Heavy snow could fall in the hills around Wellington as a bitterly cold front lingers over New Zealand.
Snow falling across the country had closed major North Island highways, left a dusting on high Wellington suburbs, and disrupted travel in the South Island.
The cold southerly flow was expected to persist for the rest of the week, MetService said.
Heavy snow could fall in Wellington and Wairarapa above 400 metres, with lesser amounts down to 200 metres through to Thursday evening, a Severe Weather Watch from MetService said.
Many of the capital's hill suburbs woke to a dusting of snow on Thursday morning. Hail and sleety showers had moved on by sunrise, making way for a glimpse of sunshine.
The Rimutaka Hill Rd between Wellington and Wairarapa is closed.
