Settling weather for Monday
« Reply #1 on: November 18, 2012, 11:08:44 PM »
The cold air aloft and strong low off to our east will start to lose their grip on our weather tomorrow. That means the blustery, showery conditions seen today in many areas will be replaced with more settled conditions.

Winds will still be a bit breezy overnight and into early Monday morning for the lower North Island, but they will ease off as we head toward the afternoon.

Skies are likely to remain a bit on the cloudy side about the North Island as we begin the day. But skies will gradually become sunnier as the day wears on.

Monday is likely to be the first in a string of settled days. We will be keeping out eye on a low that’s expected to slide off the Australian coast on Tuesday. That could bring some rain to the North Island on Thursday. Otherwise, a fairly quiet weather week appears to lie ahead.

A few days of settled weather
« Reply #2 on: November 20, 2012, 01:40:06 AM »
After a weekend dominated by cold air aloft and plenty of unsettled weather to go around, things will be getting a lot quieter as we wrap up spring.

The settled weather will spread across the country today with most areas see a fair amount of sunshine. There will still be quite a bit in the way of clouds mixed in about the North Island, especially the northern half. But no precipitation is expected to fall from those clouds. Clouds are also expected about the northern tip of the North Island where a few quick, light showers could develop.

The lower South Island could also see a fair amount of clouds today. As the day wears on, an increase in the cloud cover is expected for coastal Southland and eastern Otago. Winds are expected to pick up a bit about coastal Southland.

WeatherWatch.co.nz forecasters think this will be the trend for the upcoming week. A low is expected to move off the Australian coast later today and will head toward New Zealand over the next 48 hours. However, it is expected to pass to the north of the North Island. It could bring some light precipitation and increased winds to the far northern North Island as it passes by on Wednesday, but that’s about it.

Ring a ding ding, did someone call a high?
« Reply #3 on: November 20, 2012, 01:42:14 AM »
Well even if the spirit of Frank Sinatra didn’t an anticyclone is likely to sit in the Tasman Sea for most of this week providing settled weather which is rather welcome, although Bay Of Plenty by the sounds of things does need some rain.

As always conditions are not perfect everywhere, a fairly weak southwesterly front will move northwards over the South Island tonight and pass out to the east of the North Island later tomorrow. Southland through to Canterbury may see a few coastal showers clear in the morning, then Marlborough could see a few in the afternoon and finally Wellington and Wairarapa in the evening.

The odd shower may affect Northland on Tuesday and Wednesday also due to areas of low pressure lurking to the north of the North Island.

Apart from the above mentioned issues Wednesday is looking like a great day for most with light winds and afternoon sea breezes. Morning cloud will break in the east of both islands to mostly sunny weather. In the North Island late southerlies may bring some further cloud to Wellington and Wairarapa. Late afternoon and evening there is the low risk of an isolated shower or two about inland areas of the upper South Island and the Waikato.

Thursday will start to see the high in the Tasman moving over New Zealand as a front approaches from the southwest, expect similar weather as on Wednesday with sunny weather for the majority. Friday looks settled once again although a few showers may move onto the far south of the South Island later in the day as the front in the Tasman nears.

No real rain until December - models
« Reply #4 on: November 22, 2012, 11:54:49 PM »
New Zealand is drying out - despite the efforts of fronts and lows that are constantly trying to bombard us from the north and south as spring continues.

WeatherWatch.co.nz says the latest various computer models do show some rain makers trying to move in to New Zealand but a belt of high pressure should protect most regions from any real rain.

"We're not saying there will be no rain at all but certainly the long range forecast for the next 10 days looks mostly dry and calm around the country" says head weather analyst Philip Duncan, who warned farmers back in late winter to be prepared for a very dry late spring.

"Rain makers are still there, but the current high in the Tasman is unlikely to go anywhere - stopping, or at the very least limiting, decent rainfall totals".

Mr Duncan says northern and southern regions will be more likely to see rain while inland and central areas of both islands are likely to be drier.

WeatherWatch.co.nz says the 10 day forecast for Auckland is for sunny and cloudy skies but dry with the chance of rain at 10% of lower for every day, except next Tuesday where it briefly lifts to a 20% chance of rain.

"A weak front in the Southern Ocean may penetrate this high early next week, bringing a few showers to the South Island and lower North Island. We have a low in the north also trying to get going - but for the most part I think we can expect dry conditions to prevail for the rest of November".
