Gold Coast beaches closed all weekend with Cyclone Oma to batter coast

Gold Coast beaches closed all weekend with Cyclone Oma to batter coast

All 34 Gold Coast beaches have been closed for the next three days as Tropical Cyclone Oma bears down on the southern Queensland coast, bringing up to 300 millimetres of rain.

The weather bureau expected tidal peaks to exceed the highest tide of the year by a metre at exposed beaches because of the big swell generated by Cyclone Oma, combined with king tides.

World weatherwatch: Tropical Cyclone Oma pounds Queensland

Tropical Cyclone Oma has been meandering through the Coral Sea, east of Australia, for the past two weeks. Though the heaviest rainfall has remained offshore, Oma has brought gale-force winds and hazardous surf to the east coast of Queensland, with 10-metre-high waves recorded offshore at Byron Bay.

Anxious wait as residents brace for massive Cyclone Trevor
Cyclone Trevor is growing in strength as it barrels toward the Northern Territory  coast amid warnings of monster waves, flooding and destructive winds of more than 300km/h.

Falls Creek, Victoria
A week-long snow storm (if forecasts prove correct) is just getting underway in Australia.

The country's ski areas have reported up to 25cm of snowfall in the first 24 hours of the snowfall, which is due to continue through to the start of June - meteorological winter in the southern hemisphere - on June 1st.

Up to 70cm (2 feet, 4 inches) is expected to fall in total due to a front moving up from Antarctica.

The record-breaking Polar blast currently battering Australia’s southeast has brought widespread early snow across parts of Victoria, NSW and Tasmania — with the nation’s biggest ski resorts set to cash in by opening at least a week early.

Victoria’s Mount Buller is already under 13.8 inches (35 cm) of snow after days of blizzard conditions, and the resort village will open on Saturday instead of its original scheduled date of June 10.

Mount Hotham, also in Victoria, is experiencing “amazing” early-season totals of 25.6 inches (65 cm), along with well-below average temperatures of -7C (19.4F):

« Reply #28 on: June 01, 2019, 07:16:39 PM »
Several May temperature records – at least one more than a century old – were broken in southern Queensland overnight.

Applethorpe, Oakey and Dalby all suffered their coldest May mornings on record.

The temperature plummeted to -6.1 C in Applethorpe, –2.1 C below its previous record set 13 years ago.

Oakey dropped to -4.4, 0.3 of a degree cooler than its old record set in 2006.

Dalby had its coldest morning since 1911, recording -3.6.

Australia is in for torrential downpours following the winter solstice - the shortest day of the year - with winds set to lash the country, and some parts getting down to -9C.

Sydney will experience the worst of the cold snap, where heavy rain will hit the coast on Saturday afternoon, with 25mm forecast to fall on Sunday.

Temperatures will plunge to just -4.4C in Canberra, -9C in Cooma and Sydney will shiver through 6C weather.

Melburnians woke on Sunday morning to a thick blanket of fog engulfing their city, and it hung around all day holding temperatures at record low levels.

The city of Melbourne reached a maximum high of just 9.6C (49.3F) on Sunday — officially it’s coldest June day since 1985 (solar minimum of cycle 20).

Other record lows over the weekend include the 3.8C (38.8F) at South Australia’s grape-growing region Coonawarra — its coldest day in 37 years, with the region also extending its chilly run of mornings dipping below -2C (28.4F) to 5 (a feat which has not been achieved in 47 years).

While 12-year lows were also observed in Queensland’s Birdsville and St George with the mercury sinking to 0.5C (32.9F) and -2.9C (26.8F) respectively.

And 8-year-cold-records tumbled following the -3.8C (25.2F) in NSW’s Moree, the 0.8C (33.4F) in SA’s Coober Pedy, and the -3.8C (25.2F) in SA’s Naracoorte.

And the wintry conditions continued into Monday, with morning commuters battling freezing temperatures and severe frosts across much of south eastern Australia — with the BoM even issuing a frost warning for the region.

Yunta, north of Adelaide, recorded South Australia’s seven year low of -7.1C (18.3F).

While other notable Monday morning lows include the -0.5C (31.1F) at Edithburgh — the town’s lowest temperature in 22 years, and Noarlunga’s -2C (28.4F) — the suburb’s lowest in at least 19 years.

It was the coldest in 12 years at nearby Mt Gambier over the weekend — with -2.2C (28F) recorded.

https://www.weatherzone.com.au/news/grower-lathers-crops-in-molasses-to-protect-produce-as-south-australia-endures-consecutive-frosts/529871

As South Australian temperatures plummet below zero severely damaging crops, some growers are turning to creative methods to protect their produce.

The Bureau of Meteorology said yesterday's low of -5.7 degrees Celsius at Renmark in the state's Riverland was the equal-second coldest temperature on record for the town.

Meteorologist Matthew Bass said it was the region's sixth consecutive day below zero.

"Those sort of temperatures are not what we see very frequently in South Australia ... it's a very significant, severe low temperature."

Frost form when the dewpoint temperature has dropped below zero and the air is condensed to form ice crystals which then land on a surface.

Cold Australian nights, even in the tropics
« Reply #33 on: June 26, 2019, 09:07:17 PM »
The far north and far south of Australia both registered their lowest temperature in more than five years on Tuesday morning, according to Weatherzone.

In Tasmania, Hobart's -0.2 degrees Celsius shortly before 5am on Tuesday was the city's lowest temperature since 2013. It was also its third coldest morning in the last 20 years.

In the tropical north, Darwin Airport dipped to 12.7C just before 4:30am on Tuesday, which was their lowest temperature in eight years. Just to the ease of Darwin, Middle Point's 4.8C was its lowest temperature since at least 2001.

While cold mornings are common in Australia during winter, the chill on Tuesday morning was given a boost by dry air in both Tasmania and the north. Dry air allows much more cooling of the ground because it prevents the formation of mist or dew, both of which act as insulation for the surface.

Darwin Airport's coldest morning on record is 10.4C during July 1942, while Hobart's lowest was minus 2.8C, from July 1981 and June 1972.

TASMANIA’S RECORD BREAKING COLD AND DRY JUNE
« Reply #34 on: July 02, 2019, 07:22:59 PM »
Bureau of Meteorology climatologist Ian Barnes-Keoghan said record-breaking COLD NIGHTS and a continuing DROUGHT were the features of Tasmania’s weather over the past month.
https://electroverse.net/tasmanias-record-breaking-cold-and-dry-june-grand-minima-intensification/

COLD NIGHTS
The town of Ross registered its coldest June temperature on the 24th, when the mercury plunged to -6.7C (19.9F) — breaking it’s all-time record from 1993 (approaching solar minimum of cycle 22).

On the same day, King Island also recorded its coldest June temperature ever — a chilly 0.3C (32.5F).

All very well - nevertheless Tasmania was a little warmer than average in June, the Tmax surplus more than cancelling out the colder nights. The country as a whole was also a little warmer than average.

Nearly a week of heavy snowfalls have brought great powder snow conditions to the slopes of Australia and total accumulations of more than a metre at some areas.

Aussie ski areas have been giving the huge snowstorm different names, some going for "Polar Express" others "The Godzilla Snow Storm."

Thredbo Resort has been one of the big winners with nearly three feet of snowfall since last Wednesday. It reported 15cm (6 inches) last night taking storm total there to 85cm (34 inches).

However Perisher has posted the biggest total at 106cm (3.5 feet).

The blizzard of Oz

Shot by Sydney man Stephen Grenfell near a sheep farm outside Goulburn, about 121 miles west of Sydney, a large mob of kangaroos was spotted frolicking in the snow. The video has already racked up more than 700,000 views.

“Not something you see every day in Australia,” said Grenfell. “Kangaroos in the snow.”

After strong winds and freezing winter conditions swept across three south-eastern states, parts of the country experienced rare snowfall.

The snowfall also led to road closures outside of Sydney, while the cold caused flight cancellations and power cuts in about 10,000 homes in the south of the country.

Meanwhile, record snowfall hit the Bathurst and Blue Mountains, with Perisher and Thredbo also seeing plenty of fresh powder.

Victoria’s snowfields were also hit with more than a meter (more than 3 ft) of snow over the weekend, with more expected early this morning.

The Bureau of Meteorology said it had been the most low-level snow recorded across Victoria in more than a decade.

https://www.weatherzone.com.au/news/cold-snap-sends-shivers-across-southern-australia/530094

A mass of cold polar air caused rain, hail and snow across multiple states and territories during the weekend, with more wintry weather on the way in the coming days.

A strong cold front swept over southern Australia between Friday night and Monday morning, producing a wintry mix of weather from WA to NSW.
