Britain expecting snow and sub-zero temperatures | Daily Mail Online

Britain's dry and calm weekend of weather this weekend is expected to be brought to an abrupt halt as sub-zero temperatures and snow are forecast across large parts of the country.

Heading into Monday and Tuesday, the Met Office has issued an alert for snow and ice for all of Scotland and most of Northern Ireland as the calm weather of the weekend takes a turn for the worse.

Up to four inches could fall over those two days, with forecasters warning of blizzards and frequent lightning strikes, which could cause power cuts and mass travel disruption.

Temperatures around the country are expected to plummet following this week's relatively mild weather, with some parts of the country expected to be gripped by lows of -6C next week.

Patchy mist and cloudy conditions are expected for many tomorrow, although there will be sunny spells in south-west England throughout the day.

Record snowfall in Scotland
« Reply #13 on: March 05, 2018, 07:58:13 AM »
Many roads completely impassible. Ten-foot (3m) snow drifts reported.

In Lanarkshire and north Glasgow, roads have been completely shut after record snowfall.

The Balmore Road at Lambhill Bridge to Boclair Road in Glasgow ‘s north is closed due an eight feet high snow drift.

Police Scotland reported that they have been unable to get their own patrol cars along the road.

People in the south-east of England and London have been warned to use as little water as possible due to burst pipes caused by the extreme weather of recent days.

Thames Water, South East Water, Southern Water and Affinity Water issued a joint statement this evening urging 13million people who still have access to water to use it sparingly.

Citing 'significant' numbers of people being left without water, the companies have advised people take short showers not baths and only use dishwashers containing full loads. There has been an increase in leaks across networks as the Beast from the East and Storm Emma recede.

The joint statement said: 'We are putting as much extra water as we

Coldest March 1st since 1878 UK
« Reply #15 on: March 10, 2018, 10:11:47 AM »
Britain: Coldest March high temperature on record of 23.5 F (minus 4.7 C) in Tredegar, Wales.
Glasgow: Coldest March day with a high of 32 F (O C).
Lerwick on Shetland: Coldest March day since 1937 with a high of 28 F (minus 2.3 C).
According to Weather blogger wrxmetman, for Central England “the first of March provisionally has the lowest mean temperature for that day since 1785. “Additionally,” wrote wrxmetman, “”it was the coldest day (lowest maximum of -0.8°C) for any March day since 1878.”

Below are a few of the higher snow totals provided by the Irish meteorological service, Met Eireann:

“As brutal as it was in Britain and Ireland,” the Post article continues, “it was even colder last week in Central and Eastern Europe, with temperatures averaging 18 degrees below normal. Temperatures in Warsaw remained below freezing for 11 days.”

Is Britain facing a WHITE Easter?
« Reply #17 on: March 20, 2018, 06:59:18 AM »
And more of the white stuff could be on the way for Easter, with the Met Office warning of 'wetter weather more probable in the south and with drier, colder conditions in the north albeit with a risk of snow at times'.
