CHINA BREAKS 241 LOW TEMPERATURE RECORDS IN 24HRS
« Reply #20 on: April 25, 2023, 05:39:18 PM »
As forecast, Siberia’s record-breaking April cold sank south over the weekend, engulfing much of Northern/Eastern China.

However, the Arctic plunge proved fiercer than forecast, delivering frozen rains, heavy snows, and hundreds of record lows.

The late wintry cold spell sent the mercury crashing to unprecedented levels for the time of year. On Saturday April 22 alone, 241 stations in Northern China suffered their lowest-daily-highs ever recorded during the latter half of April.

China’s chill is forecast to intensify Monday, but then will mercifully wane as the week progresses.

Looking further ahead though, latest GFS runs foresee another polar outbreak hitting during the first week of May.

More to come…

The rare strong cold front has put the brakes on spring for much China, too, where records are being slain.

The mercury widely dropped by 22C across swathes of Gansu, Shaanxi and Shanxi provinces. Here, a staggering 241 low temperature records were broken on Monday alone; these same regions have also been hit by unseasonable snow.

Heavy snow is rarely seen in April in these parts, explains China’s National Meteorological Center.

According to the Center, many areas have registered their latest accumulating snow since records began. Recently, Shanxi received 24cm (9.4 inches), according to the province’s meteorological service, with record totals falling in southern parts.

The cold and snow “arrived suddenly,” so say the locals.

A farmer in Taiyuan, Shanxi, said that snowfall caught him completely off guard: “Now the fruit trees are covered with snow, the temperature is too low. If the flowers are frozen over time, they won’t bear fruit later,” he was quoted as saying.

Shaanxi’s meteorological service echoed the farmer’s concerns, saying the polar chill will reduce fruit yields due to poor pollination. The service suggest farmers spray nutrient solution on frozen orchards, and add sucrose to reduce the impact of frost damage.

East Asia’s anomalous cold will extend through the week, and then, as shown above, could make a record return early May.

The forecast snow also looks exceptional:

Intense rains lashed a scenic area in China's southern Hunan province on Friday, unleashing flooding that swept away cars, engulfed farmland and prompted evacuations and rescues of stranded people.

China has recently been beset by a combination of heavy rainfall and sizzling hot temperatures that have taken a toll on its agriculture and power consumption.

Rains have pounded the Xiangxi area in Hunan since Thursday, with 314.5 mm of precipitation soaking Baojing County by 2 p.m., shattering a local record, state-backed media reported.

MORE THAN 1,000 NEW COAL POWER PLANTS ARE BEING BUILT–THE MAJORITY IN CHINA
« Reply #23 on: October 01, 2023, 07:10:41 PM »
In total, there are 1,039 new coal fired power plants currently in the works, that’s either ‘under construction’, ‘permitted’ or ‘announced’. The vast majority are located in Asia, namely China, with almost all in the developing world.

According to data courtesy of globalenergymonitor.org, this is the global picture:

RECORD FREEZE GRIPS CHINA
« Reply #24 on: October 17, 2023, 06:42:52 PM »
Exceptional chills have gripped much of China of late, most notably in Qinghai Province of the Tibetan Plateau.

Ezoic
Hala Lake took the ‘cold cherry’ over the weekend. The brackish lake, located in China’s Qilian mountains, bottomed-out at a record-breaking (for mid-Oct) -28.4C (-19.1F) on Sunday, October 15.

It wasn’t the only locale to post anomalous cold (see list below).

And note, many of these readings have gone down as new record lows for this early into a season.

Despite the media’s skewed focus on summertime heat, the majority of Asia has held exceptionally cold in 2023.

One late-April cold spell sent the mercury crashing to unprecedented levels in Northern China, when, on April 22, some 241 stations suffered their lowest-daily-maxes ever recorded (during the latter half of April).

Ezoic
Very rare April snow accompanied the cold, with many Chinese towns and cities posting their latest accumulating snow since records began. Shanxi, for example, received 24cm (9.4 inches) in late April — a new record for both monthly-depth and lateness.

The cold and the snowfall “arrived suddenly,” so said the locals.

A farmer in Taiyuan, Shanxi said that snowfall caught him completely off guard: “Now the fruit trees are covered with snow, the temperature is too low. If the flowers are frozen over time, they won’t bear fruit later,” he was quoted as saying.

The following month, May, was another colder-than-average one for all of China.

Temperatures in cities across northern China hit record lows on Wednesday,
« Reply #25 on: December 21, 2023, 07:58:44 PM »

Temperatures in cities across northern China hit record lows on Wednesday, as authorities issued an alert for extreme cold across swathes of the country.

The national weather office said subzero temperatures smashed records at five stations in the provinces and regions of Shanxi, Hebei and Inner Mongolia in the early hours of Wednesday.

That included a drop to minus 33.2 degrees Celsius (minus 27.8 degrees Fahrenheit) in Shanxi's historic city of Datong and -27C in the nearby county of Yangqu.

In those areas, "notably, the records for all-time low temperatures had already been broken on December 17", the weather office said in a social media post.

The mercury also sank to a record -29.7C in Qingshuihe, Inner Mongolia; -23.3C in Baoding, Hebei; and -22C in Shunping, Hebei.

In Gansu province, where an earthquake late Monday caused the deaths of more than 130 people, groups of survivors spent a freezing Tuesday night huddled around outdoor fires.

Many of them had seen their homes destroyed or rendered unsafe by the magnitude-5.9 tremor, which struck remote villages near the provincial capital Lanzhou.

The cold weather in the capital Beijing began days ago and has caused issues with the city's metro system.
Beijing has recorded its longest cold wave since records began in 1951, CNN reported.

Beijing records longest cold wave in modern history

Beijing records longest cold wave in modern history as heating systems in part of China struggles

Beijing recorded its longest cold wave since records began in 1951 as the biting temperatures and snowfall experienced in the Chinese capital and elsewhere began to ease.

The temperature recorded at Beijing's Nanjiao weather station rose to above zero degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit)Sunday afternoon for the first time in days, state media Beijing Daily reported.

"Since temperature first dropped to below zero degrees on December 11, the temperature had remained below that line for more than 300 hours," Beijing Daily wrote.

A strong cold wave swept through most of China this month, pushing the heating capacity of some cities in northern China to its limit.

China's central province of Henan has seen multiple system failures.

In the city of Jiaozuo, heating was partially halted after a dysfunction at the Wanfang power plant on Friday. The problem was solved on Saturday and heating is expected to resume Sunday night, according to the official newspaper of the city, Jiaozuo Daily.

Two other cities in the province, Puyang and Pingdingshan, have cut heating to most government buildings and state-owned enterprises since Friday to "prioritize limited heating resources for hospitals, schools and residential buildings," according to statements from the two cities' governments.

10 Feet Of Snow Strands 1,000 People In NW China
« Reply #28 on: January 28, 2024, 07:43:47 PM »
Around 1,000 people, mostly tourists, have been stranded in a holiday village in China's northwestern Xinjiang for going a week after avalanches towering 23 feet buried the area, state TV reported.

Road access to Hemu, a popular resort located near the borders of Kazakhstan, Russia and Mongolia, has been completely cut off by 10 consecutive days of heavy snow — a story repeated at locales across Xinjiang's Altay Prefecture.

The heavy snow, 10 feet in some parts, triggered dozens of avalanches along large sections of highways in the Altay mountains.

Work to clear the 31-mile stretch of buried road started a week ago, but has been hindered by relentless snow. Debris such as rocks and tree branches, caught up in the avalanches and mixed in with the snow, have rendered rotary snowplows useless, and so rescuers have had to resort to shovels and excavators.

Helicopters were sent to evacuate those stranded in Hemu, but as with the clearing work, inclement weather has complicated this, and all. A military helicopter scheduled to send supplies to the village was delayed Tuesday due to blizzards.

China is being hit again—for the third time in as many weeks—as a rare February cold wave impacts great swaths of the country.

On Thursday, northwest China''s Xinjiang issued its highest cold wave alert, warning that biting lows and powerful blizzards were about to rip through the region.

The city of Altay duly delivered, dropping from -1C to -40C in a single day, with -50C (-58F) hitting nearby mountainous areas.

China Broke 117 Low Temperature Records On Thursday
China has broken cold, heat and precipitation (rain & snow) records over the past two days.

While anomalous warmth has prevailed in the far south, the majority of the 9.597 million km² country is holding colder than average with the record books reflecting that.

Quick on the heels of the historic -52.3C (-62.1F) posted in Turhong (China's lowest February temperature ever recorded), an additional 117 weather stations endured their coldest February days on Thursday (Feb 22).

As with the Arctic Outbreaks in late-Jan and early-Feb, this latest round of polar cold is proving just as disruptive.

In addition to the low temperature records, Thursday also felled 17 monthly snow depth records.

The extreme weather has not been limited to Henan. Beijing temporarily suspended several suburban train lines after issuing early warnings for thunderstorms and flash floods.

A small town in China's Henan province experienced an unprecedented deluge as it received nearly a year's worth of rain in just 24 hours.

The extreme weather event, part of a shifting pattern of storms moving from southern China to central and northern provinces, has put local authorities on high alert.

Dafengying, a town within the city limits of Nanyang, recorded a staggering 606.7mm (24 inches) of rainfall in a single day, as reported by national weather forecasters. This amount nearly matches the area's average annual rainfall of 800mm, highlighting the extraordinary nature of the event.

Torrential rain and floods have killed seven people and spurred the evacuation of thousands from homes in China's southern Hunan Province, lashed by record rainfall from the remnants of Typhoon Gaemi, state media said yesterday.

All the deaths have been in Hunan province. Heavy rains have been falling on eastern Hunan for days as Tropical Storm Gaemi moved inland after making landfall at typhoon strength in China's neighboring Fujian Province.

Four deaths and three missing people were reported in four villages in Zixing County, Xinhua News Agency said.

The bodies of three other missing people were found in a village in a nearby city, state broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV) said in an online report.

They were victims of a sudden mudslide caused by the rain, the report said.

China issues high heat warnings across 754 regions amid record heat wave
« Reply #34 on: July 06, 2025, 09:36:37 AM »
Authorities in China have issued high heat warnings for 754 provinces, cities, and counties, as the strongest heat wave of 2025 grips East Asia, local media reported Friday.

According to Oriental Daily, citing state media, the warning was first issued at 4.30 pm local time (1330 GMT) and extended into Saturday, with some areas upgraded to a yellow high temperature alert — one of the country’s top-tier heat warnings.

In many parts of the region, temperatures have already exceeded 40°C (104°F), while much of eastern China, the country’s most populous area, is experiencing widespread heat above 35°C (95°F).

Widespread heat exceeding 35°C (95°F) is expected across large parts of the country including the most populous region east China.

The intensifying rainfall forms part of the broader pattern of extreme weather across China due to the East Asian monsoon, which has caused disruptions in the world’s second-largest economy.
Storms in northern China have poured nearly a year's rainfall on Baoding, an industrial city on the doorstep of the capital Beijing, forcing over 19,000 people out of their homes as streets began to go under water and roads were being cut off.

As much as 447.4 mm (17.6 inches) of rain fell in Yi, in the western part of Baoding, in the 24 hours to early Friday morning, and records were reset at a number of weather stations in Hebei province, which Baoding is part of.

Official records show annual rainfall in Baoding averages above 500 mm.

A total of 19,453 people from 6,171 households were evacuated, the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) said in a social media post.

The forecaster did not mention where the residents were moved to, but shared a short clip showing two policemen in neon rain jackets boot-deep on a waterlogged street as rains poured down at night.

The forecaster compared the amount of precipitation to the exceptional rainfall brought by a powerful typhoon in 2023, which inundated the capital Beijing with rains unseen since records began 140 years ago.

Baoding's Zhuozhou, which suffered devastating floods in those rains two years ago, saw access to several bridges and roads cut off after the storms unleashed more than 190 mm of rain by Friday morning.

Northern China has witnessed record-breaking rainfall in recent years, exposing densely populated cities including Beijing to flood risks.

A powerful cold front has slammed into northern China, sending temperatures crashing to mid-winter levels.

On the morning of October 13, the town of Tahe in Heilongjiang province plunged to -17.6C (0.3F), with an automated weather station in the region posting an even colder -22.6C (-8.7F).

Such cold is extraordinary for the first half of October.

Record Snow For Northern India
« Reply #37 on: November 09, 2025, 08:41:27 AM »
Northern India is enduring one of its heaviest early-November snowfalls in years, with areas already in full winter condition.

The broader Kashmir highlands have been buried, including Sonamarg, Baltal, Zojila Pass, Razdan Top, Gurez Valley, Sinthan Top and Peer Ki Gali. While it was Gulmarg that saw the deepest totals, looking more like January than November (video below).

Razdan Top picked up fresh inches, along with surrounding ranges.

Temperatures have dropped below freezing, with more snowy systems forecast through November.

The early timing and depth are significant: Kashmir rarely sees sustained snow this early. The Himalayas have joined the broader Asian pattern of rapid, record-challenging November accumulation.

22 stations in China set new December precipitation records
« Reply #38 on: December 21, 2025, 08:36:06 AM »
At least 22 stations in China set new December precipitation records over the weekend as a widespread cold wave pushed south and east. In the far north, Mohe’s automated station plunged to -38C (-36F), the coldest reading of the season so far.

Snowfall was disruptive across central provinces. In Luoyang, Henan, heavy snows and biting lows left roads and trees coated in ice, snarling transport and weighing down infrastructure not accustomed to such sustained winter conditions.

Snow Hits Central China
« Reply #39 on: January 25, 2026, 08:48:41 AM »
Central China is currently copping its heaviest snowfall of the winter, with cold instantly tightening its energy markets.

Snow depths in Henan are approaching 30 cm (a foot) Tuesday morning (video below) — a high-impact dumping across one of China’s most densely populated provinces, locking in surface cold and sharply raising heating demand.

Domestic LNG prices have turned sharply higher as a result.

Authorities have issued freeze warnings as the cold pushes deeper and looks set to persist into February.
