Upper North Island
Southwesterly breezes with sunny areas and some cloud, the odd brief shower possible at times mainly in the west however mostly dry. In Gisborne expect a few sunny areas at first with southwesterlies, by midday winds tend more southerly with showers which then clear at night.
HIGHS: 16-17 today for most areas, 15 in Gisborne.
Lower North Island
Sunny areas and some cloud with southwesterly breezes, a few brief showers possible for the west in the afternoon. Winds tending more south to southeasterly about Wellington through to Hawkes Bay, morning rain eases to showers which clear late afternoon or evening.
HIGHS: Mid teen temperatures for most, 13 to 14 about Wellington through to Hawkes Bay.
Upper South Island
Light winds about Nelson through to Canterbury today dying off from the southwest in the morning, mostly sunny weather with some cloud at times after a cold start. There may be a few brief morning showers about the Marlborough coastline however they will quickly clear with southerlies dying out. West to southwest breezes on the West Coast with sunny areas and some cloud. At night a southwest change moves into Canterbury bringing some cloud and a few further showers with snow flurries to 500m, any snow accumulations will be quite limited or non existent as precipitation amounts are not high, in the order of 1cm so it may not be enough to settle.
HIGHS: Mid teen temperatures about Nelson through to Canterbury and on the West Coast.
Lower South Island
Mostly sunny in Otago with light winds after a cold start, some high cloud from afternoon then later in the evening a southwest change brings some cloud and a few showers with a few snow flurries to 500m. Westerlies freshen about Southland and about the western ranges during the day with increasing cloud, a southwest change in the evening brings a few showers and snow flurries to 500m which clear at night.
HIGHS: 15-16 degrees about Otago, 13-14 in Southland today. Cool on the western ranges with 12-13 degrees expected.

Conditions today, cool with southwesterlies
«

The title sums up the conditions for today in the North Island, in the South Island southwesterlies generally died away this morning although another front is lining up in the far south ready to move onshore later this afternoon or evening.
Temperatures are a little cool around the country due to those southwesterly winds, also the air in general is cold lower down in the atmosphere and not likely to support warm temperatures at the surface. The Bay Of Plenty however being a little sheltered from southwesterly conditions has the high at the moment of 18 degrees while Auckland relatively not far away is chilly on 13.6 degrees.
West to southwesterly winds are quite breezy in a few places, in Southland and also western areas of the North Island from Taranaki through to Kaitaia winds are averaging 30 to 40 km/h.
Showers are now mostly restricted to the east coast of the North Island as the remains of yesterday’s front clings on there, there was also one or two showers in western areas of the North Island this morning however they are easing and it is mostly dry now. For the past 24 hours Taranaki has received the most rainfall with between 10 to 16mm falling.
