Up to 100,000 people may be evacuated from flood-hit regions in the Amur, Khabarovsk and Jewish Autonomous Regions in Russia’s Far East. However, dozens of bridges have been swamped by the waters, complicating the evacuation.

Water levels at local reservoirs have already reached historic highs, and officials say the floods are expected to continue rising even further.

Triggered by a month of heavy rain, the area adjacent to the Amur River near Khabarovsk is experiencing its highest water level ever.  Authorities fear that by August 25, the water level will reach the seven-meter mark.

In some areas, water levels rose 72 cm on Saturday alone.

The worst-hit areas are the rural villages. The floods have hit more than 120 villages, leaving much of the surrounding areas submerged.

The biggest industry in this region is farming. The farmers grow things like tomatoes and potatoes and sell them locally. They also sell to China. But with 400,000 hectares under water, it’s clear that it’s not just people’s homes being damaged, but also, potentially, their livelihoods.—
