Sunday's national forecast

Expect plenty of rain across much of the country today. A front will move across New Zealand and be the focus for the rainfall.
The majority of the rain this morning will fall about the central part of the country. A few showers are also going to show up about the deep south. As we get into the late morning and afternoon hours, we will see the focus for the rain shift mainly onto the North Island.
There is a threat for heavy rain about the North Island this afternoon and this evening. Heavy rain will be possible from Auckland south through the Waikato and then east to eastern Bay of Plenty and Gisborne. That means Auckland and Hamilton could see heavy rain late tomorrow. The best chance for heavy rain will be a bit further south in places like Te Awamutu and Rotorua.
Strong winds will also be possible today. The best chance for that will be about Wellington, Wairarapa and the Kapiti Coast where severe gales are possible this morning.
While the focus for rain will shift to the NI this afternoon, showers are expected to continue along the western regions of the Mainland this afternoon. The deep south will also likely see a few showers into the late afternoon hours.
About the only part of the country that is expected to stay dry today is eastern Canterbury. But even here there is still a low risk for showers.

Severe weather threat update

Heavy rain and strong winds are expected across parts of the country today. A few thunderstorms are also possible.
The main threat for thunderstorms today will be along the western regions of the South Island this morning. That threat will then shift north for this afternoon. The risk area should set up across the central North Island, including places like New Plymouth, Hamilton, Te Awamutu and Taupo. Any storms that do develop could produce small hail, heavy rain and gusty winds.
A more iminent threat for heavy rain exists across parts of the South Island this morning. Government forecaster MetService has warnings for heavy rain in effect for Westland and the Tararua Range this morning. The heavy rain threat in this area should ease for this afternoon.
Strong wind warnings are in effect for Wairarapa and Wellington. 120 km/h gusts are possible for Wairarapa until about mid-morning. The threat for strong winds will be easing for Wellington early this morning.
Additional warnings may be required late this morning as the situation is closely monitored. WeatherWatch.co.nz will keep you up to date and pass along MetService warnings if and when they are issued.
**UPDATE** At 8:23 am, MetService lifted all warnings. That means that no warnings are in effect at this time. However, the threat for additional severe weather still exists for this afternoon and this evening.

Snow could tie up mountain passes overnight

Most of the precipitation around New Zealand this afternoon is found about the central North Island.
There are a few showers falling on the West Coast of the South Island, but that’s about it for Mainland precipitation.
That will likely change tonight as another surge of energy and moisture comes ashore. However, not all the precipitation fall as liquid.
Rain may change to snow in some of the higher elevations. Falling snow and settling snow could lead to travel problems and for that reason, government forecaster MetService has issued the following Road Snow Warnings.
* Lewis Pass- Rain is expected to turn to snow before dawn on Monday. 10 to 15cm could settle on the top of the pass with lesser amounts to the lower levels. Snow should ease during the morning with just some light snow showers possible into the evening.
* Porters Pass- Rain is expected to turn to snow overnight. 10 to 15cm could settle on the top of the pass before dawn with lesser amounts to lower levels. Snow should ease during the morning, but further snow showers during the late afternoon and evening may bring another 2 to 5 cm to the top of the pass.
* Lindis Pass- Snow showers are likely overnight and 2 to 5cm of snow may settle on the top of the pass by sunrise. A few additional snow showers are likely in the afternoon with up to another centimetre of snow settling.
* Arthurs Pass- Rain is expected to turn to snow before sunrise on Monday. 10 to 15cm could settle on the top of the pass with lesser amounts to lower levels. Snow should ease during the morning, but further snow showers are possible into the evening.
