Winter has reasserted itself across the Carpathians, with fresh snowfall and a sharp drop in temperatures hitting the Ukrainian highlands.
On March 19, snow covered the slopes of Mount Pip Ivan, visibility collapsed, and temperatures fell to -8C (18F). Gusty winds further reducing visibility and drove the wind chill around -20C (-4F), according to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine.

This is not an isolated pocket.
Across much of eastern Europe, temperatures remain suppressed for mid-March. Overnight lows are hovering near freezing or below in many regions, with wet snow reported beyond the high terrain.
Anomalous snow has settled to the south as well.
The Parnassos Ski Center in Greece reported 20 cm (8 inches) of fresh accumulation Friday morning:
