Manitoba shatters cold records, sets 20 new lows
« Reply #2 on: February 16, 2021, 05:37:59 PM »
Manitoba has broken records for the lowest temperature this snap past Saturday. The extreme temperature in the region setting 20 lows.

Although temperatures around this time of the year have often averaged - 20 C, Winnipeg dropped down to -38.8 C, which saw it break an 1879 record by 1 C, according to Brian Luzny, an environment Canada Met.

In the meantime, Shoal Lake broke its 1970 record by close to 6 C, while Norway House registered its recent low of - 44 C, which is lower than its last record by 5 C. Essentially, it is the coldest area in the Province. Luzny noted that they are currently breaking records each day.

He added that a few long-standing records have been shattered by quite a margin.

According to Luzny, Manitoba is seeing a cold snap, which has been the case around January and February. However, this time it seems the Province hit its peak this past Saturday but is possibly going to wind down in the days ahead.

Luzny noted that the Province will soon be making its way back to the temperatures they are used to this week. Most parts of Manitoba, especially Winnipeg, are currently under bone-chilling cold.

Record-breaking WINTER weather in Ontario
« Reply #4 on: April 25, 2021, 09:45:26 AM »
Welcome to Earth Day. Could shatter both temperature and snowfall records.

“Winter weather making for record-breaking day in London, Ont,” reads the headline.

“A blast of winter weather in London, Ont., could shatter temperature records for the day and is already believed to have set a new snowfall record,” writes Jacquelyn LeBel.

“Environment Canada is forecasting a high of just 1 C on Wednesday, almost guaranteeing a new record low for the maximum temperature for April 21.

“The previous record for the lowest maximum temperature for the day in London is 5 C in 1945, recorded at the airport.

“Before 1941, data was recorded in nearby Lambeth, where the record low max for the day is 3.8 C recorded in 1936.

“It looks like we’re going to smash them both today because we’re barely at one degree,” says Global News Radio 980 CFPL weather specialist John Wilson.

The overnight low, meanwhile, is expected to fall to -5 C, approaching the current record low for April 21 of -5.9 C set in 1981 at the airport.

Meanwhile, Environment Canada issued a winter weather travel advisory for much of southwestern Ontario, including London and Middlesex County, ahead of the low pressure system that could bring up to 5 cm of snowfall.

The national weather agency said Londoners could face snow, slippery road conditions and reduced visibility due to falling snow starting Tuesday night and lasting into Wednesday morning.

Meteorologists say due to the “uncertain track of the weather system and the warm ground temperatures,” actual snowfall amounts could change.

John Parsons, the city’s division manager of roadside operations, told Global News that sander and salter trucks wee available and ready to deploy if need be, with a focus on main roads and bus routes.

Record-Cold Start to Summer for Saskatchewan, Canada June 2021
« Reply #6 on: June 24, 2021, 04:15:43 PM »
It’s been a historically cold start to summer for central and eastern Canada, with the Saskatchewan towns of Lucky Lake, Rosetown, and Leader among the locales logging record low temperatures this week.

The village of Lucky Lake saw the mercury plunge to 1C (33.8F) on Monday, June 21, which smashed its previous record for the date of 3.5C (38.3F) set last year, in 2020 (further signs of our cooling climate).

The Leader area observed a low of 2C (35.6F) on Monday, which was cold enough to comfortably usurp the old benchmark of 3.3C (37.9F) from 1951.

While Rosetown suffered the lowest temperature in all of the west central region. It dipped below freezing with a low of -0.8C (30.5F), which busted the town’s all time record of 1.1C set way back in 1917 (during the Centennial Minimum).

Not only was the Town of Rosetown the coldest in west central region of Saskatchewan, it was the coldest provincewide, beating-out Mankota at -0.6C (30.9F) and Val Marie at -0.5C (31.1F).

In addition, historic summer freezes have also swept the provinces of Manitoba, Ontario, and southern Quebec.

As the obfuscating mainstream media draws everyone’s attention to the anomalous heat in the West, the majority of the North American continent has actually been suffering record-breaking cold.

Canada: BC’s heat wave, Temps to reach 40C in Vancouver, 50C Inland
« Reply #8 on: June 27, 2021, 10:19:03 AM »
Source: https://www.weatherwatch.co.nz/content/canada-british-columbias-incredible-heat-wave-temps-to-reach-40c-in-vancouver-near-50c-inland

UPDATED 26/06/2021 9:57am — An unprecedented heat wave is about to impact Canada’s west with incredible temperatures forecast for the often temperate coastal region.

Vancouver City is expected to reach into the late 30s Celsius this week. Today’s high is 29 degrees, tomorrow it’s 34C and by Monday Vancouver airport – which is coastal – is expected to have a high of 39C.

A little further inland and western suburbs of Vancouver are likely to hit 41C. Vancouver’s previous highest record was 34C in 2009 and before that was just 29C in 2008.

But it’s inland areas of British Columbia, surrounded by mountains, where the real heat will be – and latest IBM forecasts show this region will be as hot as Australia’s desert can get, with expected daytime highs now likely to hit 50C, in the shade, in the coming days.

Kamloops (which has a climate similar to Queenstown at times) has a high of 37C Friday, 42C Saturday, 46C Sunday, 48C and a huge 50C by Tuesday.

Canada’s highest temperature ever recorded was 45C in July 1937 in the province of Saskatchewan. British Columbia’s highest ever temperature, according to Environment Canada, was 44.4C in July 1941.

A major storm system that moved over Ottawa Saturday morning flooded roads and parks as it dumped a record amount of rain.

As of 5 p.m., 50.6 mm of rain fell at the Ottawa International Airport, while another weather station recorded 48.3 mm of rain.

On Sunday morning, Environment Canada reported the official total at the airport to be 49.4 mm, eclipsing the previous record for rainfall on Oct. 16 of 26 mm, set back in 2002.

A Heavy Snowfall Declaration has been declared in the B.C. City of Prince George after a record-breaking 35cm (13.8 inches) accumulated in just 24 hours.

When PG receives snowfall of 20+cm (7.9+inches) in a 24-hour period a Heavy Snowfall Declaration is issued, explains myprincegeorgenow.com. An additional 24 hours is added for every 8cm (3 inches) of snow the city receives, meaning it won’t be until Saturday before clearing crews begin working residential areas.

Meteorologist Trevor Smith told MyPGNow.com the snow will now make way record-challenging cold.

“As we get into Christmas weekend, we are looking at low around minus thirty and minus thirty-four,” he said–with PG’s all-time December low being the -48.9C set on Dec 31, 1927.
