School Holidays to start with settled weather is the title of Weather Watch's forecast for the weekend.

After a week of cold winds, hail, snow, thunderstorms, gales and rain, families heading away for the start of the school holidays will be pleased to know the forecast looks good...at least to start with.
WeatherWatch.co.nz says ideal skiing and travelling weather will move in this weekend as a large high drifts in from Australia and helps push the wintry southerlies out east of the country.
"The forecast looks great this weekend, a few clouds possible in some coastal areas otherwise sunny and frosty" says head weather analyst Philip Duncan.
"All of the ski fields have enjoyed snow this week, now we have a big high coming in for this weekend which often brings clear skies and light winds to alpine areas".
However WeatherWatch.co.nz warns motorists to be aware of black ice over the next few nights and mornings  "After the snow and rain the roads are wet and we don't have the best conditions to dry that moisture up.  At night, when freezing temperatures arrive, those wet roads freeze over to create black ice. It's invisible and like driving a vehicle on wet slippery glass".
Black ice is forecast through many South Island areas that have had rain or snow in the past 24 hours and it's a similar story for roads around Central Plateau.
Over Saturday and Sunday the high will be locked in over New Zealand - but sadly, for holidaymakers, the next frontal system moves in on Monday.
"The wind and rain return on Monday and Tuesday, although it is likely to be considerably warmer with air being pulled down from the sub-tropics for northern and western New Zealand and winds from the northerly quarter elsewhere".

Weather Video: Calm weekend on the way, but unsettled next week
« Reply #2 on: June 29, 2012, 07:58:16 PM »
Philip Duncan and nzherald.co.nz bring you the forecast for the weekend and take a look at conditions coming in next week.  In a nutshell, a good outdoors weekend but next week looks wetter, warmer and windier.

*Please note - WeatherWatch.co.nz forecasters are now predicting a possible cold snap at the end of next week which could see snow to low levels in the South Island around the end of next week.  Too early to give any specific predictions but a risk for snow to sea level is there for Southland and Otago, borderline for Canterbury.  We'll have more details in the coming days.

A sunny start to July for most
« Reply #3 on: June 30, 2012, 08:11:59 PM »
A small area of high pressure will slide across New Zealand over the next 24 to 36 hours.

That means settled weather for the country.  Most areas should see plenty of sunshine too, however cloudy periods make continue in the north of the country due to a weak disturbance just north of New Zealand.

Temperatures will likely start off pretty cold, much like they did this morning.  Highs will make a run for the teens across most of the North Island and upper regions of the South Island.  The lower SI will struggle to break the 10 degree mark.

Monday will be another dry and settled day for the country.  But it will be the last one for a while.  Starting on Tuesday, many parts of New Zealand will run the risk for precipitation.  In fact, rain chances could start showing up as early as overnight Monday into Tuesday.

The best chances for seeing rain during the upcoming week will show up about much of the North Island and the upper South Island.  Tuesday and Wednesday will have the most widespread rain chances.  By Thursday, the rain chances could shift to just the western and northern sections of the NI.

Temperatures will moderate a bit this week.  We won’t be seeing summer-like temperatures.  But the colder than average temperatures should be replaced by readings that will be a few degrees warmer.
