Low looking to stay to the north, finally some settled weather soon
« Reply #1 on: October 22, 2012, 11:13:37 PM »
Last week looking into charts for this week there was some potential for a low pressure system to form to the north of New Zealand and possibly cause heavy rain issues for the North Island early this week. The main candidates being Northland, Coromandel, Gisborne and Hawkes Bay. However it does look like this low will mostly keep away and we are finally set to have a spell of settled weather this week although the West Coast of the South Island is likely to get a few showers from time to time.

Tomorrow there is likely to be rain in Northland clearing later in the evening and there will still be the odd shower about north of the Waikato in the morning and early afternoon, a few showers may affect the lower North Island and lower South Island also. By Wednesday the weather is looking very good for most places with light winds, Wellington will get increasing northerlies. Cloud and showers will develop later in the day on the West Coast of the South Island.

Thursday sees a front moving north over the country however it weakens considerably the further north it goes, mainly this will see showers for the West Coast of the South Island and south of Timaru on the east coast. Friday see’s an anticyclone taking control coming in from the west.

While it will be fairly settled this week Aucklanders are likely to have breezy southwesterly winds on Thursday and Friday with a few areas of cloud so the temperatures may feel relatively a little cool on those days.

The only potential for any weather causing issues may be later on Wednesday where strong northwesterlies are likely to build in inland areas from Otago up into Canterbury, they will ease later in the night or towards dawn on Thursday however.

Risk of frosts tonight, settled for most tomorrow
« Reply #2 on: October 23, 2012, 08:20:04 PM »
A ridge will extend over the upper North Island tomorrow while a westerly airflow lies over the South Island and lower North Island, this means settled sunny weather is likely for most around the country. The only spots of contention will be about South Westland where cloud and the odd shower will develop from afternoon, those showers spread a little further north later in the evening.

WeatherWatch.co.nz forecasters expect mild temperatures along the eastern coastlines of both Islands for Wednesday getting to 18 to 19 degrees, many North Island areas are likely to get into the high teens also however from Taranaki through to Kapiti westerlies and some cloud will keep the temperature in the mid teens.

Later tonight conditions are likely to get a bit cool at the surface mainly in the North Island, parts of Waikato could get down to 1 or 2 degrees. Central North Island areas are likely to have a light frost by dawn.

In the South Island while it will get cold overnight frosts may just be out of the equation however sheltered eastern areas from Canterbury through to Marlborough risk a light frost in the morning, 2 to 3 degrees may be more likely however for growers it will be something to keep an eye on. Inland parts of Marlborough and Nelson are other places the may be in line for a light frost.

Nothing spicy in the weather for the short term
« Reply #3 on: October 24, 2012, 11:44:13 PM »
The weather coming up isn’t spicy enough for me to labour on about something exciting, there just isn’t much to talk about in regards to tomorrow’s weather. There is a low to the north of the North Island that does get a little close however mainly this will bring some cloud and southeasterly breezes to the far north.

For this evening though strong winds from the northwest are likely to develop particularly in inland areas of the South Island then easing tomorrow morning with the passage of a weakening front.

There will be some rain on the West Coast of the South Island which will ease to showers tomorrow morning, showers about the lower South Island also ease during the day and clear in the evening.

Still, there will be some pleasant weather tomorrow for the North Island again, westerlies may bring some cloud to the likes of Taranaki through to Kapiti.

So when is our next window of interesting weather going to come by? Interesting to me means thunderstorms. Well, this coming weekend. A chance of thunderstorms mainly in the west of the South Island on Saturday then in the west of the North Island later on Sunday. North Islanders are likely to have a reasonably pleasant Saturday though with warm temperatures so have no fear the weekend will not be a wash out, mainly this system starts to cause issues for the 2nd half of Sunday onwards.

Great weather in line for tomorrow
« Reply #4 on: October 25, 2012, 11:50:33 PM »
With a ridge lying over the North Island and a westerly airflow over the South Island most places are looking to be sunny tomorrow with light winds.

WeatherWatch.co.nz forecasters are predicting sunny weather for the North Island with a little cloud at times here and there, winds will be from the west or southwest along western coastlines and from the east or northeast along eastern coastlines, temperatures for most regions are looking to be up into the high teens perhaps low 20’s north of Auckland.

The South Island will have great weather also mainly in the north and east, northeasterly breezes may pick up a little on the east coast during the afternoon but shouldn’t be too bad. On the West Coast some cloud will develop during the afternoon with showers or drizzle patches developing about Fiordland, rain moves in there at night. Southland will experience thickening high cloud during the day with northwesterlies increasing.

Temperatures will get into the high teens for the east and north of the South Island tomorrow also however more into the mid teens in Southland and along the West Coast.
