But the nor’wester which spread up the east coast of the South Island on August 1, 1975, was the strongest and most damaging ever recorded.
It remains the windiest day Christchurch has experienced, with a phenomenal maximum wind gust of 93 knots (172kph) at the airport, a few minutes before 7.30am. Inland, gusts reached more than 100 knots, with 104 knots (193kph) recorded at Mt John. At Kaikōura, the highest gust was a staggering 105 knots (195kph).
