Observation: Well my rain prediction of two days ago almost came true. but in the evening not the morning. Normal recent service this morning, warm, sunny with some high cloud and the SW Wind, cloud got heavier and more menacing during the afternoon as did the wind and the light misty drizzle started falling around 6pm, been off and on since then, the outside carpet feels just damp, but it now seems to have retreated to the kaimai Ranges, not even enough to register on my ststaion or in the manual rain gague. The SW wind, much stronger today eased back for a period when the drizzle came in but it is back up again now. Time will eventually tell but that looks like all she wrote on the rain front.

Current Recordings: Temp: 16.8c Steady, Humidty 99%, Rain: 0.0 mm, Average Wind Speed (10 Mins) 23km/h SSW, Pressure 1018.2 hPa Faling.

Weather to be watching today, windy in the middle
« Reply #12 on: December 02, 2012, 10:05:42 PM »
The current front going over us is fairly standard, rain on the west coast with drier weather out east in a northwesterly airflow. Rain this morning may be heavy on the West Coast of the South Island however it will ease to a few showers which then clear.

The main feature to point out for today is strong to gale northwesterly winds, mainly about the upper South Island and the lower North Island. Westerly breezes will be strong about the upper North Island today also however perhaps not strong enough to get to gale force, there is a low chance gusts may reach this speed however particularly in the west.

Gale force northwesterly winds are likely about Cook Strait and Wairarapa this morning, strong northwesterlies are also likely about southern Taranaki through to Kapiti. In the afternoon gusty northwesterlies move into Hawkes Bay and Gisborne but  most likely will not to reach gale force potential, then easing in the evening.

The usual warm temperatures in the east and temperatures in the high teens / low 20’s out west is likely for both islands so hopefully the weather plays ball with your plans today.

Christchurch has turned on a fantastic day with temperatures reaching between 30 and 32 degrees across the city this afternoon, additionally winds have been very light. However, and there is always a however to mess with your joy, a southerly breeze has developed on the southern edge of the city recently so it will bring temperatures down a bit.

The Santa Parade down Riccarton road must be a real hit today with the warm weather upon us. And my first “Be a mint day for the beach” comment came through today on facebook so a sure sign summer is here, thanks Shannon Dillion.

But what else is going on? Well it is certainly windy about the lower North Island, currently Palmerston North is experiencing wind gusts up to 75 km/h. About the Southland coast winds are also fairly breezy with 65 km/h gusts from the west. Southland has had a fair few windy days recently so some calm might be appreciated by the locals at some point soon.

Most of the North Island is shrouded under a layer of cloud with some rain in the west south of Auckland, the South Island’s West Coast is mostly cloudy also with a few drizzle patches about.
