cantabs, but it has since dried out. There are still a few showers being reported about the upper Mainland. The rest of the island is seeing a mix of clouds and sun.
Gusty winds, showers and even a few thunderstorms are still possible for the North Island this afternoon and evening, especially about the lower half.
