Ready or not, the snowy cold has arrived USA.

Ready or not, the snowy cold has arrived. Over the last week, snow blanketed parts of the western United States. And last night, storms dumped on Colorado.

As early snowstorms go, the latest round in the west is hefty. More than 12 inches fell in Breckenridge, Colo., last night. Check out the porch above, and town shot below!

https://weather.com/storms/winter/news/rockies-snow-montana-colorado-wyoming-early-october-2017

A heavy early-season snowstorm dumped more than a foot of snow on parts of the Rockies.

Travel impacts occurred, along with tree damage and power outages.

The first blizzard of the season resulted in widespread power outages and downed trees in parts of Montana. Treacherous travel conditions and additional power outages were also observed across other portions of the northern and central Rockies as an early-season snowstorm swept through the region.

October snowstorm breaks record in Minnesota
« Reply #30 on: October 29, 2017, 05:43:10 PM »
GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) -- Some Wisconsinites to our North and Northwest had to break out the shovels and snowplows on Friday after the first snow storm of the season hit parts of Wisconsin and Minnesota.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, Minnesota, Duluth received 10.6 inches of snow on Friday; the highest single day snowfall accumulation for October.

Some folks report seeing as much as 8-10" of snow in parts of Douglas County.

Total snowfall amounts from the event in the Gogebic range could end up being between 8-14" by the time the snow ends later on Saturday.

The National Weather Service in Green Bay shows some of the heaviest snow showers stayed just north/west of Vilas County.

Presque Isle came in with 6" of snow, Lac Vieux Desert had 3" and Boulder Junction had 2.8" of snow.

Below are some pictures taken in Montreal, Wisconsin; about 3.5 miles west of Hurley, Wisconsin.

Cold temps shatter 107-year-old record in Houston.

https://www.click2houston.com/weather/cold-temps-shatter-107-year-old-record-in-houston

HOUSTON - It was 1910 the last time it was this cold at Bush Intercontinental Airport, and 1952 since it was this cold at Hobby Airport.

It was 36 degrees on Sunday morning at IAH, which shattered the previous record low temperature of 39 degrees. At HOU, it was 39 degrees which broke the previous record low of 42 degrees.

The good news is that the wind is not a factor. So, what you see in temperature is what you actually feel.

Expect a warmup to about 70 degrees by Sunday afternoon. That is about 9 degrees warmer than Saturday, but still about 8 degrees colder than the norm.

Second consecutive day of record-breaking cold

11 Nov 17 – The temperature dropped to 23F on Saturday morning, according to the National Weather Service, breaking the old record low for the date of 24F set in 1901.

It also marked the second consecutive day of record-breaking cold for the Boston area.

On Friday, the city broke its previous 2004 record low temperature of 25F.

Boston isn’t the only part of the country experiencing cold, according to the weather service.

Meteorologist David Epstein said that Arctic air moved into the region on Friday, ushering in the coldest temperatures of the season so far.

Forecasters said the region could still see record cold on Sunday morning as well.

Alaska. snowfall rates on record: 10 inches per hour

https://www.adn.com/alaska-news/weather/2017/12/08/alaska-just-reported-one-of-the-most-extreme-snowfall-rates-on-record-10-inches-per-hour/

Well that's kind of what happened Wednesday at Alaska's Thompson Pass, outside of the town of Valdez, when an incredible 10 inches of snow piled up in one hour – around 1.7 inches every 10 minutes. This is an absolutely incredible snowfall rate.

The furious storm dropped another 5 inches in 30 minutes, for a remarkable 15 inches in a brief hour and a half period. In the end, 40 inches of heavy wet snow accumulated in 12 hours.

« Reply #36 on: December 12, 2017, 07:40:37 AM »
This snowstorm certainly surpassed expectations.

Areas across Alabama were blanketed with snow on Friday, with totals reaching the double digits in some areas.

As of Friday night some of the highest totals came from Randolph and Calhoun counties in east Alabama.

Erie, Pa. sees record 53 inches of snow in 30 hours (photos)
by Geoff Herbert | gherbert@syracuse.com

Dreaming of a White Christmas turned into a nightmare for some as holiday travel in Pennsylvania has been snarled by a record-breaking winter storm in Erie, Pa.

The National Weather Service says nearly three feet -- 34 inches -- of snow fell on Erie on Christmas Day Monday, the highest single-day total ever recorded. The city's previous record was 20 inches on Nov. 22 in 1956.

Snow continued to fall Tuesday morning, with another 19 inches between midnight and 6 a.m. That brought the snowstorm total to 53 inches in just 30 hours for the snowiest 2-day total ever recorded in the entire state of Pennsylvania.

According to the NWS, Erie's previous biggest snowstorms were 30.2 inches over three days in 2002 and 39.8 inches over seven days the previous winter.

GoErie.com reports the city of Erie declared a snow emergency Tuesday morning and the storm's not even over yet. A lake effect snow warning is in effect until 4 p.m. Wednesday, with up to 16 more inches of snow possible at a rate of up to 3 inches per hour.

According to CBS, Pennsylvania State Police is recommending all drivers stay off the roads in Erie County on Tuesday. The PennDOT has also issued a speed restriction for Interstate 79, between Meadville (Exit 147A) and Interstate 90.

Snow in Texas Is ‘Pretty Cool’ for Children Seeing It for the First Time
« Reply #38 on: December 29, 2017, 08:39:15 AM »
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/12/08/us/snow-south.html?action=click&contentCollection=U.S.&module=RelatedCoverage&region=Marginalia&pgtype=article

In his 10 years, Vincent Rivera of Corpus Christi, Tex., knew snow only as something experienced by others.

“My mom has been to places like Chicago and Washington, D.C., when it’s snowing, and she would tell me about it and I wish I could be there to see it,” he said in a phone interview on Friday night.

When snow was forecast for parts of Texas late Thursday night, he stayed up until midnight. His wait was in vain. But five hours later, he awoke to two inches at his home and as much as five inches in other parts of his neighborhood.

The snowfall, which Vincent described as a “pretty cool experience,” was the first recorded in Corpus Christi since 2004.

USA - Sharks Dying, Turtles Cold Stunned amid a record-breaking cold snap.
« Reply #39 on: December 31, 2017, 01:52:41 AM »
Sharks are washing up on a beach in Massachusetts frozen completely solid amid a record-breaking cold snap in the United States.

The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy said it had found three dead thresher sharks stranded on the shore of the Cape Cod Bay in Brewster, south of Boston, in the last three days.

The first two were "likely stranded due to cold shock" it said. The third was frozen solid.

Thresher sharks are found all over the world and generally stay far away from the shore, in warmer waters.

"These sharks were most likely moving to the south with the warmer water and got caught in the hook of Cape Cod," the group said.

The minimum temperature for the Cape Cod region in December is usually about 1 degrees Celsius, but current forecasts have it reaching as low as -12C.

The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy said all three sharks would be examined once they thawed.

Meanwhile, sea turtles are also feeling the cold.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said it rescued more than a dozen sea turtles off the coast of Galveston Island that were "cold-stunned by freezing air temperatures".

The lethargic sea turtles were found by fisherman and taken to NOAA's Sea Turtle Hospital to recover.

"All 18 turtles were brought in for rehabilitation, where their body temperature was slowly increased prior to placement into water," the group said.
