Hail as big as golf balls and ferocious winds of up to 117 kilometres per hour have torn through Canberra in a storm that had residents running for cover.

The storm, which swept across the ACT and New South Wales — including the firegrounds — smashed windows, dented cars and tore branches off trees, causing localised flooding.

More than 1,000 homes lost power, with outages reported in Florey, Griffith, Deakin and Kambah, and dozens more suburbs across the territory.

Since midday, the ESA had received a record number of requests for assistance, more than 1,900, with ACT Ambulance Service attending to two people for minor injuries sustained during the storm.

Australia's third warmest January on record breaks prolonged run of drier-than-usual months

January was a month of impressive temperature contrasts in Australia. During the opening week of 2020, a pulse of hot air caused a spate of maximum temperature records in NSW. This included a whopping 48.9 degrees at Penrith in Western Sydney, which is the highest temperature ever recorded in any suburb of an Australian capital city.

But while temperatures were soaring in NSW during the opening week of 2020, cooler air combined with a blanket of cloud and rain caused parts of SA and Victoria to experience their coldest January day on record. This included maximum temperatures 15.9 degrees at Woomera and 17.5 degrees at Ceduna, two sites that have data available back to the 1940's.

Despite these contrasting temperatures across Australia, last month's national mean temperature was 1.45 degrees above the long-term average, making it the country's third warmest January in 111 years of records.

The scenic northern NSW town of Byron Bay has been hit with flooding after receiving almost 300mm of rain overnight.

Up to 275mm of rain has fallen in the Cape Byron rain gauges in the past 24 hours, according to the Bureau of Meteorology NSW.

The nearby town of Ballina also copped 175.6mm over the same period, and Coffs Harbour on the Mid North Coast has received 122.6mm, causing flooding on parts of the Pacific Highway in that area. The heavy rain today also reached Sydney, causing flash flooding in the city as 70mm fell on the CBD overnight.

The rainfall is reportedly the heaviest the town of Byron Bay has received in almost 50 years.

The main streets of Byron were hit with flash flooding, with locals and tourists sharing videos of water up to their ankles and mid calves.

The Bureau of Meteorology this morning issued a severe weather warning that stretches along the coast from the south of Wollongong up to Lismore in the north. Sydney, Wollongong and Newcastle could all be affected by flooding, the bureau says.

The state's coast copped extraordinarily high amounts of rainfall over the weekend, with Sydney recording its heaviest drenching in three decades and copping gale-force coastal winds.

he heavy rain continues to fall in South East Australia, with flooding affecting parts of southern Queensland over the last few days. This follows severe flooding in parts of New South Wales after days of heavy rain from 07 February.

Several parts of Queensland's Sunshine and Gold Coast areas recorded more than 170mm of rain in 24 hours to 13 February. According to the Bureau of Meteorology, Marcoola recorded 231.8mm of rain during this period, Nambour 200.8mm and Southport 177mm.

Queensland's State Emergency Service (SES) said it carried out 19 swift water rescues and responded to over 300 calls for assistance.

Warnings were issued for communities near the Coomera River at Oxenford, where river levels jumped to 3.02 metres (major flood stage is 2.5 metres).

Queensland Police reported that the body of a person was found in Conondale. The victim is thought to have been swept away by flood water. Police are also appealing for urgent public assistance to locate a woman reported missing near Gorge Falls in the Tallebudgera Valley, an area where a number of creeks have been impacted by recent rain.

On 11 February severe flooding affected parts of Queensland's Western Downs Region, with warnings issued for for Dalby where the Myall Creek broke its banks, and for Jandowae and Warra, where the Jandowae Creek overflowed.

Perth's wild weather over the last week has broken records as the city experienced its first five consecutive days of thunder and lightning in the summer months.

A severe storm hit the metropolitan area on Tuesday afternoon, flooding roads, tearing roofs off homes, uprooting trees and trapping some people in their cars.

On Thursday night came another severe weather warning from Gingin to Mandurah as a freak electrical show filled Perth's skyline.

The Perth area today recorded its fifth consecutive day of thunderstorm activity, which the Bureau of Meteorology said was a record for the summer months.

On average, Perth has around two days of thunderstorms in February.

For the first time in eight months, the NSW Rural Fire Service declared on Monday that there were no active bush or grass fires in NSW.

The declaration of no active fires brings to an end more than 240 days of continuous fire activity across the state.

Over the past several days the monsoon trough has been strengthening, with increased cloud and moisture developing.

The monsoon trough can be thought of like a global seabreeze, as winds blow from the cooler part of the planet (the hemisphere in winter) towards the warmer half of Earth (the summer hemisphere) to cool it down. In this case, winds are coming from India, southeast Asia, and Indonesia and blowing towards Papua New Guinea, and northern Australia.
