Work began on the earthquake-damaged Kilmore St hotel in December and was expected to take 27 weeks.
The work is being done by Mackay Leighs Demolition, a joint venture formed last year between Leighs Construction and American demolition firm Grant Mackay.
Workers stripped the building of all materials before excavators, including a 40-metre, ultra-high-reach machine, began demolishing the structure.
"The basement will be removed and backfilled and the site will eventually be grassed over," Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority operations general manager Warwick Isaacs said.
The hotel sits across Victoria St, which was blocked off in 1988 to allow what was then the Parkroyal Hotel to be built.
It is not yet known if the road will be reopened.
