Two weeks ago, the Bureau of Meteorology officially declared a La Niña event underway.

To refresh your memory, La Niña refers to a change in the sea surface temperature and wind patterns across the equatorial Pacific Ocean - the upshot of which is a greatly increased likelihood of wetter-than-usual spring and summer weather across much of Australia.

As of 9am on Tuesday, October 13, Melbourne had registered 647.4mm of rain so far this year. The city's long-term annual average is 648.3mm.

Rain and severe thunderstorms will spread across a large swathe of northern, eastern and southeastern Australia during the second half of this week, likely continuing into next week as well.

Two separate low pressure troughs will produce wet and stormy weather in parts of eastern, central and southern Australia on Wednesday and Thursday. While some of these storms could become severe, this will be an entrée for what lies ahead.

Brisbane.
Hail up to 14 centimetres has been reported at Forestdale, south of Brisbane, as parts of south-east Queensland were pummelled by a series of very dangerous and "life threatening" thunderstorms this afternoon.

Hail storms also battered southern Sydney and parts of the New South Wales south coast were warned about flash flooding as an "unstable" weather system moved across the state.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) issued warnings for people in parts of Queensland's Wide Bay, Burnett, Darling Downs and Granite Belt regions earlier this afternoon.

Sydney shivered through its coldest November 5th in recorded history, and one of its coldest November days of all-time.

Sydney saw temperatures nosedive in just a few hours on Thursday morning, from 21C at 4am to 14C by 11am — 10C below the November average.

Temps continued sinking throughout the day, meaning 14C was Thursday’s high–a reading that comfortably busted the previous Nov. 5th record low-max of 15.3C set in 1881 (solar minimum of cycle 11).

According to Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) records, Thursday’s high of 14C was also not far off the coldest November maximum of all-time either, which stands as the 12.6C

Summer is just two weeks away and in Sydney this Monday afternoon, it definitely feels like it.

Temperatures in the Harbour City can vary dramatically between suburbs due to the cooling sea breeze effect in coastal areas, but most Sydney suburbs are uncomfortably hot this afternoon.

Just after 2 pm, Penrith in the outer western suburbs reached a sizzling 41 degrees, while temperatures reached the high 30s in much of Sydney's west. Closer to the coast, it was 34 degrees at Sydney Airport at 2 pm, and 30 degrees at Sydney's "official" weather station at Observatory Hill, adjacent to the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Penrith is consistently Sydney's hottest location. On January 4 this year, the suburb recorded the hottest ever temperature of any location in an Australian capital city, when it reached 48.9 degrees.

A line of dangerous showers and thunderstorms is moving over NSW, with a severe storm warning issued for some central and western parts of the state, including Sydney.

A low pressure trough passing over NSW from south to north has produced a line of intense showers and storms called a 'squall line'.

Earlier in the day, the squall line moved over southern NSW and the ACT, causing areas of blustery winds and heavy rain. Wind gusts reached 95km/h at Cabramurra just before midday, around half an hour before a gust of 93km/h was clocked at Mount Ginini.

Bedourie, a tiny map speck of 140 people in the Channel Country of far west Queensland, is famous for giving the world an iconic piece of steel cookware – the Bedourie Camp Oven.

But throughout November, the town itself has been more like a camp oven.

Bedourie's average maximum for November to date has been 39.7 degrees, which makes it among the hottest towns in Australia for the month.

Many of those days have seen temperatures peak in the mid-40s, while only five days have reached less than 39 degrees.

The hot topic over the last few days has been the heat in Sydney, and rightly so as Sydney-siders sweated through another day where the mercury went above 40 degrees. However, while Sydney has sweltered, Melbourne had the opposite.

Gusty northwesterly winds developed during the day on Sunday, drawing in heat and causing temperatures to rise in NSW. Bourke's top of 42.9 degrees capped off a trio of days where the maximum reached above 42 degrees, the first time this has happened since 2009. This was indicative of the hot temperatures experienced in NSW.

On Sunday, Observatory Hill in Sydney reached 40.5 degrees after observing a high of 40.8 degrees on Saturday. The last time Sydney saw back-to-back days this hot was in January of 1960, over 60 years ago.

On the same day, Melbourne only reached a top of 18.6 degrees. This was over 20 degrees below what Sydney experienced despite only being about 700km apart. Elsewhere in the Melbourne area, one of the lowest maximums registered was 14.5 degrees at Ferny Creek. The hottest maximum in Sydney was at the Airport, at 42.6 degrees. The difference between these two temperatures is just shy of 30 degrees.

As if 2020 couldn't get any weirder, snow has fallen on parts of Australia in the height of summer.

Victorian ski resort Mt Buller resembled a European winter on Sunday as flurries descended on the chalets and slopes.

Marketing manager David Clark said it was magical.

"Snow at this time of year is not unheard of," he told NCA NewsWire, explaining: "It probably snows a couple of times throughout summer each year.

"But to have it in December, so close to Christmas, was really nice."

Very dangerous storms bring wild winds and hail north of Brisbane as wild weather spreads across South-East Queensland

Very dangerous storms hit Redcliffe and areas north of Brisbane shortly before 3:00pm on Monday afternoon, according to the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM).

For several hours, a series of storm cells moved across South-East Queensland, from west of Gympie in the north to the inland border.

The first cell hit Caboolture and areas north of Brisbane, as a separate cell further south moved toward Stanthorpe.

The BOM said at 2:55pm very dangerous storms were detected near Redcliffe, Brighton, Scarborough, Deception Bay waters, Beachmere and Bribie Island.

At two properties on Bribie Island, wild winds sent trampolines flying across suburban backyards, one of them taking out a boundary fence.

There were also multiple reports of 4 centimetre hail at Bribie Island.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) continues to warn of heavy rainfall on the way for the NSW Mid North Coast and Northern Rivers regions, as emergency crews work to protect homes.

A low pressure trough off the that may ease on Sunday but come back with full force later in the evening.

The bad weather is expected to continue across Monday before easing on Tuesday.

The BOM said rainfall could be matched with thunderstorms, producing a high risk of flash flooding.

A flood watch and severe weather warning remain in place for heavy rain, damaging winds, abnormally high tides and damaging surf for the Northern Rivers and parts of the Mid North Coast.

Heavy rain is expected to continue in south-east Queensland today as a convergence line moves up from the south and a trough moves in from the east.

It is forecast to intensify this evening and coincide with high tides and gale-force winds tomorrow.

A severe weather warning is in place from Fraser Island to the New South Wales border for heavy rainfall and damaging winds.

In the Gold Coast hinterland, 475 millimetres of rain fell in Upper Springbrook in the 24 hours to 9:00am, with more than 300 millimetres of that falling in six hours overnight.

A low-pressure trough off the coast of south east Australia caused a wild weekend of weather for south east Queensland and northern New South Wales with torrential rain, damaging winds, abnormally high tides and dangerous surf.

Flood warnings are in place in southern Queensland and northern New South Wales (NSW) after heavy rainfall. In a 72 hour period to 14 December, 738 mm of rain fell in Upper Springbrook in Queensland, including 323mm in 6 hours overnight, 12 to 13 December. In NSW the highest rainfall totals were seen in Burringar with 424 mm in 72 hours.

NSW State Emergency Service (NSW SES) said areas of Northern Rivers and parts of Mid North Coast and Northern Tablelands Districts were among the worst affected. NSW SES said they had received 900 calls for assistance and carried out 4 flood rescue operations.

Widespread rain is on the way over the next few days over large parts of southern QLD, NSW, the ACT, SA, Victoria and Tasmania.

A pair of troughs are broadening over SA on Sunday, forming into rainbands. These bands of thick cloud and rain are drawing moisture in from the northwest shelf of Australia, an area that is currently experiencing the brunt of the monsoon trough and a tropical low.

With the source of moisture set up, an atmospheric ‘river’ helps direct the humid air into the troughs, which then cool the air and force it to fall as rain.

Severe thunderstorms are expected every day this week over parts of NSW as a series of troughs deepen over the state.

Monday will start with thunderstorms flashing across the Central Tablelands, Illawarra and South Coast as the sun rises, potentially bringing damaging winds and heavy rainfall.

As a southerly change moves up the coast during Monday, further storms are expected through much of the central and northern parts of the state, possibly including Sydney, Wollongong, Blue Mountains and Newcastle regions. These storms could produce large, possibly giant hail, damaging winds and heavy rain.

From Tuesday, the trough will start to stall over the northeast of the state. While showers are more likely for the coast, storms are likely to break out each day over the Northern Tablelands, Slopes and Plains. These storms are most likely to produce heavy rain, but could still lead to some large hail and damaging wind gusts.

Australia is having an unusually quiet start to the 2019/20 tropical cyclone season, which wasn't expected to happen during La Niña.

The official tropical cyclone season in Australia runs from November 1 to April 30. During this six-month period, we usually see around 11 tropical cyclones inside the Australian region and about four making landfall along our coastline.
