Extreme cold and snow kill at least 54 in Afghanistan, Pakistan
« on: January 14, 2020, 08:31:51 PM »
Fourteen killed in Pakistan in the past 24 hours alone, mainly when roofs collapsed under heavy snowfall.

Severe winter weather combined with harsh cold has left dozens dead across Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Heavy snowfall has closed many, if not most, key roads since New Year’s Day, including a key tunnel that connects central Afghanistan with the north of the country and the Kabul-Kandahar highway, Reuters reported.

Residents of the Afghan capital, Kabul, where temperatures dropped to 5F on Monday, struggled to get to work on snow-covered roads. Officials are concerned the death toll may climb due to the severe cold.

In neighboring Pakistan, much of the damage was reported in the southwestern Baluchistan province where at least 30 people were killed.

Heavy snowfall also forced closures of many Pakistan highways, with parts in the province under 6 inches of snow.
