Latest Station Additions to our Live Map.
« on: June 10, 2015, 03:48:48 PM »
10th June 2015

We have recently added a few more Stations to our Live Map and Station Data Summary. The links for both these pages may be found on the top menu.

New Zealand Local Weather Network Map

To visit their web sites, click on the Marker beside the Station name.

Omokoroa, North of Tauranga
Rosedale,  Invercargill
Wanaka
Dunedin
Masterton
Iona, Havelock North
Gisborne West
Opoho, North of Dunedin
Conifer Grove, Auckland
Colson’s Hill, Tokoroa
Temuka, North of Timaru

It has taken a couple of years but we have fairly good coverage of New Zealand as you can see.
Now to just keep you all online  ::)

Cheers
Jenny

Is there any way of logging off-line stations and the period they are off line?
Perhaps if a station has been offline for say a calendar month without contacting the admin, they should be removed and have to re-apply to be re-instated. Perhaps a bit draconian, but it would maintain the integrity of the map and perhaps teach us good stewardship of the site  :D

The ideal would be that sites automatically are hidden when they go offline and re-appear when they re-establish contact. Take a bit of programming mind you.

Tony you are one of the fortunate ones. You station stays online and you do not have me nagging you....lol.  Ok some info.

The Data Summary is as you suggested. We have 106 stations listed on the summary. 102 are online at present and this is pretty much as good as it gets. Most auto and some manual that Wolfie and I add each night/day. Those off line are hidden but we can see them in the editors pages. This is what you are suggesting for the map.

beteljuice wrote the Data Summary script for us and us alone. No other network has the use of it. It is unique to us.

The Map script is written by Ken True. All the weather networks use this.
The history of this network, Map and script is here:

http://www.localweather.net.nz/smf/nz-local-weather-network-map-requests/affiliated-regional-weather-network's-history

I see I need to update the stations list. I will do so.

So the map script itself we do not own and we are unable to alter this. We manually alter the station's List as we need to.
The layout/graphics of the Map is however ours.

The Summary as you know is run at midnight each day. beteljuice wrote in a neat summary for me at the end of the script run. It tells me who is offline, how long they have been offline etc. Mostly those station reappear next morning and they are manually added to the Summary by Wolfie or myself plus appear back on the Map. If they are offline on the summary then they are offline on the map as both scripts read the realtime/clientraw txt files
When a station remains off line for a period of time I then make contact with the owner if they have not already made contact with us. This is where the nagging comes into it :)
Some owners do not even realise their station is offline and a reboot does the trick. Some have hardware hassles, some server hassles etc etc. For these ones we wait.
If they are not going to be returning then Alan hides them on the Map. The ongoing maintenance of the Map is a huge job and hence I do not annoy Alan unless I am sure the station is not going to be live again.

So that is how it works.
For me; I actually prefer the personal touch as opposed to just banishing them. This way if we can help then we do. Many of our station owners have been part of the NZ forums for many years. To me they are not just an off line station, they are a friend/ a weather college. I also like to know they are all ok themselves. I guess that is the female side of me kicking in.

Cheers
Jenny

I suspected this was the case which prevents any tidy solution to hiding offline stations.
My comments weren't meant as any implied criticism and I do realise that much work is involved keeping station owners in line. It was Beetlejuice's comment which triggered the thought process.

any implied criticism

and absolutely none was taken TonyC :)
I just decided to give a bit of info for those reading down this topic is all.
When this forum first began, much work was put into the map and graphics by the admin men.
Like the Data Summary it is on going maintenance for Alan. The Map and script is extremely clever and all the maps on the global network look cool.
As in life things are taken for granted hence I decided to elaborate a little :)

and of course beteljuice's comment was tongue in cheek as he knows whats involved.

TonyC did you follow this link for the Global stations.
I updated it last night. 2 had been removed and 2 added.
Did you also notice how many stations NZ has and how many Aussie has  ;D

I have now and it does make interesting reading. I notice on most of the maps that are available, that the "offline" syndrome isn't confined to NZ!  ;)
BTW- The Aussie link gives a "forbidden access" page.

Station come and stations go and looking at the message flashing at me at the top I have not updated this topic for 120 days  ::)

We have lost a few and gained a few.
Those added were:
Ruakura, Hamiltion
Sandy Beach, Port Charles
Westport
Marahau, Tasman
Fendalton, Christchurch
Otane
Kuratau, Lake Taupo
and of yesterday Otaki.

Wolfie is currently maintaining the Live Map for us. Thanks Wolfie, we all know what a time consuming and thankless chore this is.
