Port Robinson, North Canterbury 8.10am

Overcast high cloud. Temperature 15.7° after a low of 13.6°. Supposed to get to 20° before the southerly arrives this afternoon. Wind is already round to the WSW at 4-6kph, so I don't think it's likely to reach that high. No rain over the past 24hrs.

Port Robinson 7.50pm

Having been sceptical of the prediction of a high of 20°, I was proved wrong again with a high of 22.3° at 11.43am.
Temperature now 12.5°, but no sign of rain at this point despite having watered the garden. Wind from the SE at 6-10 kph.

Sunday's national forecast
« Reply #9 on: November 11, 2012, 09:57:00 PM »
A new system will be approaching New Zealand today. This will spread showers across parts of the country and some thunderstorms are not out of the question.

For the North Island, the day will start out settled for most areas. During the afternoon, a few showers could pop up about Taranaki, Wellington and the Kapiti Coast. By evening, there will be a better chance for showers from the western Waikato, south to Taranaki and then west to the Kapiti Coast and Wellington.

On the South Island, showers have already been falling along the West Coast early this morning. That will likely continue throughout the day. Showers are also expected about Nelson during the morning hours. During the afternoon, showers may begin to pop up over the deep south and eastern Otago.

During the late afternoon and early evening, rain is expected to become widespread about the lower half of the South Island. Some thunderstorms are also possible about the Catlins, through Clutha, Dunedin, eastern Otago and into the Canterbury Plains and foothills. If thunderstorms do develop, they would likely be accompanied by brief heavy rain, hail and gusty winds.

Government forecast MetService has issued a thunderstorm risk area for those regions for tomorrow afternoon.

Thunderstorm risk for parts of SI today
« Reply #10 on: November 11, 2012, 10:00:16 PM »
A front sweeping across the South Island today will help bring precipitation to parts of the Mainland. The instability associated with the front could be enough to pop a few thunderstorms as well.

Government forecaster MetService has issued a moderate risk area for thunderstorms for this afternoon for Canterbury, from Banks Peninsula south. This also includes North Otago.

WeatherWatch.co.nz forecasters agree with MetService that this area has the best chance for seeing thunderstorms today. However, we feel the thunderstorm chances are not as high for North Otago. We also feel that the risk for thunderstorms may extend into this evening.

Any thunderstorms that do develop could produce rainfall rates of 10-20mm/hour, hail 5-15mm in diameter, and gusty winds.

There is also a chance for thunderstorms along the West Coast, north to through Nelson.

Well we did get the rain - so far 11 mm of it at the rate at one stage of 29.4mm an hour now down to a steady 2.29mm hour. So far a total of more than we have had for the month which was 10.6mm.
