Illinois has led the nation in preliminary tornado reports for most of 2026, and after five were tallied during a severe weather outbreak on Wednesday, the state has surpassed its record for the most in a year. And it's only June. There have been 164 tornado reports in Illinois as of June 18, according to data from NOAA's Storm Prediction Center (SPC). The large number is mostly due to tornado outbreaks in March, April and June. Illinois had only one tornado report in May. Mississippi has the second-highest tornado count so far in 2026, with 82 tornadoes, exactly half of Illinois' total. https://www.sott.net/article/506961-Illinois-has-already-surpassed-its-record-year-for-tornadoes-with-164-reported

A powerful hailstorm caused significant damage to vehicles in Zhangjiakou, Hebei province, China, on Tuesday (June 16). Video from the scene shows shattered windows, large dents and broken windshields on multiple vehicles following the storm. A light-blue BMW is seen with severe damage, including punctures in the windshield and extensive dents across the bodywork. Large hailstones visible in the footage highlight the intensity of the weather event. South America Shivers South America’s winter is starting to bite. On June 17, Santa Catarina logged freezing lows in 16 cities, from the Meio-Oeste to the Planaltos, under a dry polar air mass. Bom Jardim da Serra fell to -6.7C (19.9F), the lowest temperature recorded in Brazil this year. INMET warned that cold would persist across southern and southeastern Brazil, with frost risk in the southern highlands and in the Serra Gaucha, the Santa Catarina highlands and southern Parana. Chile showed the same southern chill. The country’s official DMC daily bulletin listed Balmaceda at -5.3C (22.5F), Coyhaique at -2.7C (27.1F), Puerto Williams at -2.3C (27.9F), and both Temuco and Puerto Montt at 0C (32F). Farther south, Argentina and Patagonia add heavy snow to the mix. Forecasts and alerts point to snowfall across Santa Cruz and Tierra del Fuego, with parts of southwest Santa Cruz expecting 20 cm (8 in), and locally a lot more. Updates to follow. https://electroverse.substack.com/p/south-america-shivers-co2-cant-be

South Pole Below -100F While mainstream headlines highlight western Antarctic sea-ice loss, often with little space for the volcanoes sitting below or the ice gains most everywhere else, the continent is currently posting some brutally cold readings. On June 16, Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station fell to -73.6C (-100.5F). The daily maximum reached only -69.9C (-93.8F). This made for the South Pole’s first sub -70C (-94F) reading since September 3, 2023, when the station logged -72.3C (-98.1F). Other Antarctic stations were also in the freezer on June 16. https://electroverse.substack.com/p/south-pole-below-100f-north-atlantic

Western Australia‘s wheatbelt endured a record-setting midwinter chill on June 15. Cunderdin Airfield reached just 10.8C (51.4F), breaking its June low-maximum in books back to 1996. Northam reached 10.4C (50.7F), beating the 10.7C (51.3F) June low-max set on June 20, 1968. BoM’s wider Northam table, running back to 1907, lists one colder June low-max, the 10C (50F) from 1947, though this dataset isn’t fully reliable. The cold was widespread. Lake Grace reached 10.2C (50.4F), Corrigin 10C (50F), Hyden 10.9C (51.6F), Wongan Hills 11.7C (53.1F), and York 12C (53.6F) - all around 8C below normal. BoM observations also show how flat the day was. Northam ranged from just 8.7C (47.7F) to 10.4C (50.7F). Cunderdin from 9C (48.2F) to 10.8C (51.4F). The daytime warmth simply never arrived. By June 16, the cold had reached the lower west. Perth Airport fell to 1C (33.8F), with a grass minimum of -1C (30.2F). Gingin dropped to -0.8C (30.6F). Pearce RAAF hit 0.6C (33.1F). These readings are between 9C to 10C below normal. Snow is even considered possible on the Stirling Range. https://electroverse.substack.com/p/western-australias-wheatbelt-breaks

The High Arctic is entering melt season at the cold edge of the modern record. DMI data for daily 2 m air temperature north of 80N show 2026 running far below the normal June climb. The red line is pressed against the lower boundary of the 1958-2026 spread. Veteran meteorologist Joe #&@%i called the cold “unprecedented.” On June 12, the 80N average fell to -4.2C (24.5F). By June 14, it was still below freezing at -2.3C (27.8F). June is when the high Arctic normally pushes toward 0C (32F). Below that line, surface melt remains constrained. The public is fed amplification warnings, while the core Arctic basin is sitting at/near the coldest June level in data back to 1958. And the polar cold is not confined to the Arctic. Both GFS and ECMWF show a broad cold pool across Antarctica, including the South Pole region. https://electroverse.substack.com/p/arctic-cold-vs-the-melt-season-hottest
