How to get yourself a free trial of Quickflix
« on: June 15, 2012, 11:40:50 PM »
It might just be time to ditch the video store, with new service Quickflix offering a completely free week-long trial of their kiwi service.

The service launched in March with over 650 films and hundreds of hours of BBC television content. Plus, they've been adding hundreds of new films and hours of television for streaming every month since then.

While the service is normally $9.99 per month, you can trial the service without obligation and at no cost for a week.

We've checked out how the trial works and it's quite easy to follow. You must put a credit card into the system as you register, but you won't be charged for use in the first week. So even if you don't enjoy it as much as we think you will, then you can cancel at anytime in that first seven days without charge.

Orcon and Slingshot are also currently zero-rating the service, so downloaded material won't have any impact upon users of those ISPs' connections; however, others should keep a tab on their datacaps to avoid any bill shocks.

Supported devices include Windows PCs and Apple Macs, as well as Sony’s range of internet-connected Bravia TVs, blu-ray players, and the PlayStation 3. More devices will be added in coming months, including TVs, Galaxy tablets and smartphones from Samsung, TVs from Panasonic, and iPhones and iPads from Apple.

Yep - we are using Quickflix here. In fact we watched Siones Wedding 2 streamed last night.

For more recent releases:
Pay per view Streaming can currently only be done through a PC - you need to run silverlight on the device to get it to work. Streamed movies are $6.99 each for 48 hours watching. Quality is VHS-esque.

For older movies, a subscription (price varies - I think we are curently paying $9.99 per month) gives you access to a library of older releases. I've seen probably 50% of these but there is a good range between kids movies (eg muppets take manhattan) to adult movies in all range of genres. Not too much in the sci-fi space just yet though

Also as part of the monthly subscription you get access to the tv section - there are a growing number of titles here as well - series from Blackadder, Dr Who, Mighty Boosh, Pride and Predjudice, Robin Hood.

Given that a video rental is $7-$8 per night the monthly subscription seems good value

Once you have the subscription you can stream it on all the devices listed. we stream ours through a PS3 quite happily
Cheers, Andrew
