On Sept 23, the city station reached just 25.9C (78.6F) — 5.9C (10.6F) below normal — breaking the previous September low-maximum of 26.1C (79F), set on Sept 7, 1992 (in IMD record books dating back to 1963). At Visakhapatnam Airport, the maximum reached only 26C (78.8F) — 7.4C (13.3F) below normal — edging the previous September record of 26.1C set on Sept 12, 1977 (in records dating all the way back to 1870). The chill stretched along the Andhra coast. Tuni reached just 26.4C (79.5F), 7.3C (13.1F) below normal; Kakinada ran 6.5C (11.7F) below average; Narsapur 5.8C (10.4F) below; and Machilipatnam 6.5C below. Farther north in Odisha, Gopalpur managed only 27.4C (81.3F), 5.5C (9.9F) below normal, alongside 96 mm (3.8 in) of rain. The cause was the deep depression over the Bay of Bengal, which crossed the north Andhra Pradesh coast late Sept 23. Visakhapatnam has never seen a colder September day in records dating back to 1870.

The Atlantic has reached late September without producing a single hurricane — the first season since 1914 to do so. As of the National Hurricane Center’s latest full-season tally, 2026 has produced six named storms, zero hurricanes and zero major hurricanes. Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE), which combines storm strength and duration, stands at just 6.3 — 92% below the 1991–2020 norm for this point in the season. The average Atlantic season would have produced roughly four hurricanes by now. Closest came Fay, which peaked just below hurricane strength at 70 mph (113 km/h). But she has now fizzled, with the NHC issuing its final advisory Tuesday, Sept 22. Not since 1914 has a season made it this far without a hurricane. That year ultimately finished with none at all, as did 1907. In 1905, the first hurricane did not arrive until Oct 8. Records before the satellite era are less certain, as storms over the open ocean could have gone undetected. The chief culprit in 2026 is straightforward: El Niño. Strong upper-level winds have generated exceptional shear across the Atlantic and Caribbean, repeatedly tearing developing storms apart. Dry air has also worked against development. Serbia’s mountains are receiving their first snow of the season Tuesday, Sept 22 — roughly three weeks ahead of schedule. A sharp cold front is sweeping the country, with snow forecast to 1,800 m (5,900 ft) during the afternoon. The highest reaches of Kopaonik, Stara Planina and Golija are all expected to see cover, with temperatures dropping to freezing at Kopaonik and Pančić’s Peak. Long-term climatological data, covering 1950–1994, put the average beginning of measurable snows at October 13. Antarctica’s exceptional 2026 cold is refusing to let up. On Sept 19, Concordia Station plunged to -81.4C (-114.5F), according to the Italian Antarctic Meteo-Climatological Observatory, a reading just a nudge above Concordia’s September minimum of -81.9C (-115.4F), set in early September 2007. While the Antarctic Plateau can still produce biting lows in September, by Sept 19 daylight is rapidly returning—making a plunge to -81.4C (-114.5F) exceptionally late. In fact, -81.4C is now Concordia’s coldest temperature ever recorded this late in the year. For those keeping track, the continent’s sub -100F run reached 11 consecutive days, Sept 5–15, before finally breaking on Sept 16, when Nico managed “only” -99F (-72.8C). The threshold was breached again the very next day, however, with Vostok now logging four straight days below -100F, Sept 17–20—and counting: -73.9C (-101F) on Sept 17, -75.2C (-103.4F) on Sept 18, -79.6C (-111.3F) on Sept 19 (the lowest Sept 19 in records back to 1973) and -79.8C (-111.6F) on Sept 20.
