Huge red dust storm envelops Australian town of Dubbo on New Year's Eve – video
Footage obtained from Stephen Ney shows a dust storm rolling in on New Year’s Eve in the New South Wales town of Dubbo.  Ney was lucky to get his drone down in time before the storm hit, while the massive dust cloud caused the evening's planned fireworks display to be cancelled (no audio)

Massive hailstones, damaging winds and torrential rainfall lash Sydney as temperatures drop by nearly 20C in just half an hour - so how long will the wild weather last?
Sydney has been smashed by hailstones, torrential rain, lightning and devastating winds after a day of extreme heat.

A severe thunderstorm warning was issued by The Bureau of Meteorology for Sydney, stretching to the Hunter coasts on Saturday.

Wild afternoon of weather causes one death, traffic havoc
The storms that broke a sultry fortnight on Saturday afternoon caused damage to houses, power lines, train networks and traffic signals.

A southerly change worked its way up from Wollongong with increasing intensity, hitting Sydney with storms in the early afternoon.

https://www.sott.net/article/404955-Australia-extreme-heatwave-Code-red-issued-as-Port-Augusta-hits-48-9C

Severe weather conditions forecast to bring maximum temperatures 8C to 16C above average, as three towns record overnight minimums of 33C

Port Augusta in South Australia has reached 48.9C on Tuesday, as a heatwave sets in across much of Australia threatening more record hot days.

All-time highest minimum temperatures have also been broken in three places. Meekatharra in Western Australia and Fowlers Gap and White Cliffs in New South Wales all registered an overnight minimum of 33C on Monday.

Severe to extreme heatwave conditions extending from the interior of WA across South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, the ACT and NSW will bring maximum temperatures of 8C to 12C above average, and in some places up to 16C above average before the end of the week.

From Tuesday through to Friday, parts of South Australia, Victoria and NSW may break January heat records, with daytime maximums extending up to the mid-40s.

"It's quite a significant heatwave because we are expecting a number of records to fall across those areas for both minimum and maximum temperatures," said Dean Sgarbossa, a senior meteorologist with the Bureau of Meteorology.

On Tuesday, Port Augusta in South Australia reached 48.9C, an all-time high since records began in 1962.

Australia feels the burn of an extreme heatwave

Most of the country has sweltered through a second straight day of higher-than-average temperatures, as a heatwave persists into its third day.

The Bureau of Meteorology earlier this week warned a record-breaking heatwave was on the horizon – and it wasn’t wrong.

Finally, the wet season is in sight in northern Australia, but the southern heatwave waxes and wanes.

Brisbane warned to brace for flooding as king tide hits

King tides are expected to inundate parts of south-east Queensland this week, with people urged to avoid parking their cars in areas prone to flooding.

The Brisbane City Council has warned that higher than normal high tides may be experienced in low-lying areas near the coast and riverside locations from Monday to Thursday.

Severe storm warning for Canberra

There's a warning of severe thunderstorms in the ACT on Tuesday evening.

The Bureau of Meteorology says that they could "produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding and damaging winds over the next several hours".

Far north Queensland river breaks 118-year flood record

A far north Queensland river reached a new record flood level in more than 100 years after experiencing heavy rainfall that forced the closure of a ferry and left a floating ticket booth behind.

The weather bureau reported the Daintree River at Daintree Village, about 56 kilometres from Port Douglas peaked at 12.6 metres just before midnight on Saturday compared to the previous record of 12.4 metres in 1901.

Townsville flooding could worsen with more heavy rain and dam releases

Weather News - Townsville flooding could worsen with more heavy rain and dam releases

Up to 20,000 homes could be flooded in the coming days if rain continues to fall in north Queensland as heavily as it has been, authorities have warned.

Acting Chief Superintendent Steve Munroe said the current mapping showed up to 500 homes were at risk of being impacted by floodwaters on Saturday night.

"If it continues tomorrow [Sunday] and the next day we could be up towards the 10,000 to 20,000," he said.

Hail, rain, wind – and dust storms – lash Victoria

Thousands of homes across Victoria were plunged into darkness as a dangerous thunderstorm brought giant hail, strong winds and heavy rainfall.

Melbourne retained its reputation as the city with four seasons in one day, as 30-degree daytime temperatures were swiftly overtaken by an intense thunderstorm on Wednesday afternoon, causing a train line to stop.
