Weather in the USA 2020.
« on: January 10, 2020, 07:29:22 PM »
Multiple major snowstorms have buried parts of Newfoundland, Canada over the past few weeks — more than 1 meter (3.3 feet) of powder has accumulated over the Avalon Peninsula.

U.S. ON COURSE TO BE HIT NEXT
Latest GFS runs reveal wave after wave of brutal Polar cold is about to be unlocked from the Arctic and funneled anomalously-far south by an ever-weakening jet stream–the result of the historically low solar activity we’re currently experiencing.

Record-smashing sub-zero temperatures –some 22C below normal across vast regions– will have descended into ALL of the United States by Jan 17, with the Western and Central regions looking to be hit first beginning around Jan 10.

January is in full swing in the eastern half of the United States where temperatures and wind chills are below zero in the Northern Plains and New England.

The arctic air spills all the way into the Mid-South where the wind chill is in the teens in Atlanta and Memphis this morning.

By tonight into Tuesday morning, the coldest air moves into central Florida where wind chill alerts have been issued and there are wind chills in the 30's in Orlando.

After this cold blast in the East our attention turns to a new cross-country storm to move from West to East this week with snow, ice and rain.

https://www.sott.net/article/428264-Cloudiest-January-day-on-record-for-Minnesota-major-flooding-of-Mississippi-river-expected

he last time there was a stretch of seven straight days of completely cloudy conditions was in October 2018. There's been longer stretches in the past. The longest record of consecutive days with zero minutes of sunshine is fifteen days from October 30, 1972 to November 13, 1972. The 1972 streak is remarkable that on November 14 there was less than an hour of sunshine, then two more days of zero minutes of sunshine! The sunshine recorder was at the Twin Cities International Airport before June 1996 and moved to Chanhassen after that. The sunshine recorder has since been discontinued.

Next 2-5 Days a Far Cry From Last Year

At the risk of being trite and cliche (I'm not above that) what a difference a year makes! One year ago today Minne?refresh=truesota was getting punched by the dreaded "Polar Vortex". Exactly a year ago MSP woke up to -25F, with a "high" of -1F. January 30, 2019 was the coldest day, with a seizure-inducing -28F low and a Fairbanks-friendly daytime high of -13F. Wind chills fell to 50 below as the state endured some of the
coldest readings since the 1990s.

Record snowfall on the Great Plains
« Reply #3 on: February 07, 2020, 08:09:45 PM »
In both Texas and Oklahoma

Daily snowfall records had already been broken yesterday (Wednesday) morning in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Wichita Falls, Texas. They measured 3.2 and 2.4 inches, respectively, with more expected in the evening hours.

The old Feb. 5 records were 2.3 inches for Oklahoma City in 2002, and 1.7 inches for Wichita Falls in 1964. Average snowfall for the date is one-tenth of an inch. Another batch of snowfall could return to these areas this evening.

Several more inches of snowfall — along with with some sleet and freezing rain — was forecast for eastern Kansas, Missouri and Illinois for the rest of Wednesday, with the storm likely making a direct hit in St. Louis as well as Springfield, Illinois.

Wednesday night and Thursday, the storm will move into the eastern Great Lakes — mainly along and north of Interstate 70, including Indianapolis, Columbus and possibly Detroit — as well as the Northeast.

US: Blizzards bring widespread disruption to Rocky Mountain area
« Reply #4 on: February 07, 2020, 08:25:28 PM »

A major storm that dumped snow throughout the Rocky Mountains region in the United States has prompted a rare decision to close public schools in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The blizzards caused extensive flight delays and traffic accidents, shutting down stretches of highways in Utah and Wyoming on Monday.

There were snow accumulations of 46 centimetres (18 inches) in some parts of the greater Salt Lake City area, with more forecast to fall through the night.

The resort has labelled this year’s phenomenon “FebruBURIED”:

“This morning we reported 10 inches [25.4cm] of snow overnight, which pushed us over the edge to the snowiest February we have on record! Our 87 inches [221cm] so far topped the recent record of 85 inches [216cm] from the 2013-14 season, 82 inches [208cm] from the 1992-93 season, and average February snowfall of 50 inches [127cm]. With the snow still falling and two weeks left in the month, you could say we are FebruBURIED,” wrote Nicole Stull, spokeswoman for Breckenridge, in an email.

Many other Summit County regions are also reporting monster February snowfall totals, according to ski area reports and Open Snow data, and as originally published by skyhinews.com:

“We’ve had 60 inches [152.4cm] of snow so far in February,” said Arapahoe Basin Ski Area spokeswoman Leigh Hierholzer. “Definitely one of our snowiest Februarys on record so far for the month.”

Powerful Great Lakes and Northeastern U.S. Winter Storm
« Reply #9 on: February 29, 2020, 06:59:52 PM »
More than 25 million people subject to some level of a winter weather alert, including possible blizzard conditions and bitter cold. Expect travel disruptions, power outages and school closings in some areas.
A winter storm will rapidly strengthen Thursday while shifting from the Ohio Valley into southern Quebec, according to the National Weather Service. Heavy snow and strengthening winds will shift from the Midwest into northern New England, , from Missouri to Maine, followed by very heavy lake effect snow downwind from the Lower Great Lakes, with possible blizzard conditions over parts of Western New York state downwind from Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. Cities such as Chicago and Detroit are in the path of the storm.

A major lake-effect snow event is forecast downwind from the Lower Great Lakes on Thursday with accumulations of more than one foot (30 cm) possible.

Snow has already been reported in portions of South Dakota, Nebraska, eastern Colorado and Kansas, where Interstate 70 was closed for several hours.

“The corridor where 6-12 inches (15 t0 30 cm) of snow can fall has shifted south of Chicago but may be centered on Detroit; Champaign, Illinois; Fort Wayne, Indiana; and Toledo, Ohio,” said AccuWeather senior meteorologist Dan Pydynowski.

Temperatures will be 10 to 15 degrees below average over the Upper Midwest, Ohio Valley into the Tennessee Valley and the Gulf Coast on Thursday night into Friday.

Arkansas tornado doubles in size in seconds, tears through city
« Reply #12 on: March 30, 2020, 07:25:01 PM »
https://www.sott.net/article/431533-Arkansas-tornado-doubles-in-size-in-seconds-tears-through-city

A tornado ripped through Jonesboro, Arkansas on Saturday afternoon, triggering a citywide curfew after powerful winds overturned cars and demolished buildings, according to local NBC affiliate KAIT.

The National Guard is being deployed to help secure the area, the outlet reported. In addition to ravaging several homes and businesses, the storm caused a gas leak in east Jonesboro and partially destroyed a local mall. Many businesses were already closed or empty in response to the covid-19 outbreak, though no statewide stay-at-home order has been issued.

Local authorities are currently conducting search and rescue efforts, the city's E-911 Director Jeff Presley told KAIT, and Jonesboro Mayor Harold Perrin issued a citywide curfew beginning at 7 p.m. ET.

Winter will not give up, warns the Weather Service. Record cold temperatures are possible from the Upper Mississippi Valley into portions of the Plains…the mid section of the nation.

Temperatures will be 10 to 30 degrees below average across much of the central and eastern United States.

Meanwhile, heavy snow is likely over parts of the Northern/Central Rockies…

Heavy snow to blanket the region

As this system exits into the eastern Atlantic tonight showers and wet snowflakes will overspread the central/southern Appalachians, as well as the Mid-Atlantic states. Across the northern and central Rockies, winter will not give up as cold temperatures and heavy snow blanket the region.

A cold front is forecast to enter from Canada tonight and swing through the western U.S. Wednesday and Thursday. 1 to 2 feet of snow is possible across the higher elevations of Montana, Wyoming and Colorado.

Upwards of 6 inches of snow (15 cm) is forecast across the High Plains of Wyoming and northern Colorado. Snow showers are also possible across the Central Plains and Lower Great Lakes along the front.

Will feel more like March instead of mid-April

Temperatures across much of the central and eastern U.S. will feel more like March instead of mid-April. Thus, widespread Freeze Warnings and Frost Advisories stretch from the Southern Plains to the Ohio Valley. The core of the cold air will be found across the Midwest and Northern Plains through Thursday. High temperatures will struggle to get out of the 30s and 40s in this region, with lows in the teens and 20s.

Temperature records could fall

A few daily temperature records could fall here. Meanwhile, the West Coast and southern Florida will enjoy above average temperatures. Forecast lows in the 70s across southern Florida would break a plethora of daily high minimum temperature records.

Record cold in Alaska’s northernmost town
« Reply #16 on: April 30, 2020, 06:59:34 PM »
While most of the state is blossoming into spring, areas north of the Brooks Range have still been dealing with cold and blizzard conditions. Early Wednesday morning Utqiagvik saw the thermometer fall to minus 20F, beating the previous record of -19F set back in 1973. It is the first time in recorded history that Utqiagvik saw a low of minus 20 this late in the season.

Utqiagvik, northernmost town in the United States, is the largest city in Alaska’s North Slope Borough and is located north of the Arctic Circle.

Probably not very much ice will be melting at 20 degrees below zero.

Severe thunderstorms swept through the Plains and parts of the South bringing hailstones the size of baseballs and damaging winds up to 72mph from the Dakotas to Tennessee as forecasters warn the Northeast to brace for some mid-May snow.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the storm system brought large hail to portions of the Black Hills, western South Dakota plains and northeastern Wyoming on Sunday.

'The largest hail reported occurred in Jackson County between Potato Creek and Wanblee, where tennis ball- to baseball-sized hail was reported,' the NWS said.

Chicago breaks May rainfall record for third year in a row?
« Reply #19 on: May 21, 2020, 05:51:20 PM »
With nearly two weeks remaining in the month, Chicago is poised to smash the record for wettest May of all-time.

Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport has already reported 8.19 inches of rain this month, making this the third-wettest May since record keeping began in the 1950s.

According to NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Paul Deanno, the record was set in 2019, with 8.25 inches of rain during the month.

May 2018 was another record-setting month, with 8.21 inches of rain, meaning that if Chicago gets 0.07 more inches of rain this month, it will mark the third consecutive year that the monthly rain record has been broken.

Chicago has received 7.88 inches of rain over the last four days alone.
