Weather in AUSTRIA.
« on: December 08, 2020, 07:23:03 AM »
An extensive and strong upper-level ridge has developed over the North Atlantic, blocking the westerly zonal flow towards the European continent–a phenomenon found to increase during times of low solar activity (such as we’re experiencing now).

A particularly dangerous situation was expected to develop across the Alps on Sunday, December 6th, according to severe-weather.eu, and the deep trough certainly didn’t disappoint.

More than 2 meters (6.6 feet) of snow now buried parts of the Alps on Sunday, with another meter+ forecast overnight into Monday.

As a result, avalanche warnings were raised to their maximum level. In addition, there are currently no trains running on the Brenner Pass between Austria and Italy. And many passes and highways have also been blocked, reports en24news.com.

Power outages persist across the Italian portion of Tyrol, according to the region’s civil defense. Some 1,400 firefighters have been dispatched since Sunday morning to assist with the disruption.

RECORD-BREAKING SNOWSTORM HITS AUSTRIAN SKI RESORT
« Reply #1 on: December 13, 2020, 03:15:24 PM »
Record-breaking snowfall buried the Obertilliach Ski Resort in East Tyrol, Austria on Wed, Dec. 9, according to local reports, adding to the “historic” totals suffered across the Alps earlier in the week.

The snowstorm delivered more than ten feet of powder in some areas and resulted in 4,000 households in East Tyrol losing power, according to local media outlets.

Photos posted by Markus Bayrhofer to his Facebook page Storm and Thunderstorm Hunt Tirol reveal the staggering scale of the dump:

Avalanches, trees down, roads closed, train lines blocked. Search missions launched for avalanche victims…..

After the heavy snowfall, some roads and railways were still closed in Tyrol on Friday. An avalanche went off in Axamer Lizum in the late morning. Almost all of Tyrol has warning level 4 on the five-part scale.

Individual places such as Sölden in the Ötztal or St. Christoph am Arlberg were initially not accessible. In the Imst and Roppen area, around 200 households were without electricity on Friday morning.

The Lechtalstraße in Ausserfern, the Felbertauernstraße between Mittersill and Matrei in East Tyrol, the Ötztal Straße between Zwieselstein and the High Alpine Road and between Huben and Sölden and the Sellraintalstraße between Kühtai and Hagen were closed for the time being.

In rail traffic, trips over the Arlbeg and the Brenner are not permitted. The Arlbergbahn route remains closed due to the ongoing snowfall. The block was extended to the route from Bludenz to Ötztal on Friday morning, according to ÖBB. At the Brenner, the entire route to Innsbruck is interrupted for the time being. All around 280 employees are in the clearing operation, according to ÖBB press spokesman Christoph Gasser-Mair.

The route of tram line 6 in Innsbruck is also temporarily closed. Due to fallen trees, the Stubaitalbahn currently only runs to Kreith.
