https://www.sott.net/article/434760-10000-residents-flee-Michigan-county-after-TWO-dams-fail-in-a-single-day-unleashing-massive-flood

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has declared a state of emergency for one county after two dams breached on the same day, warning that downtown Midland could be under nine feet of water in just 12 hours as thousands evacuate.

Both the Edenville and Sanford dams near Midland breached on Tuesday after several days of heavy rainfall, sending a torrent of water downstream along the Tittabawassee River and prompting the governor to issue an evacuation order for the area's 10,000 or so residents.

"If you have not evacuated the area, do so now and get somewhere safe," Whitmer said in a statement, noting the state's National Guard had been activated and warning the city of Midland could be devastated by flooding as soon as Wednesday.

Now moving north over the warm waters of the open Gulf of Mexico, Tropical Storm Cristobal is expected to gather strength as it heads toward an expected landfall in or near Louisiana late Sunday. Even before it moved off the Yucatan Peninsula, Cristobal was upgraded from a tropical depression to a tropical storm early Friday afternoon. Cristobal is a large, impressively organized tropical storm that will bring widespread impacts to the U.S. Gulf Coast.

Glacier National Park blames the late opening on “guidance from the CDC.” (See note at bottom of page.) What a laugh!

_____________

In Glacier National Park in Montana, the Going-to-the-Sun Road is still not open due to on-going snow removal efforts slowed because of such a heavy snowfall this past winter. And with the recent cold weather and terrible conditions still on-going, this year is likely to break the current record for latest opening, which is 2011 ( July 13th).

Clearing of Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park, MT. Credit: NPS
Since records began, Going to the Sun road has experienced only five openings in July: July 1, 2007, July 2, 2008, July 10, 1943, July 13, 2011, and July 15, 1933.

Notice that three of the five late openings have taken place in the last 13 years. This will make the fourth.

More and more snow later and later in the year. This is how ice ages begin!

Here’s a press kit from Glacier National Park showing open and close dates:

Why such a late opening?
Road-clearing crews encountered 80-foot (20.4-meter) snowdrifts:

RECORD-SETTING SUMMER-CHILL ENGULFS THE U.S.
« Reply #23 on: August 10, 2020, 06:17:50 PM »
Temperature departures as much as 12C below the seasonal average will continue to grip central and eastern regions as the weekend approaches:

GFS 2m Temp Anomalies to Fri, Aug 7 [tropicaltidbits.com].

The National Weather Service says both daily and monthly low temperature records are under-threat, particularly in Southern and Midwestern regions.

https://electroverse.net/record-setting-summer-chill-engulfs-the-united-states/

August is usually a hot box of sweat and humidity in this part of the world, but this unseasonable-chill comes during what has [so far] been a historically cold start to the month across the Show-Me State.

Kansas City is also threatening all-time August lows.

Heatwave conditions hamper US fire crews
Wildfires erupt as hotter, tinder-dry weather sets in across southern California.

Crews scrambled to protect homes from a huge wildfire that prompted evacuations to the north of Los Angeles, and officials warned the blaze could flare up again as a blistering heatwave descended on California.

The fire exploded in size within hours after it broke out in dense forest on Wednesday, sending up a towering plume of smoke visible for hundreds of kilometres around.

Flames raced across ridges and steep slopes, including in some areas that had not burned since 1968, fire officials said. By Thursday night, the blaze still threatened more than 5,400 homes and had charged through 44.5 square kilometres (17 square miles) of brush and forest land.

The fire was fed by tinder-dry brush in steep terrain, but its ferocity approached that of wind-driven blazes that usually erupt when gusty Santa Ana winds arrive later in the year, said county Deputy Fire Chief David Richardson.

The blaze was only 6 percent contained. Light winds and scattered thundershowers early in the day did help firefighters tame the flames somewhat. However the short term forecast is for hot, dry weather with "near critical" fire conditions because of possible gusty winds.

"This will be a major fire for several days," said Chief Robert Garcia with the US Forest Service.

Officials are preparing for the possibility of more extremely dangerous fires as the heat increases and humidity levels drop, fire officials said in a statement.

The area was expected to have temperatures of about 35 degrees Celsius (mid-90s Fahrenheit) or higher through the weekend.

Evacuation centres were designated for residents and animals, but because of COVID-19 concerns people have been told to stay in their cars in the parking lots.

About 100 rural homes were evacuated in the Lake Hughes area of the Angeles National Forest, some 97km (60 miles) north of downtown Los Angeles.

Preliminary damage assessments found at least three structures were burned, but authorities warned the toll is likely to be higher.

Kenny Reynolds lost his home. The fire came down the hill and across the street "engulfing on both sides", he told KABC-TV.

Reynolds and others retreated "and then it just kind of rolled in", he said. "It was taking everything as it kind of went down."

The cause of the blaze, dubbed the Lake Fire, is under investigation. It is one of several wildfires burning in the region.

Denver – Earliest =freeze on record
« Reply #26 on: September 11, 2020, 07:05:45 PM »
Ties one other date for the earliest freeze on record going back nearly 150 years.

Denver’s temperature plunged from 93 degrees on Monday to 32 degrees on Tuesday. It’s a tie with September 8, 1962, for the earliest freeze on record going back nearly 150 years.

The National Weather Service has recorded six other days since 1872 where the temperature dropped by 60 degrees or more in Denver, but they were all during the winter.

Also the earliest measurable September snowfall ever. To add to the misery, this all came after 100-degree temperatures on Saturday in Rapid City.

__________

This was the earliest measurable snow in downtown Rapid City in September since 2014,  according to meteorologist Matt Gonterak. The city’s previous record of 1.6″ was set on Sept. 11, 2014 .

Tuesday’s weather set a record for a daily low in downtown Rapid City at 31 degrees. The previous record was in 1929 when downtown’s low was 34 degrees.

In fact, multiple records were set in Downtown Rapid City and at the Rapid City Regional Airport on Monday September 7th, 2020:

Downtown Rapid City

Record Daily Low: 31°F (The previous record of 34°F was set in 1929)

Record Daily Precipitation: 0.97″ (Previous record of 0.55″ set in 1951)

Record Daily Snowfall: 1.0″ (No previous snow record for September 7th, 2020)

Earliest freezing temperature: September 7th, 2020 (Previous earliest freezing temperature : September 11th, 1921 and on September 11th, 2014)

September 7th, 2020 set a record for the earliest measurable snow in Downtown Rapid City (Previous record September 11th, 2014 of 1.6″)

Rapid City Regional Airport

Record Daily Low: 32°F (Previous record 34°F in 1986)

Record Daily Precipitation: 0.96″ (Previous 0.86″ in 1946)

Earliest freezing temperature: September 7th, 2020 (Previous: September 9th, 1962/September 9th, 2001)

Other records that could be broken by the impending snowfall:

Snowiest September. (In 1927, Rapid City saw four and eight tenth inches.)
The northern part of the Black Hills saw the highest amounts. The National Weather Service reports Lead saw ten inches, while Deadwood saw six inches. Keystone, near Mount Rushmore in the central Black Hills saw four inches. Rapid City received a little over an inch.

Massive clouds of mosquitoes kill cows, horses in Louisiana

Killing large animals by the hundreds.

Swarms of mosquitoes have killed cows, deer, horses and other livestock in Louisiana after rain from Hurricane Laura led to an explosion in the pests’ population.

Thousands of mosquitoes have attacked animals as large as bulls.

“As soon as you would walk outside, your legs would turn black from the sheer amount of mosquitoes,” said Jeremy Hebert, a LSU AgCenter agent in Acadia Parish.

That was two days ago. Then they smashed another record yesterday.

Two days ago, on Sept 9, Kansas City set a new record coldest high temp of just 54 degrees, smashing the old record of 66 degrees set in 1907.

Yesterday KC had another record cold high temp of 56 degrees. Normal high is 82.

Earliest snow EVER in Monmouth County, NJ
« Reply #32 on: October 04, 2020, 05:09:08 PM »
At least not not in the last 127 years. (When recordkeeping began at this location.)

2 Oct 2020 – According to NOAA and the Center For Weather & Climate, the Freehold weather station has not recorded accumulating snow in the first two weeks of October in the past 127 years, since 1893.

The earliest accumulating snow recorded in Monmouth County happened on October 20, 1940, when the Freehold area got an inch of snow.

“It’s hard to be optimistic about this upcoming winter,” writes Lou Russo. “Let’s all remember that it’s 2020, and that means anything can happen!

Calls grow for state and national prescribed burns strategies to prevent repeat of huge wildfires in Western states.

San Francisco, United States – It is the fuel – the dry grass, the crispy leaves, the parched shrubbery and the dead trees caused by climate change’s shortened rainy season – that is making the 2020 fire season one of the worst in US history.

Some 3.4 million hectares (8.3 million acres) were burned in Washington state, Oregon, California, Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, and Wyoming by mid-October. In 2019, about half as much territory was burned in the western United States.

Minneapolis – Snowiest October on record
« Reply #37 on: October 25, 2020, 06:56:52 PM »
Not just for the day, but the entire month. And the month isn’t over yet.

“Minneapolis has officially recorded their snowiest October on record. 8.9 inches has fallen so far,” says reader Kenneth Lund. “This breaks the old record of 8.2 inches set 29 years ago.

“Out of the top 7 snowiest, 5 occurred prior to 1960,” says Kenneth.

“This is a big deal! Records go back to 1872.”
