Winter blast to leave states reeling before severe storms this week Aust..
« Reply #181 on: April 12, 2026, 08:39:34 AM »
Multiple states are facing an early sample of winter this week as storms and a cold front sweep Australia's south-east.
Melbourne is facing a week of overcast skies and showers, with temperatures to fall from a top of 27 degrees on Thursday to a top of 17 degrees on Saturday and Sunday, and lows of 10 degrees or just below through the weekend.
Canberra will get as cold as just two degrees on Sunday and Monday, while lows of 9 degrees on the weekend are expected in Adelaide and 7 degrees in Hobart.

snow-and-damaging-winds-in-tasmania

https://www.weatherzone.com.au/news/drifting-snow-and-damaging-winds-in-tasmania/1891303
Strong winds continue to howl across much of Tasmania today, including Mt Mawson where snow has been falling much of the day and snow drifts continue to grow. Damaging wind gusts exceeding 100km/h have been observed in some locations, including the following peak gusts:

106km/h at Hogan Island at 1:00pm

102km/h at Mount Wellington at 10:30am

For the second day in a row, a severe weather warning for damaging winds has been issued for parts of Tasmania.

These winter-like conditions can be attributed to a polar air mass which has roared over Tasmania in the wake of a powerful cold front. In addition to the strong winds and drifting snow, this outbreak of polar air has brought subfreezing temperatures to parts of the state this morning:

Mount Wellington fell to -3.0°C at 3:48am

Liawenee dropped to -1.8°C at 3:14am

strong cold front overnight Wednesday AUST
« Reply #187 on: May 03, 2026, 08:26:23 AM »
A brief spell of wintry weather is forecast to impact Tasmania, Victoria and southern NSW on Thursday 7th and Friday 8th from a blast of cold winds from the deep Southern Ocean.

Cold SW winds and accompanying showers following the passage of a strong cold front overnight Wednesday will fall as snow during Thursday, down to low levels across the Victorian Alps, the Snowy Mountains and including Tasmania Highlands. With the freezing level set to hover around 1000 metres during Thursday, this could see snow falling to as low as 800 metres about Victoria and Tasmania.

Frigid temperatures have set in across southeastern Australia, with showers, small hail, snowfalls and icy winds all part of the mix on what promises to be the coldest day of 2026 to date in many locations.

After a cold front ushered in a polar airmass overnight, this was the scene in the village square at Victoria’s Mt Buller ski resort, about three hours northeast of Melbourne, just after 9am.

Three Australian states have broken May heat records, with one capital city smashing a 144-year-old record.
The Tasmanian capital of Hobart recorded its hottest ever May day yesterday, exceeding the previous record of 25.7 degrees, Weatherzone reports.
The city hit 26.9 degrees just after 3pm, more than 12 degrees above its average May maximum of 14.6 degrees.

Adelaide is facing its biggest rainfall of the year
« Reply #190 on: May 17, 2026, 08:22:20 AM »
Adelaide is facing its biggest rainfall of the year so far after a drier start to 2026.
The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast up to 20mm of rain today for the city, followed by 15mm tomorrow, and smaller falls in the following days.
Some forecast models suggest up to 40mm could fall in total.
It's a welcome change for the South Australia capital, which has been notably dry for months.
Weatherzone catalogued that the first four months of 2026 were wetter than usual across most parts of South Australia – except for Adelaide and its surrounding areas.
That pattern also applies to the past four years, which saw above-average rain in the north of the state, and lower than average falls to the south and south-east.

A change in the weather pattern over Australia
« Reply #192 on: May 24, 2026, 08:28:39 AM »
A change in the weather pattern over Australia will cause a dynamic mix of weather in the country’s southeast and southwest next week, with rain, thunderstorms, snow and potentially damaging winds on the cards.

Over the last few days, large areas of Australia have experienced benign weather under the influence of a large and slow-moving high pressure system. This high has acted like a shield in the atmosphere, keeping strong cold fronts and low pressure systems away from Australia.

Days before winter officially begins, Australians are getting a preview of what's in store for the next three months – and it might not be the season many were expecting.
After a warmer-than-usual autumn, the Bureau of Meteorology's long-range outlook shows that much of the country is heading for a double dose of milder daytime conditions and warmer-than-normal nights.
Meanwhile, the southern half of the continent is on track for a parched winter, with rainfall expected to fall well short of typical totals.

Explosive cyclogenesis is underway over the eastern Indian Ocean
« Reply #194 on: May 31, 2026, 09:14:58 AM »
https://www.weatherzone.com.au/news/a-bombing-low-is-brewing-off-wa-heres-what-makes-it-dangerous/1891382
Explosive cyclogenesis is underway over the eastern Indian Ocean, where a rapidly deepening low pressure system is setting parts of southwest Western Australia up for a wild weekend of damaging to destructive winds, heavy rain, thunderstorms and dangerous seas. Models show the low’s central pressure plunging by an average of about 25 hPa in 24 hours, a dramatic pressure fall that can turn an ordinary low into a powerful “bombing low”.

A low becomes a “bombing low” through a process called explosive cyclogenesis, when its central pressure falls unusually quickly in 24 hours. This rapid pressure drop usually happens when powerful atmospheric ingredients line up. On Sunday morning, model guidance shows an intense jet stream, roughly 9 to 10 km above the ground, with winds near 300-310 km/h over southwest WA (image 1). That is an exceptionally strong upper-level jet, well above the 180 km/h benchmark that EUMeTrain cites as being associated with developing explosive cyclogenesis, based on Lim and Simmonds (2002). This powerful jet helps air evacuate from above the low, allowing surface pressure to fall more rapidly.

Residents of Qld were finally enticed to break out the doonas last night
« Reply #195 on: June 07, 2026, 09:07:36 AM »
Residents of Qld were finally enticed to break out the doonas last night as cold and dry air spread over much of the state, leading to the coldest morning of 2026 to date.

Clermont in Central Qld was the state’s coldest location, dropping to -0.4°C this morning. Charleville followed closely behind, falling to 0.0°C.

Amongst the many other locations that endured a relatively frigid morning are:
    Roma (0.4°C)
    Thangool (1.5°C)
    Williamson (1.7°C)
    Blackall (2.4°C)
    Hughenden (2.6°C)
    Mount Isa (3.6°C)
    Proserpine (3.9°C)
Even adjacent parts of the NT and northern NSW were subjected to single digit temperatures. Glen Innes (a usual suspect on the NSW Northern Tablelands) dropped down to -3.0°C this morning. Further afield, Cobar (0.3°C) and Bourke (0.7°C), as well as Borroloola (6.6°C) in the NT’s northeast all clocked in their coldest morning of the year so far.

Several eastern states are in the firing line of severe wind after a “bombing low” battered Perth and WA.

The western coastline of the state has been battered by a low that has brought wind gusts of nearly 130km/h and 60mm of rain to parts of the state.

Now the rest of Australia could soon be in the path of the storm, with several severe weather warnings in place across eastern states.

"The system will march east and bring a spell of wintry weather to SA, Victoria, Tasmania and NSW through the late this week, including strong to damaging winds, heavy showers, isolated thunderstorms and alpine snow," Hernandez said.

Each state has its own warnings, with multiple regions set to be impacted, including the Alpine regions of New South Wales, which could face wind gusts of 125km/h from tomorrow morning, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

Parts of the Blue Mountains, including tourist hotspot Katoomba, could see winds of 60km/h, with gusts reaching up to 90km/h.

Large swathes of Victoria will also be hit by the extreme winds from early this afternoon,

Rain spreading across increasingly damp SA, and more to come
« Reply #197 on: June 14, 2026, 08:47:42 AM »
Barely a week after a soaking, much of South Australia has had rain this weekend, substantial in some of the state's west and south, with more on the way.

Image: satellite, radar, rain observations in the 24 hours to 9am 13 June 2026. Source: Weatherzone.

Recent rain in the 24 hours to 9am was the heaviest in -

    2 years at Yankalilla (26mm),
11 months at Parawa (44mm), Port Lincoln (27mm), Coulta (28mm) and Inman Valley ( 24mm), and
3-4 months at Ceduna (31mm), Streaky Bay (26mm), Lock (21mm), Kingscote (20mm) and Cummins (18mm).

It was also the heaviest June rain in 31 years at Wirrulla (19mm), 13 years at Lock, 12 years at Coulta and 10 years at Ceduna.

In the first few days of this month, a 48-hour wet spell bringing widespread 20-to-50mm (as much as 100mm or so in the Adelaide Hills) got winter of to a damp start across the state. The ground was already reasonably well watereed from two rain events in the last few weeks of May.

All up, the 30 days to 13th June has been the wettest 30 days in -

    5 years at Minlaton (117mm)
4 years at Port Lincoln (120mm), Darke Peak (104mm) and Port Victoria (103mm)
3 years at Mount Lofty (244mm), Birdwood (158mm), Williamstown (143mm), Cummins (107mm), and
2.5 years in some Adelaide suburbs, including West Terrace (119mm), Burnside (147mm) and Hope Valley (107mm).

This amount of rainfall is roughly twice the monthly average for this time of year and has boosted soil moisture significantly.
