Italy Sets New World 24 Hour Snowfall Record.
« on: March 09, 2015, 06:50:03 PM »
Now it's official. The data, collected by fans in the area, it's scary: 256cm  of snow in Capracotta (1,421 meters, province of Isernia, Molise), 240 cm  to Pescocostanzo (1,395 meters, province of L'aquila): are the two new records of most abundant snowfall within 24 hours, i.e. one day, though in reality all this snow is falling in about 18 hourson Thursday, March 5, 2015. And higher, definitely accumulations are even more relevant. The previous world record of most abundant snowfall ever in 24 hours was to Silver Lake, Colorado, where between 20 and April 21, 1921 193cm fell of snow in 24 hours. But surely between Abruzzo and Molise many times it snowed harder. The great Weatherman Edmund Baig, the Italian Meteorological Magazine in December 1961 wrote that to Roccacaramanico, frazione of Sant'Eufemia a Maiella just 878 metres of altitude in the province of Pescara, 365cm fell of snow in 24 hours.

pescocostanzo 26Meanwhile, in two villages between Abruzzo and Molise Apennines men and means are still working to clear the roads between the houses, submerged by snow drifts that reached three metres due to wind, which blew wild during the storm. In MeteoWeb facebook page   we published a video made to Pescocostanzo during the storm: it was almost impossible to leave the House!

It should be noted as the Apennine area between Abruzzo and Molise is not new to this kind of snowfall, which over the years have occurred several times with similar accumulations of this event. It is, and is handed down in the annals and in the manuals of Meteorology for generations in generations, more snow zone in the world in terms of abundance of snowfall in a short time, due to the proximity with the sea, exposure to North/East and orographic characteristics of the area.

messina12He is just yet another record in a historic winter for southern Italy, with several episodes of frost and snow records from what happened between December 30 and January 1 December 31, 2014 2015 when Puglia was submerged by an exceptional snowfall, at the southern end has been blanched even the Strait of Messina, it snowed for two consecutive days in PalermoSyracuse was whitewashed, and even Southern beaches of Sicily. Then other episodes of snow in the Plains for the entire month of February, even in Naples where snow is falling twice on 31 December and the February 9.
Adesso è ufficiale: Capracotta e Pescocostanzo hanno battuto il record MONDIALE di neve. FOTO incredibili
