Australia prepares for more wet weather as rain breaks records

Northern Australia will see an increase in rain in coming days as seasonal rains gather strength.

Authorities in the Australian state of Queensland have stepped up efforts to deliver essential supplies to stranded residents in the town of Thargomindah after the Bulloo River peaked at 5.4 metres on Sunday following the town's wettest day in 21 years.

As food and other items were being flown or ferried in to the western outback town, Bulloo mayor John Ferguson said the water had brought plenty of flies and mosquitoes - but spirits remained high.

Melbourne's wettest start to a year in five decades
« Reply #21 on: March 12, 2020, 07:25:23 PM »
https://www.weatherzone.com.au/news/melbournes-wettest-start-to-a-year-in-five-decades/531260

Melbourne is having its wettest start to a year in almost half a century, following one of the city's driest years on record.

Melbourne only received 374.4mm of rain during 2019, making it the city's driest year since 1997 and third driest in 164 years of records.

The remarkably low rainfall in Melbourne and many areas of Australia during 2019 was partially caused by a strong climate driver that peaked late in the year: a positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD).

However, once this positive IOD broke down and the Indian Ocean returned to a neutral phase, rain started returning to parts of southeastern Australia at the beginning of 2020.

In January, Melbourne collected 115mm of rain, making it the city's wettest month in just over two years. Then came February's 76mm, which was also more than any individual month in 2019. So far in March, Melbourne has picked up 65mm, already exceeding the long-term average for the month.

BOM rain outlook is good news and the Darling River is flowing, but beware the wintery blast
By Kate Doyle, Friday April 3, 2020 - 18:20 EDT
It is raining over large parts of the south-east, there is finally a good rainfall outlook after years of drought, and there is a flood of water heading down the Darling River.

So good news generally, but batten down the hatches if you are in the south-east this weekend.

Rain is still falling after days of widespread falls and the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has issued several .

Blair Trewin, senior climatologist for the BOM, said the days of widespread rain were the result of a trough that initially formed over eastern Australia and developed into a weak low over Victoria.

The trough dragged moist air from the Indian Ocean, which is abnormally warm and therefore providing ample moisture at the moment.

Record heat for southwest Western Australia
Sam Brown, Sunday April 12, 2020 - 12:37 EST
A heat trough over southwest Western Australia brought significant April warmth to the region yesterday.

Pearce, to the northeast of Perth, reached 40.7 degrees on Saturday, the hottest place in Australia, and its hottest April day in at least 80 years.

Perth itself reached 39.5 degrees, the hottest April day in at least 123 years of records in the WA capital. The previous record for April heat in the city was 37.6 degrees in 1910, with yesterday's heat significantly warmer.

Wandering, to the southeast of Perth, reached 37.6 degrees, which made it the hottest April day the site has experienced in at least 119 years of records.

It will be a noticeably coole

A taste of winter on its way

Esteban Abellan, Friday April 24, 2020 - 13:17 EST
A significant cold outbreak will impact the southeast mid next week.

A vigorous front will move up from the Southern Ocean, entering central parts of South Australia on Tuesday night and crossing Victoria, Tasmania, and New South Wales through Wednesday. Widespread rainfall is forecast ahead of the front, with the heaviest falls (more than 40mm) in northern Tasmania, northeastern Victoria and southeastern New South Wales. As the mercury drops significantly behind the front, rain will turn to snow over alpine parts of the southeast, with some large accumulations and blizzard conditions possible.

While the passage of cold fronts is not uncommon in April, such a strong frontal system is unusual for this time of the year. In Melbourne, the mercury may struggle to reach 14 degrees on Thursday, which has only happened three times in the last 15 years in April.

Melbourne is on track for one of its wettest four-month periods since records began with an icy blast from the Southern Ocean and heavy rainfall expected to arrive on Wednesday and hang around Victoria until Monday.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Michael Efron said rainfall this year had "just about exceeded what we had for all of last year for Melbourne".

A bit early for weather this cold in Canberra

https://www.weatherzone.com.au/news/a-bit-early-for-weather-this-cold-in-canberra/531418

The city is forecast to reach a top of seven degrees, although most of the day will feel even colder than this due to a biting wind chill.

If Canberra stays under 8.2ºC on Friday, this will be the city's coldest day on record this early in the season.

Prior to 2020, Canberra's earliest autumn day below eight degrees occurred on May 3rd, 1944, when the mercury only reached 7.2 degrees. Data for Canberra is available back to 1939.

Snow piling up in southeastern Australia

“Exceptionally cold for the start of May in many areas.”

Snow started settling on Australia’s highest mountains on Wednesday night. By Friday morning, some ski resorts had picked up more than 30cm (a foot) of fresh snow.

More snow is forecast for parts of Tasmania, Victoria and NSW over the weekend. By Sunday, some parts of the alps will have seen more than half a metre of fresh snow, an impressive dump for the start of May.

https://www.weatherzone.com.au/news/perth-storm-hits-with-force-as-fierce-cold-front-cuts-power-to-55000-homes-in-was-south-west/531447

Heavy rain and damaging winds from a fierce cold front which hit Perth and Western Australia's south-west have prompted hundreds of calls to emergency services and left 55,000 homes without power.

The State Emergency Service (SES) has responded to more than 500 requests for help since 5:00pm yesterday, when the cold front moved in from the south.

Winds gusting to more than 100 kilometres per hour toppled trees, damaged roofs and brought power lines down onto property and cars.

Areas affected were spread from the northern Perth suburbs to Merredin, but South West coastal areas including Mandurah and Rockingham were hit the hardest.

Cold air combined with clear skies and calm winds allowed the temperature to plummet in Perth during the last three mornings.

With minimums of 5.1 degrees on Saturday, 5.5 degrees on Sunday and 5.7 degrees on Monday, this was Perth's earliest trio of mornings below six degrees on record.

https://www.weatherzone.com.au/news/icy-blasts-send-shivers-across-queensland-causing-temperature-records-to-tumble/531520

Weather records for the month of May have tumbled across Queensland as a wintry blast caused temperatures to plummet.

The weather bureau said Blackall and Windorah in the state's south-west each had their coldest May days on record, yesterday.

Blackall reached a maximum temperature of 13.5 degrees Celsius and a low of 5.3C, while Windorah reached a maximum of 14.5C and a minimum of 3.3C.

Yesterday, Longreach also recorded its coldest maximum May temperature in 61 years while Charleville had a 51-year May record smashed.

Brisbane felt its coldest May maximum temperature in 40 years yesterday, reaching a top of 17.9C and a low of 11C overnight.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) said maximum temperatures were forecast to be five to 10 degrees Celsius below the May average this weekend.

BOM forecaster Lauren Pattie said North and Central Queensland would feel it the most.

Townsville is due to reach a top of just 17C, Charters Towers 14C, Rockhampton 13C and Bundaberg 15C.

Cold air mass looms over Queensland

Ms Pattie said it would be very cold across the entire state today.

"Thanks to a little bit of rainfall falling into some dry air: and that means we just get great evaporation and great cooling across that entire district," she said.

"Maybe an extra blanket or two — I'm not sure how North Queensland will go — I'm not sure anyone up there even owns doonas."

She said there was an "upper system at the moment that's causing a whole lot of cloud cover across the entire state".

"It's also a very cold air mass that's over the top of us," she said.

Sound and snow
« Reply #36 on: May 30, 2020, 06:07:56 PM »
https://www.weatherzone.com.au/news/sound-and-snow/531556

Thomas Hough, Saturday May 30, 2020 - 13:51 EST
Snow transforms landscapes into winter wonderlands, but it also does more than just change the visuals. Have you ever noticed how snow can affect sound?

If you've ever been anywhere after fresh snowfall you may have noticed things seemed quieter than usual. The age and different characteristics of snow can affect how sound waves travel, with fresh snow acting to dampen them. It acts like modern acoustic tiles, absorbing sound leading to quieter surroundings. The deeper the snow, the greater the absorption of sound.

As snow changes over time, becoming more compacted, smoother and harder, so does the way it  affects sound. As it becomes harder and more densely packed, its ability to absorb sound is reduced. Instead, the harder surface helps to reflect sound, making them seem clearer.
