  • ato2: No drama here yet, so will go mow the lawns.
    April 13, 2017, 12:03:18 PM
  • JennyLeez: Refresh Map Azzura. Think we are right now.
    April 13, 2017, 01:31:31 PM
  • ato2: Sun has disappeared and some light rain
    April 13, 2017, 01:56:48 PM
  • David: nothing much going in Auckland, light winds, just some very light rain around
    April 13, 2017, 03:19:45 PM
  • David: completely different picture to the weather warnings in place - system has tracked further east than expected
    April 13, 2017, 03:20:21 PM
  • ato2: Light rain here, not much wind. Met Service site doesn't sem to update much, if at all.
    April 13, 2017, 03:36:40 PM
  • Wolfie33: Opotiki - Generally calm but wet today, nothing like forecast yet, but Cooks winds have soaked in last 20 mins, house shaking, windows rattling & lights a flickering 19° / 990hPa / 64 k gust across town
    April 13, 2017, 06:15:01 PM
  • ato2: Near calm in New Plymouth.
    April 13, 2017, 06:26:24 PM
  • ato2: Almost dead calm still. Day's weather turned out nothing like the forecast for New Plymouth.
    April 13, 2017, 09:39:51 PM
  • JennyLeez: Gusting around 70km across Gisborne and Napier. Power up and down. Trees and power lines down. Rough night for sure.
    April 13, 2017, 09:53:39 PM
  • Babs: Wet and windy well I think it is to dark to really tell
    April 14, 2017, 06:36:53 AM
  • mark: 32mm rain today sofar light winds.in Bishopdale chch.
    April 14, 2017, 08:03:27 AM
  • Babs: Glory bee the bright shiny stuff is trying to appear
    April 14, 2017, 08:23:45 AM
  • ato2: Sunny morning, some darkish cloud, 17 degrees in New Plymouth
    April 14, 2017, 09:16:10 AM
  • ato2: Once again MetService got the New Plymouth forecast/its warnings totally wrong. Highest wind gust was 39 km/hr, 14mm rain fell in total. Crying wolf over 140 km/hr is over the top.the top
    April 14, 2017, 09:20:18 AM
  • ato2: vented.
    April 14, 2017, 09:20:30 AM
  • Rwood: To be fair though - the path of the low was always going to be difficult to predict and for a small centre a deviation of a few 10s of km would make a large difference.
    April 14, 2017, 09:43:25 AM
  • Rwood: Met got hammered for ages after Giselle/Wahine even though the forecast wqas essentially correct within the bounds of the technology available.
    April 14, 2017, 09:45:05 AM
  • ato2: True, I was being hard on today's forecasters but the pre event hype gets difficult to take.
    April 14, 2017, 09:56:36 AM
  • Rwood: Trouble is now the media only want "big " stories. I think Met could probably emphasise more strongly the bounds of error, ie present best & worst case scenarios.
    April 14, 2017, 10:12:24 AM
  • JennyLeez: Storm thankfully passed over for around 5 hours and by 1.00 all went very calm and the sky completely cleared. Was very weird as so quick. Warm and sunny today as if nothing happened. Now to go out clean up. Branches and leaves covering our property.
    April 14, 2017, 10:35:55 AM
  • JennyLeez: I am very pleased I listened to the warnings and had everything tied down. I have sent my man hither with check our village. Apparently our supermarket has lost its roof.
    April 14, 2017, 10:39:04 AM
  • TokWW: Tokoroa wind only got to 36km/hr SW and then westerly, near calm today mostly cloudy but there is some blue sky.  51mm rain yesterday and 76mm the day before.  Fairly minor overall.
    April 14, 2017, 11:31:32 AM
  • TokWW: They all forget about our greatest damaging storm that of Cyclone Bola which lasted for 4 days and wrecked havoc with storm force easterly winds over the whole NI while the cyclone tracked south in the Tasman Sea - a huge ball of energy affecting large areas, huge collateral damage, and that was only 29 years ago.  Short memories in  Met Office...
    April 14, 2017, 11:34:18 AM
  • TokWW: It came some ten years after Giselle/Wahine storm and was far more devastating over a wider area.
    April 14, 2017, 11:37:40 AM
  • Rwood: I think they were referring to the intensity - Bola hung around for days. Don't underestimate the Giselle damage - there was a lot in the South Island
    April 14, 2017, 12:10:51 PM
  • Rwood: But as Erick Brenstrum has written at length, the ex-TC of February 1936 was by far the most damaging storm of last century overall. His account makes fascinating reading.
    April 14, 2017, 12:13:04 PM
  • ato2: Re Bola: seems the Taranaki story is minimised....the constant high wind speeds did enormous damage and cost many millions.
    April 14, 2017, 06:42:35 PM
  • ato2: @RWood- you referred me to an article about the 1936 storm some years back. It was something else, that event.
    April 14, 2017, 06:44:13 PM
  • Wolfie33: Just for something different, thunder lighning starting up & a little light rain.
    April 14, 2017, 10:55:29 PM
  • Wolfie33: . . and heavier rain laced with hail . .
    April 14, 2017, 10:58:26 PM
  • Wolfie33: And passed, clear starey patch just  to the west, what fun eh!
    April 14, 2017, 11:03:50 PM
  • Babs: Windy with lots of overnight rain
    April 15, 2017, 07:12:41 AM
  • mark: cloudy 16c light northwest winds in Bishopale chch.
    April 15, 2017, 09:16:24 AM
  • Rwood: @ato2 - yes, had almost forgotten that. Re Taranaki, I get the impression that in the last 2-3 years big northerly rain events have been less common than in the overall history - but would have to check.
    April 15, 2017, 09:19:33 AM
  • ato2: @Rwood - could be the case, I think.
    April 15, 2017, 10:41:13 AM
