Tioga Road through Yosemite National Park was closed Tuesday, May 26, as a late-season storm moved into the Sierra Nevada. The road had only just reopened for the season. Bicycles were allowed through on May 14. Vehicles followed on May 15. Less than two weeks later, snow was back and the high-country route was shut again. Snow was forecast across the central and southern Sierra, with levels dropping to around 5,500 ft (1,670 m). Other high passes, including Sonora, Monitor and Ebbetts, also faced closures as the cold system pushed through. Across the wider U.S., the pattern is turning sluggish. An Omega Block is expected to build after Wednesday’s rain, holding mild afternoons, cool nights and below-average readings in place. Late May is not delivering a clean summer switch, particularly in the West. https://electroverse.substack.com/p/winter-keeps-nipping-california-nasas

Western Europe is hot because Western Europe is under a strong blocking high. A heat dome has built across the west of the continent, with high pressure, clear skies and sinking air driving temperatures well above average. Spain, Portugal, France and the UK are seeing the core of the heat, with parts of Iberia reaching the mid-to-high 30sC (mid-to-upper 90sF) and the UK forecast pushing into the low 30sC (upper 80sF to low 90sF). Under a strong upper-level ridge, air descends, compresses, warms and dries. Cloud formation is suppressed. Rainfall shuts down. Sunshine dominates. Because the pattern is blocked, the same air mass sits over the same region for several days instead of being swept away by the usual Atlantic flow. In other words: weather. Much of May has been below average across Europe, including the UK where (to the 20th) the month was on par with the Mays of 1696, 1681, 1680, 1676, and 1675 before the pattern flipped. Then the jet stream shifted, high pressure built, and the first serious warm spell of the season arrived. For ordinary people, that means sun, barbecues, pools, beaches, and pub gardens. For the climate industry, it means copy-paste panic. https://electroverse.substack.com/p/weather-is-weather-until-its-politically

https://www.weatherzone.com.au/news/a-bombing-low-is-brewing-off-wa-heres-what-makes-it-dangerous/1891382Explosive cyclogenesis is underway over the eastern Indian Ocean, where a rapidly deepening low pressure system is setting parts of southwest Western Australia up for a wild weekend of damaging to destructive winds, heavy rain, thunderstorms and dangerous seas. Models show the low’s central pressure plunging by an average of about 25 hPa in 24 hours, a dramatic pressure fall that can turn an ordinary low into a powerful “bombing low”. A low becomes a “bombing low” through a process called explosive cyclogenesis, when its central pressure falls unusually quickly in 24 hours. This rapid pressure drop usually happens when powerful atmospheric ingredients line up. On Sunday morning, model guidance shows an intense jet stream, roughly 9 to 10 km above the ground, with winds near 300-310 km/h over southwest WA (image 1). That is an exceptionally strong upper-level jet, well above the 180 km/h benchmark that EUMeTrain cites as being associated with developing explosive cyclogenesis, based on Lim and Simmonds (2002). This powerful jet helps air evacuate from above the low, allowing surface pressure to fall more rapidly.

Days before winter officially begins, Australians are getting a preview of what's in store for the next three months – and it might not be the season many were expecting. After a warmer-than-usual autumn, the Bureau of Meteorology's long-range outlook shows that much of the country is heading for a double dose of milder daytime conditions and warmer-than-normal nights. Meanwhile, the southern half of the continent is on track for a parched winter, with rainfall expected to fall well short of typical totals. https://www.9news.com.au/national/australia-winter-outlook-2026-weather-bom-warmer-days-milder-nights-less-rain-el-nino/a95a56e2-46fa-403f-8c7f-770b756e2065
