https://www.sott.net/article/433207-Heavy-spring-blizzard-hits-northern-China-biggest-in-decades-say-residents

Spring has brought a blizzard to the door of many in northern China, trapping them inside.

The snowstorm over the last couple of days has covered large swathes of Jilin, Heilongjiang, and Inner Mongolia with localities raising red alerts for snowfall.

Some residents of Qiqihar in Heilongjiang province say that they haven't seen so much snow in 20 or 30 years.

Flooding in south and central China has killed more than a dozen people and forced hundreds of thousands from their homes, the government in Beijing said on Thursday.

About 228,000 people have been forced to seek emergency shelter due to flooding since June 2, the country’s Ministry of Emergency Management said.

China – Worst flooding in at least 71 years
« Reply #2 on: August 21, 2020, 07:08:24 AM »
Some claim it is the worst on record. See video.

Authorities predict that the flood will peak on Monday afternoon.

It is estimated that the water level of Chengdu’s Jintang County, which is located on the upper reaches of the Tuo River, will exceed the “safe level” by 3.85 meters and maximum peak discharge will climb to 8,200 cubic meters per second. This will set a new record at least since the founding of communist China 71 years ago.

Judging from the historical records of the Jintang Sanhuangmiao Hydrological Station since 1949, the highest flow rate recorded was 8,100 cubic meters per second in 1981. If it reaches 8,200 cubic meters per second this time, it means that the flood peak will set an all-time record, reported news.sina.com.

Beijing – Coldest December day in 42 years
« Reply #3 on: January 03, 2021, 09:19:17 PM »
Residents astonished at the sudden temperature drop.

__________

30 Dec 2020 – Apart from the resurgence of the coronavirus that has confined many Beijingers at home, local residents now have another reason to stay indoors – the bitter wind and extreme cold as the city saw its coldest recorded December day in 42 years at -26 C (-14.8F).

Residents were astonished at the sudden temperature drop.

“The forecast for Beijing is even colder than the North Pole,” a netizen on China’s Twitter-like Sina Weibo said early on Wednesday, posting screenshots of weather-tracking apps which read -13 C in Beijing and -3 C at the North Pole.

As a cold air mass swept across northern China and Beijing since Tuesday, temperatures plunged from an average daily high of 2 C to maximum highs of -6 C and lows of -13 C, some of the coldest December days in a decade.

Sea Ice Affects Ships In North China Ports
« Reply #4 on: January 21, 2021, 05:59:39 PM »
emperatures across China have plunged to their lowest in decades, boosting demand for power and fuel to historic highs in the world’s largest energy consumer.

12 Jan 21 – “The sea ice situation is more severe this year than the same period in previous years,” said Wang Jun, a professor specialising in transport issues at Dalian Maritime University.

Expansion of sea ice makes it tougher for ships to berth and discharge at key energy product import terminals along the coast of northern Bohai Bay.

“It could impede sailing and docking for vessels, no matter how big they are.”

Sea ice stretches 45 to 55 nautical miles at Liaodong Bay and 10 to 20 nautical miles at Bohai Bay, close to levels that could prompt temporary bans on shipping.

Last weekend, the marine safety bureau in northern Hebei sent several tugboats to the aid of vessels, , trapped in sea ice that was one metre (three foot) thick, to help bring them to Caofeidian and Huanghua ports, state television said. The vessels included LNG tanker Clean Planet and coal bulk tanker Agia Eirini Force

China's vegetable prices hit record highs due to historically cold winter
« Reply #5 on: January 29, 2021, 05:31:02 PM »
Asia's energy prices aren't the only commodity to have reached record highs this winter, the chill of solar minimum has also driven China's fresh vegetable prices to unprecedented levels.

A lingering "dip" in the jet stream has seen Arctic air funnel into southern Asian since early-December, 2020. The resulting cold has hampered the efforts of farmers ACROSS the continent, including in China, where on Monday the nation's wholesale price index for agricultural products -developed by China's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs- surged to a new all-time high of 139.

In addition, the sub-index dedicated solely to vegetables climbed even higher, to 145, also a new record. Among the 28 types of vegetables monitored by the index, the average price surged to 6.2 yuan (96 US cents) per kg on Monday, the highest since the data became available 10 years ago. The price of cauliflowers and cabbages almost doubled compared to a year earlier.

"In the beginning of 2021, we had three cold waves. This type of cold and frosty weather has a big impact on the production and growth of vegetables, their maturity periods and yields," said a spokesman for Baishazhou Agricultural and Non-staple Products Marketplace, a major wholesale market in Hubei province.

"Some vegetables have frozen to death," the spokesman continued, "even the vegetables growing in greenhouses may freeze badly, such as red cabbages and lettuces. The quality of a number of water spinach has dropped with declining supply.

Early-season heat records obliterated in China
« Reply #6 on: February 22, 2021, 07:20:59 PM »
https://www.weatherzone.com.au/news/early-season-heat-records-obliterated-in-china/533537

Prior to this year, Beijing's highest February temperature on record was 19.8ºC. On Saturday, the city broke this with a top temperature of 20.8ºC.

However this new record only lasted one day, with the city soaring to 25.6ºC on Sunday.

The weekend's heat was mind-blowing for this time of year.

Beijing's average maximum temperature during February (a winter month) is only 4ºC, based on the 30-year period from 1961-1990. This makes Sunday's top of 25.6ºC a staggering 21.6ºC above average for this time of year.

21 runners dead as extreme weather hits China ultramarathon
« Reply #9 on: May 24, 2021, 07:16:26 PM »
Twenty-one people were killed after hail, freezing rain and high winds hit runners taking part in a 100-kilometre cross-country mountain race in China, state media said Sunday.

One runner who had been missing was found at 9:30 am, but "had already lost their vital signs", state broadcaster CCTV reported, citing the local rescue command headquarters.

"This suggests that this incident caused 21 deaths in total," CCTV said. City officials had earlier confirmed 20 deaths and one person missing at a briefing earlier on Sunday.

Extreme weather hit a high-altitude section of the race held in the Yellow River Stone Forest near Baiyin city in northwestern Gansu province Saturday afternoon, city officials said.

Baiyin city mayor Zhang Xuchen said that at around midday a section of the ultramarathon course -- between kilometres 20 and 31 -- was "suddenly affected by disastrous weather".

"In a short period of time, hailstones and ice rain suddenly fell in the local area, and there were strong winds. The temperature sharply dropped," Zhang said.

At least 25 dead in Chinese province's heaviest rains in 1,000 years
« Reply #10 on: July 22, 2021, 08:36:39 PM »
At least 25 people have died in China's flood-stricken central province of Henan, a dozen of them in a subway line in its capital that was drenched by what weather officials called the heaviest rains for 1,000 years.

About 100,000 people have been evacuated in Zhengzhou, the capital, where rail and road transport have been disrupted, while dams and reservoirs have swelled to warning levels while thousands of troops launched a rescue effort in the province.

City authorities said more than 500 people were pulled to safety from the flooded subway, as social media images showed train commuters immersed in chest-deep waters in the dark and one station reduced to a large brown pool

The climate phenomenon known as La Niña brought early snow amid plunging temperatures across northern China on the weekend as the country struggles with the worst energy crisis in a decade.

Large parts of the country, including Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, and Inner Mongolia, experienced this winter's first significant snowfall and rain on Saturday, the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) said in a notice on Sunday.

The national weather service said northeastern provinces were likely to experience major snowfalls in the coming days, and the cold waves would continue to move southwards and hit most of China.

A yellow cold warning, the third highest level, has been issued to residents.

The CMA warned on Friday that the cold snap and snowfall could have a "negative impact" on the country's energy supply, agriculture and transport infrastructure.

"We need to pay attention to the negative impact it brings to energy supply, human health, pandemic control, infrastructure and agriculture," the notice said.

"The Inner Mongolia, northern and northeastern regions need to prepare for the negative impact of heavy snow and precipitation on the transport system, outdoor work and the eastern shore."

Meteorological experts have also warned that the extreme weather is likely to add pressure to the country as several regions have already been grappling with surging fuel prices and power shortages in recent months.

An exceptional ‘cold wave’ engulfed the majority of China over the weekend, delivering plunging lows and heavy snows.

On Saturday and Sunday, large parts of China, including Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, and Inner Mongolia, experienced their first snowfalls of the season, the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) said in a statement.

The cold snap, widely reported as being the earliest and most widespread in a decade (since the solar minimum of cycle 23), is affecting approx. 1.2 billion people and 90 percent of the regions across the country, including the southernmost tropical island of Hainan, where temperatures nosedived at least 8 degrees Celsius, reports globaltimes.cn.

A powerful cold wave is continuing to pound Eastern Asia this week–most notably China where heavy snowfall has effectively shutdown as host of towns and cities.

China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region as well as the northeastern provinces of Jilin, Liaoning and Heilongjiang have issued a combined 27 red alerts for ‘global warming goodness’ –the highest warning level– as a number of locales register their biggest snowfalls ever in books dating back more than a century.

Meteorologists in Tongliao, Inner Mongolia have called this snowstorm “an extremely random and sudden extreme weather event,” reports the globaltimes.cn. Accumulations there have reached 59 cm (23.2 inches), breaking a record held since 1951.

RARE SUMMER SNOWFALL HITS NORTHWEST CHINA
« Reply #16 on: July 31, 2022, 08:37:06 PM »
As reported by cgtn.com, an unusual freeze and rare, heavy summer snow has swept China’s Northwest provinces.

Inches of unseasonal snow have coated the mountainous regions of Gansu, as well as the neighboring province of Qinghai.

As the CGTN reporter notes in the video below, while snow is by no means unprecedented across these regions, known to fall even as late as May and June, to see “widespread, heavy snowfall during the hottest days of summer is rare”.

N. CHINA ENDURES HARSHEST ‘COLD WAVE’ SINCE 1987
« Reply #17 on: December 02, 2022, 07:16:34 AM »
Extreme cold conditions are gripping a large portion of China this week, while warmth prevails in the far South.
A harsh ‘cold wave’ has engulfed the Xinjiang region where a low of -48.6C (-55.5F) was observed on Monday.
This is the coldest reading since 1987, and one not far off the lowest November temperature ever recorded in China — the -50.7C (-59.3F) set at Keketuohai, Xinjiang on Nov 26, 1987 (solar minimum of cycle 21).

Today, the north of Xinjiang has experienced the strongest cold wave isince 1987. Qinghe National Weather Station has the lowest temperature of - 42.1C. The lowest temperature of AWS in Tuerhong is - 48.6C, close to the lowest record in November in China!(- 50.7C) https://t.co/v1chOwbxRC

CHINA APPROACHES -50C (-58F)
« Reply #18 on: December 20, 2022, 07:09:59 AM »
China’s lingering –and already record-breaking– freeze has intensified again this week, with Northern provinces in the grips of yet another fierce Arctic Outbreak.

Temperatures had plunged to -43.4C (-46.1F) on the Greater Hinggan Mountain yesterday evening, with thermometers expected to continue dropping overnight, to perhaps a record-busting -50C (-58F) by morning.

The polar air is now traversing south, into the tropics.

Xinfeng, for example, in Guangdong Province (23.9N), logged -3C (26.6F), the locale’s lowest temperature in 23 years — with more to come.

CHINA FORECAST FIRST -50C SINCE 1969
« Reply #19 on: January 23, 2023, 05:51:28 PM »
The likes of China, the Koreas and Japan are about to face another walloping of intense wintry cold starting this weekend.

Already the frigid temperatures are setting in across Northern China.

The northernmost city of Mohe, for example, saw its official thermometers sink below -45C (-49F) this morning (Jan 19), but looking ahead, temperature south of -50C (-58F) are in the forecast which would prove China’s first such reading since back in 1969.

Shifting attention a little south, to Myanmar (aka Burma), all-time records are already being felled there–or at least tied.

The western town of Hakha plunged to -6C (21.2F) on Wednesday, Jan 17, which matches Myanmar’s all-time national record low previously set in 1990, 2008 and 2021 — Myanmar appears to be cooling.
