SA to give August heat record a nudge

Brett Dutschke, Saturday August 12, 2017 - 11:03 EST
In more than 100 years of records, 36.5 degrees is the hottest it has been in South Australia in August, and this week will come close.
The far north town of Oodnadatta holds the record for hottest August day in the state, set in 1946, and will have another go on Tuesday.
The outback town, famous for its pink roadhouse, is about to turn a shade of red. It should reach about 34 degrees on Monday and about 36 degrees (14 degrees above average) on Tuesday as dry northwesterly winds draw heat from a baking northwestern Australia.
With help from ample sunshine, the WA Kimberley has been consistently reaching the mid thirties each day for the past week, two-to-three degrees hotter than the early August average.
In Oodnadatta, a sip of shandy or sarsparilla may be in order to quench the thirst. But watch out for blowing dust and flies as dry winds gust to about 50km/h at times.
At sunset, a relieving cooler wind change won't be far away. A southwesterly should arrive 8-9pm and drop the temperature below 20 degrees before midnight and below 15 degrees by sunrise on Wednesday. This cooler wind will hold Wednesday to a maximum near 25 degrees.

Apparently, it’s day six of Spring? Not here at Perisher, we’ve decided to cancel spring and extend winter! The temps have been sitting below zero and the snow is falling down like there is no tomorrow! 117cm of snow already and it's still dumping, but clearing up for the weekend. This is on top of over 2 meters of snow falling through August and SO much more due by this Friday.

Record-October rain in eastern Queensland
Ben Domensino, Tuesday, October 3, 2017 - 12:18 EDT
Parts of eastern Queensland received more than three months worth of rain on Monday during the season's first soaking.
An upper-level low moving across the state's south caused widespread rain and thunderstorms over central and eastern districts yesterday.
The heaviest falls occurred along the coast where moisture-laden onshore winds from the Coral Sea produced hundreds of millimetres of rain in a matter of hours.
Bundaberg Airport's 239mm during the 24 hours to 9am today was its heaviest rain since 2013 and their heaviest October rain on record. The deluge was also 3.5 times Bundaberg's monthly average at this time of year.
The highest rainfall totals for the 24 hours ending 9 am today were 319mm at another rain gauge in Bundaberg and 303mm at Woodgate.
Further south, Noosaville collected 124mm up to 9 am today, its heaviest October rain since 2010.
Falls of 50-80mm also occurred in central Queensland near Springsure and up to 63mm was registered near Roma in the Darling Downs. On average, these areas usually see about 50mm during October.
The upper-level low that caused yesterday's deluge in Queensland is moving towards the southeast today, allowing the heaviest rainfall to move offshore.
Despite lighter falls, showers and thunderstorms will occur over the southeast quarter of Queensland and a large area of northeast NSW today. Some of these storms may be severe.

Unseasonal snow and giant hail for New South Wales
«

Massive’ damage in some parts of northern NSW. (New South Wales is a state in southeastern Australia.)
Hail the size of golf balls fell at Narrabri, and 10cm of snow was recorded at Perisher.
Stephen Butcher, from Tregeagle, near Lismore, said the damage from Sunday night’s storm was “massive”.
“I fear for some of my stock, I have thousands of dollars worth of yearlings, two-year-old thoroughbreds in the paddocks,” he said.
“I could hear the roof tiles breaking with the force of the wind and the size of the hail. I’ve never seen anything like it.” “I’ve got massive fig trees that are just shredded.”
said it was the most severe hailstorm he had seen in 30 years of growing berries in the area.
“It was very very scary, said Otto Saeck, owner of Blueberry Fields at Brooklet near Byron Bay. “We were sitting in the middle of the house hoping the windows wouldn’t break.”
“It was like a tornado. We’ve lost most of the summer crop. We’ve got to spend hundreds of thousands in repair work.
