Venezuela has declared a state of emergency after two back-to-back earthquakes of magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5 struck, killing at least 32 people. A major search and rescue operation is under way after Wednesday's quakes caused widespread damage, especially in the capital, Caracas. Emergency crews are searching through the rubble of collapsed buildings while authorities closed the country's main airport in Caracas, suspended classes and mobilised health workers to respond to the disaster. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) warned that "high casualties and extensive damage are probable", and US President Donald Trump said the quakes - some of the strongest in more than a century - caused "a devastating number of deaths". https://twitter.com/i/status/2069923875844919724https://www.sott.net/article/507069-Venezuela-rocked-by-shallow-7-5-7-2-magnitude-earthquakes-900-killed-over-51000-missing-3300-critically-injured-UPDATED

As expected, southern Brazil is busting records. Santa Catarina’s official hydromet agency, Epagri/Ciram, says 49 municipalities fell below 0C (32F) on June 25 as Antarctic air settled over the state. At Major Vieira – Paiol, the minimum dropped to -1.7C (29F) on June 25, beating the station’s previous June record of -1.2C (29.8F), set on June 9, 2018. During the same outbreak, Urupema – Parque de Exposição hit -8.3C (17F) on June 24. Alfredo Wagner – Pousada Caminho fell to -1C (30.2F). Chapadão do Lageado – Florestal logged -0.8C (30.6F). Tubarão – Cetuba/Epagri reached 0.3C (32.5F). All are new June records (but from relatively short station histories). The broader cold was deeper still. Bom Jardim da Serra plunged to -9.2C (15.4F) on June 24 and -8.7C (16.3F) a day later on June 25. The former was likely a record too, but Epagri/Ciram stopped short of officially declaring one because the station history is too short. Urupema reached -8.2C (17.2F) on Thursday. Urubici fell to -5.9C (21.4F). South America’s chill is not confined to southern Brazil. Paraguay’s Boquerón region produced -1.4C (29.5F), which is “record cold” as per local reports. Chile’s Chillán fell to -2.6C (27.3F), with “récord histórico” wording circulating it. Argentina‘s Santa Fe and other central-northern areas also saw sharp cold and frosts. https://electroverse.substack.com/p/brazil-freeze-breaks-june-records

Brazil Shivers A brutally cold air mass has been locked over the Antarctic ice sheet for weeks. Now lobes are being whipped north into South America. Brazil’s national meteorological institute, INMET, says a frontal system crossed the South from June 22, dragging down temperatures across southern Brazil, the Southeast and parts of the Center-West on June 23 and 24. By June 24, the cold had settled in. INMET forecast frost on June 24 and 25 across southern Brazil, with lows below freezing in the likes of southern Paraná and highs struggling to an anomalous 10C (50F) in the Serra Gaúcha. Santa Catarina’s Epagri/Ciram issued the sharper warning. Its alert covers June 23 to June 25 and calls for intense cold, negative temperatures and widespread frost across the state, especially above 700 meters. In the Planalto Sul, lows were forecast to reach -8C (17.6F). A MetSul report for June 23 notes the chill is already biting in Rio Grande do Sul, including at São Francisco de Paula, Canela, Vacaria, São José dos Ausentes, Canguçu, and Caxias do Sul. Climatempo is on record-watch: several capitals, including Porto Alegre, Florianópolis, Curitiba, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Campo Grande and Cuiabá, could register stark low-maxes by June 25. https://electroverse.substack.com/p/brazil-shivers-natural-rhythms-dwarf

South Pole Falls Below -70C Again On June 22, the low at the South Pole Station registered a biting -71.3C (-96.3F). That makes eight days this month with a minimum below -70C (-94F). For several weeks now, a stark, colder-than-average air mass has sat over Antarctica, with temperatures in parts of the continent running more than 20C below the long-term average. Most of the cold has remained locked over the ice sheet. But in recent days, lobes of that cold air have been spilled north into South America. Santa Catarina, Brazil, opened winter with hard frost and subzero readings. Bom Jardim da Serra fell to -7.3C (18.9F), the state’s lowest temperature of the year so far. Urubici dropped to -3.8C (25.1F), with Urupema at -5.2C (22.6F). Central Chile is facing lows of -4C (24.8F) this week. In Argentina, the national weather service has issued cold alerts for parts of Neuquén, Mendoza, San Luis, Córdoba, San Juan, La Rioja, Catamarca, Tucumán and Jujuy. https://electroverse.substack.com/p/south-pole-below-70c-again-sunshine

France is in a heatwave this week. Nobody is pretending otherwise. Météo-France says an intense, durable canicule is underway, with more than 40C (104F) in parts of central and western France and local highs of 41C to 42C (105.8F to 107.6F). This is serious heat. But the mechanism is not mysterious. The Met Office describes a strong high-pressure system over western Europe, with sinking air suppressing cloud, allowing prolonged sunshine, and raising temperatures through compressional heating. That is weather. That is how European heatwaves form. And while western Europe receives the heat headlines, ignored are the larger cool anomalies covering the north and east: Also, Europe has paved itself. The EEA says the surface area of EU cities has increased 78% since the mid-1950s. From 1990 to 2006, EU settlement areas increased by 9%. From 2000 to 2018, artificial surfaces such as buildings and roads increased by more than 6%. The EEA calls this “soil sealing”: land covered by concrete, asphalt, buildings, roads, car parks and other hard surfaces. https://electroverse.substack.com/p/europes-asphalt-summer-cool-anomalies
