Hobart's localised chill
« Reply #40 on: June 13, 2020, 09:40:47 PM »
Hobart has shivered through a rather cold day after a slow-moving trough stalled over the region.

Hobart only reached a top of 8.3 degrees during the daytime on Friday, about 4 degrees below average. The cool 7.6 degrees at 3pm was the lowest June 3pm temperature in 4 years..

Heavy rain approaching Eastern Tasmania
« Reply #41 on: June 20, 2020, 08:34:14 PM »
https://www.weatherzone.com.au/news/heavy-rain-approaching-eastern-tasmania/531641

The mix of a Tasman Low and a trough will direct some heavy rainfall to Tasmania’s east early in the week, possibly leading to some flash-flooding.

As a cold front and complex low pressure system crosses over southeastern Australia this weekend, a Tasman Low looks to form just off Victoria’s east coast and slowly track east.

While this low does not look too significant in terms of wind and waves, it will allow a trough to draw moist air from the Coral Sea, past Lord Howe Island, then wrapping around to condense over Tasmania’s east on Monday and Tuesday; a roughly 2500km journey.

Snowy Mountains, Australia – Nearly 40 inches of snow in 24 hours

The freshies in Thredbo were best yesterday morning, the snow getting heavier as the day went on. Photo: Thredbo
Mountainwatch |Reggae Elliss

Well, that was an incredible 24 hours for the NSW resorts with 70-100cms of snow in a 24-hour period, the higher totals falling above 1800 metres, but there was also snow all the way down to Jindabyne and beyond.

The first snow fall came through on Sunday with a few centimetres during the day before things kicked in overnight, leaving 17cms on the deck outside my place in Thredbo Village  and 40+cms on the mountain by yesterday morning.

The snow kept falling all day, dumping at times, before it finally eased at around 8pm last night and there’s a few lingering snow showers today. The result is 100% of the terrain  in the NSW resorts now has a good base and more lifts will open this week.

https://www.sott.net/article/438880-A-year-of-extremes-Bushfire-ravaged-towns-in-Australia-now-hit-by-severe-floods

Coastal towns ravaged by unrelenting bushfires just six months ago are now suffering severe floods after days of wild weather.

A low pressure system off Australia's east coast brought 120km/h winds overnight and dumped more than 180mm of rain across several areas of New South Wales.

Dramatic pictures captured the extent of severe flooding, which forced some residents to evacuate and left about 14,500 homes and businesses without power.

The towns in Shoalhaven, on the NSW south coast, had only just began recovering from the bushfires, which left hundreds homeless.

'It's been a shocker. It's terrible we have to go through this all over again,' Shoalhaven City Mayor Amanda Findley told Daily Mail Australia on Tuesday.

'This is actually our second flood since the bushfires.

Drought-stricken farmers are celebrating after heavy rains across south-east New South Wales have transformed landscapes and fortunes.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) said several rain records had been broken thanks to two consecutive lows off the east coast in recent weeks.

BOM climatologist Agata Imielska said much of the South Coast of NSW recorded more than four times the July average rain.

"Bega had very significant rainfall — recording 299.4 millimetres of rain which is the wettest July since 1922," she said.

"Moruya received 137mm in 24 hours which is a July record for daily rainfall in 65 years," she said.

"We've also seen some significant three-day rainfall totals — Narooma recorded 190mm and Brogo recorded 231mm — both creating new records."

A chilling week expected for Adelaide and Melbourne

A chilling week expected for Adelaide and Melbourne
Hannah Wilson, Sunday August 2, 2020 - 12:18 EST
Temperatures forecast for as low as 6 degrees below the August average in Adelaide and Melbourne this week, as a cold front leaves a chilling airmass in its wake.

A cold front and trough are expected to cross Australia's south east late on Monday morning, bringing a very cold airmass to the region along with some gusty onshore winds; only to add to the chill. While high pressure looks to build in the wake of this system, a lingering trough may continue to bring some partly cloudy conditions, limiting daytime heating, especially in Melbourne. A top of just 10 degrees is forecast for Tuesday in Melbourne, 5 degrees below the average. With some at times gusty southwesterly winds expected and possible showers and thunderstorms, it may potentially feel 2-3 degrees cooler.

Launceston First snowfall in Launceston Tasmania in almost 50 years
« Reply #46 on: August 10, 2020, 06:04:41 PM »
“I’ve never seen snow,”says 26-year-old resident.

The city of Launceston recorded the heaviest snowfall since the early 1970s, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

“The closest event for severity was in 1921 ,” says reader Byron Dawes.

People were extremely excited at the sight of the unusual phenomenon. Kiani Chippendale, 26, told CNN that he had never seen snow in Launceston.

“We stayed up all night, too excited to sleep. It’s never snowed here in this city … at least not since I was born.”

Even wombats were surprised

Coldest temperature ever recorded in Tasmania
« Reply #47 on: August 10, 2020, 06:08:46 PM »
Not just for the date and not just for the particular location, but the coldest for any date on record, and for the entire country.
__________

Liawenee, in Tasmania’s Central Highlands and already one of the coldest places in Australia, has just broken its own record.

Temperatures dropped to -14.2C (6.4F) yesterday morning, a new record low for the state.

Michael Lasko from the Bureau of Meteorology said the Liawenee temperature was 2C colder than the town’s previous record low of -12.2C, set back in 2013.

“It looks like that -14.2 is the coldest minimum for all of Tasmania,” Mr Lasko said.

The previous record for Tasmania was -13C at Tarraleah and Butlers Gorge back in 1983.

Wettest August in years for far western NSW
Esteban Abellan, Saturday August 15, 2020 - 11:08 EST
After widespread falls last week, another rain band swept much of NSW during Friday, making monthly totals already exceed the average in some places.

Bourke and Cobar collected 13mm from this last rain event, which makes the total rainfall so far this month exceed 30 and 40mm, respectively. Although these amounts may sound modest, they represent the highest monthly rainfall for August since 2014 and 2016, respectively. It is also remarkable that these figures are achieved in only the first two weeks of the month.

Wanaaring, on the Paroo River, has now technically had its wettest August on record (68mm), previously set in 1960 with 67.8mm. It is worth mentioning that the measurements in this town started as far back as 1884.

NSW can expect a "quite an unusual weather event" this weekend. - ABC
Saturday is set to be the coldest day of the year in NSW with high winds, low temperatures and snow expected to hit parts of the state.

Jane Golding from the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) said a deep low-pressure trough was creating "quite an unusual weather event".

"This could be the coldest day with the windchill factor we've seen all year," she said.

Gusty winds in excess of 90 kilometres per hour are forecast for most of NSW.

70 percent chance of La Niña forming, says weather agency
« Reply #50 on: August 23, 2020, 08:36:46 AM »
And rare thundersnow in Australia

The weather agency Weatherzone updated its El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) outlook saying there is a 70 per cent chance of La Niña forming before the end of 2020.

La Niña brings colder waters and causes sharp shifts in on-land weather conditions.

The last significant stretch of La Niña in Australia occurred between December 2010 and March 2011 and resulted in the country’s wettest two-year period on record.

Meanwhile, Antarctic air will continue to spread over south eastern Australia between now and Sunday, causing a wintry mix of wind, rain, hail and snow in multiple states,” Weatherzone meteorologist Ben Domensino said. “A few places may even witness rare thundersnow (lightning and snow at the same time).”

Hobart, Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney and Adelaide are all forecast to see drops in minimum temperatures into the single figures beginning tomorrow.

Snowy Canberra chilling through its coldest day in four years

Snowy Canberra chilling through its coldest day in four years
Brett Dutschke, Saturday August 22, 2020 - 17:00 EST
Canberra has been experiencing its coldest day in four years, struggling to a high of just 7.5 degrees after spending the middle of the day at about three degrees when rain turned to snow in the city.

Brisk wind which has occasionally gusted in excess of 50km/h has made it feel below freezing at times.

Even with the city warming a bit during the afternoon during glimpses of dry sunshine, a maximum temperature as high as 8.3 degrees would still make it the coldest day since July 2016.

The weather system responsible for this cold is an intense pool of cold air that has reared up from Antarctica way, spun across southeastern Australia. It has been bringing widespread wintry showers, small hail and lowland snow to Tasmania, Victoria, NSW and the ACT.

Canberra's wetter winter a welcome reprieve
« Reply #53 on: August 30, 2020, 04:07:38 PM »
With the second last day of August upon us, Canberra in winter 2020 has recorded more than four times the winter rainfall of 2019.

The total rainfall accumulated over June, July, and August this year tallied to 187.4 mm, compared to 40.8 mm for the same period last year. Even better, the 2020 rainfall was spread throughout the season instead of all dumped in a one or two day event that then left months of dryness in between.

Though certainly not ranking near the wettest winter seasons on record, it is the wettest winter since 2016.

Temperature wise, as is common in modern times, minimums were above average for all months with 10 fewer frost days over the season than the long term average.

Daytime maximums varied, with July being significantly warmer (1.8 degrees) than average, while August days, so far, were average to 0.5 degrees below average.

Unprecedented spring snow hits parts of Australia as multiple regions suffer col
« Reply #56 on: September 27, 2020, 08:24:57 AM »
Out-of-season snow is burying parts of South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales as the Grand Solar Minimum ramps-up its intensification.

The spring snowfall is incredibly rare, even unprecedented in some areas. Lismore and Lake Bolac in Victoria’s Western Districts, for example, saw snow accumulate to as low as 200 metres today–with more to come.

“They don’t see snow this time of year, or at all, very often,” said Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) senior forecaster, Keris Arndt.

Ballarat just experienced its coldest-ever September day on record, registering a max of just 5.8C at 10am on Friday morning — that’s 0.2C lower than the previous all-time record of 6C set on September 15, 1957.

In addition, a record-crushing low of 0.1C was recorded at 1.40pm (yes, ‘pm’), and “surprise snow” even accumulated across the city and surrounding areas.

Record-breaking freeze in Queensland
Joel Pippard, Sunday September 27, 2020 - 11:50 EST
Much of southern Queensland has woken up to a very chilly start, with temperatures not seen this late in spring in several decades.

Applethorpe fell to a mind-numbing -3.8 degrees this morning. This is the coldest temperature recorded in all of Queensland this late in spring since 1984.

Oakey also plunged into freezing territory, recording -2.1 degrees this morning, its coldest temperature this late in spring in 36 years. Likewise, Warwick hit -2.1 degrees, its coldest late spring temperature in 26 years of records.

The chill was also felt as far east as the beaches, with the Gold Coast recording its coldest late spring temperature in 28 years of records and its 2nd coldest of all spring on record, dropping down to 8.0 degrees. Brisbane Airport also followed suit, dropping to a brisk 7.0 degrees, its coldest temperature this late in spring in 26 years.
