Weather in Greenland 2023- up
«

April 14, 2023, 07:15:29 AM »
Following record-breaking snow and ice gains at the start of the season, and then a rather quiet March, Greenland’s surface mass balance (SMB) is once again firing into unprecedented territory.
Saturday and Sunday saw the Greenland ice sheet gain 7 and 6 gigatons, respectively — record highs for the time of year in DMI weather books dating back to 1981.

The latest images from Iceland show buildings destroyed by a river of lava after a volcano erupted on the weekend.
A volcanic system on the Reykjanes Peninsula in the country's southwest erupted late Saturday for the fourth time in three months, sending orange jets of lava into the night sky.
Iceland's Meteorological Office said the eruption opened a fissure in the earth about three kilometres long between the mountains of Stóra-Skógfell and Hagafell.

-57.9°C in Greenland

Temperatures in Greenland have fallen sharply recently.
The thermometer in Summit read -55.1°C on Saturday. On Monday it got even colder to -57.9°C - about 15°C below the seasonal norm.
The exceptional cold in the far north has contributed to Arctic sea ice extent remaining above normal this season. According to the latest data, the current extent is higher than that of 2023, 2022, 2021, 2020, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2014, 2011, 2009, 2007, 2006, 2005 and 2004:

Greenland's Record-Breaking Ice Gains

Summer is fast-approaching in the NH, the time of year when the overpowering forcing that is atmospheric carbon dioxide should be sending the Greenland ice sheet careening into the Atlantic ocean (so goes the doctrine).
Instead, fierce chills and sizable snow dumps have delivered the island its largest late-May SMB gains in Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) records dating back to 1981:
[DMI]
Despite mainstream obfuscations and outright fabrications, nothing remarkable continues to occur on the Greenland ice sheet:
Figures are in Gt per year. Chart based on updates to Mankoff et al. (2021). Created by Carbon Brief.
The story of this season seems to be one of a late pickup.
This is visualized in Total Snow Mass for the Northern Hemisphere, which is now posting above-average accumulations:

This follows multiple season's of well-above-average mass:

Similarly, Arctic sea ice is also refusing to follow the alarmist script, with current extent higher than it was in 1995:
And eyeing the southern hemisphere, Antarctic sea ice extent is currently higher than it was in 1980:
Sea ice at the bottom of the world is seen to be continuing its strong recovery after 2023's anomaly:

50 Billion Tons Of Snow Has Fallen On Greenland So Far In June
«
Reply #5 on:
June 16, 2024, 09:10:09 AM »
Since the start of June, Greenland has received more than 50 billion tons of snow, adding significant mass to the ice sheet.
Data from the Danish Meteorological Institute (via Polar Portal) shows significant, record-challenging gains so far this month.
The Snow Mass Balance (SMB) chart (below) reveals daily gains nearing 6 gigatons, contrasting the typical summer melt which typically commences after mid-May. The recent accumulations far-exceed the long-term average (1981-2010).
[DMI]
According to The Science, Greenland should be well on its way to melting by now.
However, nothing alarming continues to occur:

Greenland Gaining Gigatons Of Mass In Summer
«
Reply #6 on:
July 07, 2024, 09:28:40 AM »
On July 1, 2024, Greenland's ice sheet posted an unprecedented ≈4 Gigaton summer gain. Data from the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) show this is the highest daily July gain since records began in 1981.
During a period usually marked by significant summer melt, the charts show extensive snow and ice accumulation, with deep blue areas indicating significant mass gains.
The 1981-2010 averages call for a 4 Gigaton melt at this time of year, what we saw yesterday was a 4 Gigaton gain, adding to the ≈2 Gigaton gain the day before.
[DMI]
Several factors have contributed to the narrative-defying gains.
1) This summer has seen cooler-than-average temperatures in the Arctic, slowing the melt. 2) Cooler water brought by ocean currents has reduced ice melt. And 3) unusually high summer snowfall has added significantly to the ice sheet's mass.
These gains challenge the simplistic mainstream climate models calling for accelerated melt due to human prosperity.
Frustratingly for the alarmists, this season looks set to be another with above-average SMB for the Greenland Ice Sheet:

Greenland’s ice sheet is showing robust early-season growth, with surface mass balance (SMB) gains above the norm.
[DMI]
The latest data from the Danish Meteorological Institute (via Polar Portal) shows Greenland's SMB for 2024-2025 is tracking above the 1981-2010 average, reflecting a continuation of recent years’ trend toward increased seasonal accumulation.
The cumulative SMB for this season (below — blue line in the bottom panel) is tracking above the average, signaling, so far at least, another year of strong growth.

Sizable snow and ice gains were seen on Greenland over the weekend, nudging SMB readings above the 1981-2010 average.
The past 3-days saw approx. 17 Gts amass...

Greenland Ice Sheet Gained 8 Gigatons Yesterday
«
Reply #9 on:

The latest data from Greenland reveals a stark in the season's fortunes, the sheet is accumulating mass at an impressive pace.
Yesterday alone (March 16) saw 8 Gigatons accumulate—enough to bury Central Park under 8,400 feet of snow/ice:
[DMI]
This has helped push the cumulative SMB for 2024-25 comfortably above the 1981-2010 mean:
[DMI]
If the Greenland Ice Sheet were truly collapsing, as the alarmists claim, then its mass balance would be consistently negative. Yet the data tells a different story. Short-term melting events are cherry-picked by the media, but overall trends remain stable.
The data speaks for itself—Greenland’s ice is holding strong.

Big Gains On Greenland
«
Reply #10 on:

Over the weekend, Greenland’s surface mass balance (SMB) shot up sharply, gaining several gigatons of ice. This spike is part of a consistent trend in recent years — of above-average mass gains compared to the 1981–2010 baseline.
[DMI]
The weekend’s surge isn’t an isolated fluke either. The daily SMB graph shows months of regular accumulation, punctuated by strong gains

Record Ice Gains On Greenland
«

Latest data show that Greenland is accumulating ice at well above average rates—and has been trending that way for over a decade.
As per Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) data, the 2024–25 Surface Mass Balance (SMB) season is tracking significantly above the 1981–2010 baseline—and growing.
As of mid-May, Greenland has gained more than 600 gigatonnes of ice since the season's start, with daily SMB values in May exceeding 6 gigatonnes on May 17:
The May 17 SMB map shows widespread gains across the ice sheet, especially in central and southeastern regions:
And this isn’t a one-off anomaly. Since 2012, Greenland’s SMB has rebounded. Out of the last 12 years, 9 have ended above the 1981–2010 average in net surface mass gain.

Greenland Gains Gigatons Of Mass In June
«
Reply #12 on:

The Greenland Ice Sheet continues to perform well-above expectations, as per latest Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) data.
Daily surface mass balance (SMB) gains throughout the season have been consistently above normal, with frequent spikes exceeding 8 gigatons.
And even as the calendar flips to summer, the SMB gained almost 4 gigatons on June 1:
[DMI]
This is close to a record-setting gain for the time of year. And it has helped push the accumulated SMB well-above the 1981-2010 mean (bottom panel below):
[DMI]
The 2024-25 season is part of a broader recovery trend since 2012, with more seasons than not posting accumulations exceeding the 30-year mean.
The idea of accelerating, irreversible loss from Greenland’s ice sheet is not supported by the data.
As of June 2025, Greenland is gaining ice—not losing it.

On August 14, Greenland’s SMB spiked to near-record-breaking levels.
Widespread accumulation dominated the ice sheet on Thursday, particularly the south, with daily gains hitting 2 gigatons — an impressive spike for the date, potentially the largest mid-August daily gain ever recorded.
[DMI]
The cumulative SMB remains far above the 1981-2010 mean (bottom section below):

The Arctic’s cold core has tightened dramatically.
At Summit Station, Greenland temperatures plunged to -60.4C (-76.7F) during the early hours of Feb 24, the lowest reading of the season anywhere in the Northern Hemisphere, besting the previous seasonal low of -59C (-74.2F) set in Delyankir, Russia.
All eyes remain on Greenland, with record cold possible as the week progresses.
The DMI is forecasting surface temperatures of -67C (-88.5F) which would approach the coldest temperature ever recorded in the Northern Hemisphere — currently the -93.3F (-69.6C) set on Dec 21, 1991 (during the aftermath of the Pinatubo eruption).
Across nearby Nunavut, temperatures dropped below -40C (-40F) on Monday as blizzard conditions swept multiple communities. Strong winds pushed wind chills to -65C (-85F), including at Taloyoak, where exposure became dangerous within minutes.
Farther west, Eureka tanked to -50.4C (-58.7F) — the first -50C reading of the season in Canada.
This is a consolidated Arctic reservoir, and it is feeding major systems downstream...

The exceptional cold spell over Greenland persists.
Summit just posted a low of -65.3C (-85.5F), 2C shy of the station’s February record, with wind chills tanking to -91.5C (-132.7F).
The Klinck AWS is officially recognized as Greenland’s all-time record holder, with -69.6C (-93.3F) measured on 22 Dec 1991 (the lowest near-surface air temperature ever recorded in the Northern Hemisphere). But the station is no longer active.
Confusion continues to circulate online as some commentators conflate temperature records from different facilities. Older Danish-era stations (Klinck) and the current U.S.-operated camps (Summit) are often mixed together.
Regardless, Greenland’s high interior is approaching historic benchmarks.
The DMI hints there could be colder to come.
Meanwhile, at the bottom of the world, Antarctica is sliding into its winter phase.
On Feb 24, South Pole Station logged its first seasonal sub -50C (-58F):
As solar input fades over the Antarctic Plateau, radiational cooling increases and temperatures step lower.
And speaking to a ‘fading Sun’, today marks the third spotless day in a row:

Greenland’s Rare Late-April Ice Gains
«

Greenland is still adding mass into late April.
Daily surface mass balance has been spiking well above the 1981–2010 average in recent days, with roughly 7 gigatons posted on April 21 alone:
Snowfall has continued to reload the ice sheet, pushing broad, sustained gains. Losses remain confined to narrow coastal strips, which is typical — but the scale and persistence of the accumulation this late is not.
These gains sit at the edge of the record:

Greenland’s surface mass balance (SMB) has spiked sharply in recent days, with April 27 taking the biscuit — around 8 gigatons accumulated on Monday, well above the 1981–2010 average for late April.
Daily accumulation has repeatedly pushed into the upper range since mid-month:
