Weather for Canada N43 W81
« on: December 15, 2014, 03:16:28 PM »
Sunday December 14/14
Our mild spell continues for us...  for the next couple of days or so temperature all above freezing, and possibly a green Christmas.

No all-time records forecasted but certainly above the average of Hi 1c and Lo -7c
https://weather.gc.ca/forecast/public_bulletins_e.html?Bulletin=fpcn11.cwto
https://weather.gc.ca/forecast/public_bulletins_e.html?Bulletin=fpcn51.cwto

Wish some sunshine would be in the forecast though.

Paul

I was doing some 30 year Climate Normals sunshine comparison and found that:

NZ average of 38 locations is 2,013.5 annual hours (Hi is Blenheim = 2,475.3 hrs and Lo is Chatham Islands = 1,437.3 hrs)
Canada average of 100 locations is 1,984.4 annual hours (Hi is Medicine Hat, AB = 2,512.9 hrs and Lo is Prince Rupert, BC = 1,229.0 hrs)

We in most southern part of Canada (London, ON) are at 1,800.0 hrs and Yellowknife in the Artic at 2,264.8 hrs

Also we average from a low of 52 hrs in December (winter) to 262 hrs in July (summer) whereas new Zealand seems to have somewhat less variance from winter to summer months.

Some interesting historical weather data here http://komokaweather.com/komokaweather-ca/wxWeatherstatsWinners.php
Enjoy,
Paul

Sunday Dec 21, 2014 - IT IS WINTER sort of... the following from Environment Canada

Statements

10:18 PM EST Sunday 21 December 2014
Special weather statement in effect for:
•London - Parkhill - Eastern Middlesex County
•Strathroy - Komoka - Western Middlesex County

Some un-Christmas-like weather for the first few days of winter.

Sunday evening at 6:03 PM EST marked the official start of winter. But mother nature isn'T paying attention to the calendar. Milder weather will settle into the region over the next few days. The exception will be Eastern Ontario on Monday where seasonal temperatures will persist.

Some rain is likely on Tuesday as a developing low pressure system over the American Midwest tracks towards the Great Lakes. Some freezing rain is possible in Eastern Ontario before milder conditions arrive there later Tuesday.

Mild, rainy weather is expected again on Christmas Eve with temperatures reaching the high single digits in many areas with some locales nudging into the low teens.

On Christmas Day, mother nature will offer a meager attempt at a white Christmas in many areas as the disturbance over the Great Lakes intensifies and heads into Northern Ontario. Cooler temperatures, strong winds and some flurries are likely although Don'T expect much if any accumulation for a white Christmas.

There has been considerable discrepancy in the weather model guidance for this holiday period. Environment Canada will continue to monitor this developing weather for the Christmas period and issue statements and any necessary warnings.

A bitter cold and a beautiful clear bright sunny morning at a low of -24.3 which will make this number 9 in my Top 10 for low temperature.  Minimal wind so the Wind Chill of -26.3 will be a tie at number 10.

A high pressure of 1045.25 which is now the alltime high for my station and Top 10.

Looks like the Environment Canada forecast of a few days ago was off a bit:  forecast -17 actual -24.3

Alerts for: London - Middlesex

Warnings
12:15 AM EST Sunday 01 February 2015
Winter storm warning in effect for:
•London - Parkhill - Eastern Middlesex County
•Strathroy - Komoka - Western Middlesex County

Hazardous winter conditions are expected.

A developing winter storm from Colorado is tracking towards southern Ontario. Snow with this storm will begin early this morning and continue until Monday morning. Total snowfall amounts are expected to be 15 to 25 cm, although higher amounts may be possible especially near the Great Lakes. Also, winds will strengthen and become gusty this afternoon and evening, reducing visibilities to 0.5 km or less in blowing snow. The combination of snow and blowing snow will make for hazardous travelling conditions.

Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow. Visibility will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow. Take extra care when walking or driving in affected areas. Public Safety Canada encourages everyone to make an emergency plan and get an emergency kit with drinking water, food, medicine, a first-aid kit and a flashlight. For information on emergency plans and kits go to Get Prepared / Préparez-vous

Winter Storm Warnings are issued when multiple types of severe winter weather are expected to occur together.

Environment Canada meteorologists will update alerts as required, so stay tuned to your local media or Weatheradio. Email reports of severe weather to storm.ontario@ec.gc.ca or tweet with the hashtag #ONStorm.

A messy system is set to bring dangerous roadways to the eastern half of Canada. Meanwhile, the west is on track for a cool down. Here's your Tuesday weather brief.

Ontario: A new system will bring heavier snow to the province beginning in the morning hours of Tuesday in the southwest, reaching the GTA by the afternoon. There's potential for freezing rain in southern Ontario and the Golden Horseshoe in the afternoon and evening hours. Motorists are being warned to prepare for a dangerous, icy commute home. The system clears out Wednesday morning, leaving below-freezing temperatures and icy surfaces.

Stay in bed PaulMy
Yes good suggestion, and Tuesday is still part of my 5-day weekends so won't be missing any work ;D
But I do need to get up to do my report to CoCoRaHS, and also feed the birds!

That freezing rain is much worse for driving than most of the light snow we've been getting lately so glad that I can stay at home with those conditions.

Still early spring here but yard work has started (rolled and aerated the lawn today) and typical mid-April forecast -
Tonight: Clear. Low 6.
Saturday: Mainly sunny. Wind becoming north 20 km/h late in the morning. High 20. UV index 7 or high.
Saturday night: A few clouds. Wind becoming east 20 km/h after midnight. Low plus 3.
Sunday: Cloudy with 60 percent chance of showers. Windy. High 17.
Monday: Showers. Windy. Low 10. High 15.

Another few weeks before the blossoms will appear.
