MEGA SNOWSTORM” DELIVERS 12 FEET OF SNOW TO ARGENTINA AND CHILE

MEGA SNOWSTORM” DELIVERS 12 FEET OF SNOW TO ARGENTINA AND CHILE
Again, ‘swings between extremes‘ sums up South America’s winter — from record warmth, to record chills and exceptional snow totals.

A powerful winter storm has delivered in excess of 12 feet of snow to ski areas across the Andes.

Las Leñas Resort in Argentina–for example–is one such area, with more than 12 feet of fresh powder accumulating at its mid-mountain station over the past four days: “a ridiculous amount of snow,” states snowbrains.com in a recent article.

“This will certainly be a storm to remember,” the SB article continues. “It is not uncommon for the area to have storms that drop three to five feet of snow, but a storm this big may only come every five years or so.”

Though the resort remains open, the access road has been blocked and employees are working hard on avalanche mitigation.

Below are the top 4 totals to hit Argentina and Chile this week during what PowderQuest labelled a “mega snowstorm”:

1) Las Leñas, Argentina — 13 feet (4m)
2) Portillo, Chile — 8 feet (2.4m)
3) Valle Nevado, Chile — 5-6 feet (1.8m)
4) Catedral, Argentina — 4 feet (1.5m)

Heavy falls also hit southern Chilean resorts, with Corralco reporting almost 4 feet (1.2m) in the last 36 hours alone, and Nevados de Chillan noting 3.4 feet (1.05m).

Ski resorts up and down and around the Andes are celebrating the recent record-challenging totals as they suggest great business for the remainder of the season.

LA LEÑAS, ARGENTINA HIT WITH 8 FEET OF SPRING SNOW
Recently, Las Leñas, Argentina was forecast an impressive 1m (3.3ft) of spring snowfall within a 24-hour period. However, so much snow fell that the official accumulation remained unclear, nobody could get out to measure it — until now.

As per the official reporting, an astonishing 2.5m (8.2ft) accumulated at the mountain summit in less than a day.

Despite these historic falls, however, eager winter sports enthusiasts remain unable to hit the slopes due to what snowboarder.com has described as a “sky-high avalanche danger”.

COOL SEPTEMBER FOR ARGENTINA
« Reply #3 on: October 17, 2023, 06:17:48 PM »
September 2023 in Argentina was colder than the average, quite substantially so in the south, namely Patagonia:

[SMN]

Incredible snows have accompanied the anomalous lows, particularly across Patagonia.

Ezoic
Back in mid-September –and hot on the heels of receiving 3ft in just 24 hours, and before that, 10ft in 4 days– Argentina’s Las Leñas ski area received yet another fresh pounding of snow, with totals again exceeding 10 feet.

Many Las Leñas residents were left battling the snow, unable to leave their homes.

Similarly in neighboring Uruguay, September temperatures also averaged below/near normal (slightly above in the north):

"Patagonia Is Absolutely Buried"
The early-May snow in South America has been truly jaw-dropping.

Beginning in Bariloche, Argentina —and adding to Tuesday's report— autumn appears to have been skipped entirely, with the Río Negro region jumping straight into winter after receiving as much as 8 feet of snow.

Ski resorts here weren’t due to open for another month+.

“Heavy snowfall that fell in the mountain region of Río Negro keeps the Bariloche airport closed. For now, it was reported that the measure will be in effect until 10 a.m. on Monday.” — mishikasingh on X

“Ridiculous amounts of snow at the base of Catedral in Patagonia Argentina” — Powderhounds on X

"This is not normal," said David Owen, of Andes backcountry guiding service PowderQuest in a recent interview for powder.com.

"Everyone has been blown away. The locals are claiming this is an historical event. It has been snowing for nearly a week now. While May always sees snow in Patagonia, the intensity of these back to back storms has never been seen at this time of year.

"Patagonia is absolutely buried.

"While Bariloche has been hit the hardest, all the ski areas in Argentina's Patagonia are also covered in snow. Over in Chile, Nevados de Chillan, Corralco and the smaller ski areas south have also been hit quite hard this week," concluded Owen.

Argentina's Cold May
« Reply #6 on: June 16, 2024, 08:59:32 AM »
It has proved a cold (and snowy) May for much of South America, particularly for Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile and Argentina.

Historic cold struck Chile:

"Since 1950 onwards (i.e., in the last 74 years), we have not had such an intense cold spell in May," said Raul Cordero, Climatologist at the University of Santiago. Rare snowfall also struck the capital city on May 7.

Further south, Patagonia was "absolutely buried" in mid-May, with locals claiming a "historical event":

Unprecedented wildfires ravage Brazil's wetlands
« Reply #7 on: June 16, 2024, 09:40:22 AM »
As Jose Cleiton and Brandao Amilton ride their horses into the vastness of the Pantanal grassy wetlands of Brazil, a wall of smoke towers from the horizon far into the sky above.

The worst of the dry season is still far off, but already these Brazilian wetlands are so dry that wildfires are surging.

The number of Pantanal fires so far this year has jumped tenfold from the same period last year according to Brazil's National Institute of Space Research (INPE).

"It's hard to breathe. It's hard for newborn children. The heat gets stronger and stronger," said Amilton, a local fishing guide. "The Pantanal is already hot and it gets hotter, drier, with smoke, the weather gets very bad."

The men guide cattle across the flood plain, hoping for a better chance of survival. "The way the fire is coming, it could surround them and burn them to death," said Cleiton, a farmer.

The Pantanal wetlands, roughly 10 times the size of the Florida everglades, are home to jaguars, tapirs, caimans and giant anteaters. Weak rains since late last year have disrupted the usual seasonal flooding, leaving more of the region vulnerable to fires.

As the region approaches the riskiest season for wildfires, which usually peak in September, experts are warning that the blazes so far this year are worse than the start of a record 2020, when a third of the Pantanal burned.

More than 3,400 square km (1,315 sq miles) of the Pantanal have burned from Jan. 1 to June 9, the highest level on record, according to the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro's satellite monitoring program, with data going back to 2012.

And Snow To Sweep America;
« Reply #8 on: June 23, 2024, 09:39:20 AM »
Resorts in Argentina and Chile are continuing to experience massive snowfalls, with some areas receiving over a meter (nearly 4 feet) in just 24 hours.

The latest falls are part of an ongoing trend of cold and snowy weather that has persisted for months. Since the beginning of the year, the region has seen historic accumulations, particularly in Patagonia where totals have reached unprecedented levels.

A number of ski resorts have already accumulated over 3 meters (10 feet) of snow, and most have opened their slopes weeks before the official start of the season.

Portillo in Chile is among the beneficiaries, reporting 113 cm (just under 4 feet) of snowfall in the last 24 hours alone, bringing its season total to 313 cm (10.5 feet).

Chile's Portillo has received 113cm (nearly 4 feet) of snowfall in the past 24 hours.

Ski areas across both Chile and Argentina are boasting similarly impressive conditions. Valle Nevado and La Parva have each received over 1.5 meters (5 feet) of snow in the past few days, adding to the significant snow dumps of late that have contributed to a robust snowpack that is riding well above average for the time of year.

The persistent snows over the past few months have been remarkable, with frequent storms dropping fresh powder almost weekly. The falls across Patagonia have historic. Several areas have reported record-breaking accumulations, with some locations seeing the highest snow totals in decades.

Avalanches Strand Dozens in Chile
« Reply #9 on: July 07, 2024, 09:01:29 AM »
The recent record-breaking snowfall has stranded dozens of people in mountain towns east of Santiago, Chile following a number of avalanches. The snow combined with extreme cold has caused significant disruptions, blocking roads, knocking out the power, and isolating communities.

In the Chilean province of Maipo, for example, heavy snowstorms have led to towering accumulations. Two towns in the Cajon del Maipo mountain range, along with a ski center, have been cut off, with authorities working to reach and evacuate those stranded.

At Lagunillas Ski Center, some 33 people, including 8 children, remain trapped, but food supplies have been successfully delivered. While in Lo Barnechea, Carabineros an avalanche buried Route G-251 in Valle Nevado, burying at least one vehicle:

South America's Snowiest Start To A Season In 30-Years
« Reply #10 on: July 07, 2024, 09:07:13 AM »
The ski season in South America is shaping up to be one of the most remarkable in decades. Early-season snowfall has been abundant, with multiple storms blanketing resorts across Chile and Argentina.

Conditions have allowed many resorts to open weeks earlier than usual, with the season expected to extend to late-October.

In Chile, locals are calling it to the best start to a season in 30 years.

The Chilean Resort of Valle Nevado, for instance, has already received 87% of its average winter snowfall, accumulating more than 209 inches. The resort opened three weeks early on May 31, benefiting from a massive storm that dumped six feet, chased by another that dropped two more.

Argentina Continues To Freeze
« Reply #11 on: July 21, 2024, 08:48:16 AM »

Swaths of Argentina recorded notably low temperatures again Sunday: Santa Rosa del Conlara saw -9C (15.8F), Villa Reynolds hit -8.7C (16.3F), Coronel Suarez -7.1C (19.2F), Azul -6.8C (19.8F), Tandil -6.5C (20.3F), El Palomar -6.0C (21.2F), La Plata -5.2C (22.6F), and Junín -5C (23F).

Snowfall has been unusually heavy and widespread this season and all.

Vast areas of the Andes have posted totals of over 2 m (6.5 ft), Southern Argentina and Chile up to 1.5 m (5 ft), and Brazil's southern states like Rio Grande do Sul have reported up to 30 cm (12 inches).

The extreme cold and snow have put strains on infrastructure. Snow and ice have led to road closures, disrupting travel and logistics. Increased demand for heating has strained power grids, leading to occasional outages.

Agriculture has also been impacted, with frost damage already leading to reduced yields and economic losses. Fruit orchards and vineyards are particularly vulnerable. Likewise, livestock farmers are taking extra measures to protect their animals.

The cold has been felling records in some spots.

Yesterday, Iguazú logged a high of just 8.3C (46.9F), the third lowest daily maximum in its recorded history, rivaling the all-time record set back in 1965. Additionally, this made for the city's fourth consecutive daily high below 10C (50F), an unprecedented feat with the previous record being three consecutive days set during the July of 2000..

Buenos Aires' Coldest First Half of July On Record
« Reply #12 on: July 21, 2024, 08:53:45 AM »
Argentina has been having a historically cold and snowy time of it this winter.

This graph shows the average temperature in Buenos Aires for the first half of July from 1950 to 2024, based on observations from the city's official Central Observatory.

The first half of July this year, with an average temperature of 7.3C (45.1F), was the coldest since records began in 1950.

The Buenos Aires Astronomical Observatory, established in 1872, has been instrumental in climatological studies through its systematic collection of temperature data.

Initially supporting astronomical observations, the observatory included meteorological measurements to correlate with atmospheric conditions, with reliable records dating back to 1950.

Unfortunately for the alarmists, during the first half of July at least, the dataset shows no trend.

Southern Hemisphere Snow Round-Up: Argentina and Chile Pounded
« Reply #13 on: September 15, 2024, 08:28:10 AM »
As spring arrives in the Southern Hemisphere, Argentina and Chile continue to see deep snowpacks and frequent snowfall. While Australia and New Zealand are facing milder conditions and dwindling snow, the mountains of South America, most notably the Andes, remain cold and snowy, providing excellent late-season skiing.

Australia and New Zealand
Australia and New Zealand’s ski seasons have struggled of late, with warmer temperatures and melting snow the theme.

A recent Antarctic blast did help matters, delivering fresh snow to a few Aussie resorts, though many have already closed or reduced terrain. While in New Zealand, the cold front dropped fresh powder to higher elevations, temporarily improving conditions despite ongoing challenges from rain and wind.

200 feared trapped in Brazil landslide
« Reply #15 on: October 13, 2024, 09:40:02 AM »
Some 200 people may have been buried after a landslide occurred Monday in a port area of Manacapuru, Brazil's Amazonas state, according to official sources, Xinhua reports.

The Military Firefighters Corps of the State of Rio de Janeiro said that the land supporting part of the Terra Preta Port, located on the banks of the Amazon River, slid due to unknown reasons. Although the area was under construction, the port continued to operate as a key transportation point.

It is estimated that over 200 people were loading and unloading goods at the site when the accident occurred. Initial reports confirmed that an entire family on a floating boat was buried. Additionally, debris from boats, pipes, houses, and vehicles has been found in the waters of the Amazon River.

Valle Nevado Wraps Up Longest/Snowiest Season Ever
« Reply #16 on: October 27, 2024, 09:23:57 AM »
Valle Nevado, Chile, concluded its 2024 ski season on Sunday, October 20, after a remarkable 143 days on the slopes—the longest in its 36-year history. The extended season was driven by persistent, exceptional snowfall and high demand.

Early snowstorms set the tone, allowing Valle Nevado to open ahead of schedule back on May 31, with full operations starting on June 7—two weeks earlier than planned.

Throughout the season, the resort received some 23 feet of snow, a new record that not only ensured excellent skiing conditions but also allowed for a two-week extension beyond the scheduled closing date.

"This season was truly one for the books," said Ricardo Margulis, the resort's General Manager.

Colombia: Bogota braces for more powerful storms following flash flooding
« Reply #17 on: November 10, 2024, 09:07:22 AM »
After a severe electrical storm swept over Bogotá on Wednesday, November 6, triggering flash floods across the capital and causing the Torca wetland to overflow, authorities are preparing for potentially more intense weather. The storm, which hit during the evening rush hour, unleashed lightning, heavy rain, and floods that halted mobility across the city. The situation worsened when Bogotá's El Dorado Airport suspended all operations, leaving passengers stranded and facing lengthy delays as airlines scrambled to reschedule flights.

Mayor Carlos Fernando Galán reported that emergency response teams attended to over 26 critical points in the city, particularly in the hard-hit districts of Usaquén, Suba, and Ciudad Bolívar. The intensity of the rains over four hours also overwhelmed Bogotá's drainage systems, resulting in flooding along Calle 80, Avenida Caracas, and Calle 26. As essential corridors shut down due to rising water levels, the Autopista Norte (North Highway) faced a serious emergency with approximately 500 cars trapped in deep water. With emergency crews working overnight to rescue people from their vehicles, Mayor Galán announced that schools located in the north of the Colombian capital would suspend classes, as more rainfall is expected on Thursday and possibly through the weekend.

Eight hours of nonstop rain left the city of 350,000 people largely underwater, and forced authorities to evacuate the Jose Penna hospital.

Television images showed medical personnel evacuating babies from the hospital's neonatal unit, and the army was deployed to assist in rescue efforts.

Some 1,321 people were evacuated to safety in the city, which is about 600 kilometers (about 375 miles) south of the capital Buenos Aires, according to Mayor Federico Susbielles' office. The national government authorised emergency aid of 10 billion pesos (about 9.2 million dollars).

The city received more than 400 millimeters (15 inches) of rain in just hours -- equivalent to what it normally gets in a year, "something unprecedented," according to Javier Alonso, security minister for Buenos Aires province.

"The biggest storm in Bahia Blanca was in 1930, with 175 millimeters. This is almost three times bigger," said Alonso.

Argentina lowest maximum temperature ever documented in the area.
« Reply #19 on: June 15, 2025, 08:40:14 AM »
South America is currently experiencing an unusual early cold spell that is sweeping across the continent /https://mkweather.com/south-american-polar-bomb-snow-in...//, bringing frigid temperatures well beyond typical winter zones and even reaching into tropical regions. This rare meteorological event has captured the attention of weather experts and local populations alike, as temperatures plunge to record lows during the month of May — a period typically transitioning toward warmer seasonal weather.
One of the most notable impacts of this cold wave has been recorded in northeastern Argentina, where the town of Bernardo de Irigoyen in the province of Misiones experienced an unprecedentedly low maximum temperature for May. On May 29, 2025, Bernardo de Irigoyen’s daytime high reached only 7.3°C, setting a new monthly record for the lowest maximum temperature ever documented in the area. This broke the previous record of 7.7°C, which had stood since May 29, 2007.
The town’s new record highlights the intensity and extent of the cold air mass penetrating the continent. Bernardo de Irigoyen, located near the subtropical border, usually enjoys relatively mild temperatures during May. However, the current cold spell has brought a stark chill to the region, dramatically altering local weather conditions and affecting daily life.
