Just a note on daily EQ reports
« on: July 04, 2012, 06:43:35 PM »
There are a number of quakes reported by Geonet (mostly on the beta site) which occur some distance out to sea which I do not include in the daily report. The exception are those which are felt on land such as last night's Taranaki one.
Unless there is any particularly strong desire for these to be included, I will continue to ignore them.

My opinion is ignore the beta site. beta is beta.
Its is also headed "that may have been felt "
so yes stick to the ones you know for sure.

Chris Crowes Canterbury site  sources Geonet data which often isn't published on their main pages. It is interesting to note what is and isn't published on the main Geonet site since they introduced the beta page.

Chris Crowe site is really good and have used this since Sept 4th.  If you have a query regarding a quake that is not published by Geonet he will list it.
Geonet have had a history of not publishing all the quakes since Sept 4th and reported on one of their pages the they were only going to publish ones that were over 3.5 mag and they didn't.  We were getting so many at that stage - 341 on the 6th of Sept for eg.
They are of course now reporting a lot more but not necessarily all of them,
If one is felt and not reported I check the beta site to find the info that I required. With the larger ones if you use the drum on Canterbury Quake Live and it shows us and you press on the drum where it shows you will find that he lists where it is wherever it is.
The one felt here today of 4.8 mag felt a lot higher than that and was more like a 5 or so and on the beta site it shows where some of the readings were recorded was a 5.0.This i the drum below of the Geonet recording of it.
