UK SNOW WARNING UPGRADED TO AMBER: “A DANGER TO LIFE”

Much heavier snowfall than originally forecast will bury large swathes of the UK today (Feb. 11), prompting the UK Met Office to upgrade its Snow Warning to Amber: “a danger to life.”
ravel delays, road and rail closures, and power cuts are expected across Wales, northern England, and Scotland mid-week as a blast of brutal Arctic weather buffets Britain in-between two powerful Atlantic storms “Ciara” and “Dennis.”
Parts of the UK suffered 100mph (161kmh) winds as well as severe flooding on Sunday, leaving more than 20,000 homes STILL without power.
Then Monday rolled around bringing with it heavy, low-level snow to many northern parts as a trough of frigid Polar air plunged anomalously far south:

Storm Dennis has exploded into a bomb cyclone as meteorologists dub it one of the worst North Atlantic storms ever recorded.
No fewer than 40,000 passengers have been affected by travel disruption so far as budget airline easyJet cancels 234 flights from, to and within the UK as the fourth named storm of the year brings 70mph winds and 100mm of rainfall in some areas from Saturday morning.
Storm Dennis will come as a second blow to flood-ravaged communities still recovering from damage caused by heavy rainfall and 80mph winds brought by Storm Ciara last week.

PARTS OF UK AND US SUFFER THEIR LOWEST MAY TEMPERATURES ON RECORD
«

Overnight Wednesday (May 13-14), the mercury in Katesbridge and Castlederg, N. Ireland, plummeted to an extra-duvet-grabbing -6.1C (21F) and -3.9C (25F), respectively, as a wave of brutal Arctic air rode anomalously-far south on the back on a meridional (wavy) jet stream flow.
That -6.1C at Katesbridge is now its lowest May temperature on record, smashing the previous one, the -5.2C set in 1995 (solar minimum of cycle 22).
Wednesday night followed what had been a record-chilly day across the UK — a minimum temperature of -5C (23F) was observed in Tulloch Bridge, Scotland.
The wave of record cold actually engulfed much of Northern Europe overnight Wednesday, as visible in coolwx.com‘s temperature animation:

In England, the temperature reached 33C (92F) at Heathrow Airport on Thursday, making it the hottest day of the year so far, according to the UK's Meteorological Office. That was still short of the June record of 35C (96F) set in 1976.
(I thought records were set last year).

Britain bakes in 96F blast as nation swelters under the most severe heatwave on

Meteorologists also expect Britain to have the second longest run of consecutive 90F (32C) days on record. While the period is unlikely to get close to the 15 days in 1976, it today tied with the second-placed five days in 1995.
The record for the longest spell of 95F (35C) is three days - set in 1976 and 1990 - which this week could match. And the UK has only had heat of 98F (36.7C) on four days in history, one of which was recorded only 12 days ago.

Several roads across Northern Ireland have been blocked by fallen trees after Storm Ellen caused damage across the island of Ireland overnight.
TrafficwatchNI reported fallen trees in all six counties in Northern Ireland, with County Fermanagh worst affected.
NIE Networks is currently reporting a number of power cuts, affecting about 430 customers, some of which it has attributed to severe weather.
In the Republic of Ireland, power cuts affected at least 194,000 customers.

Following on from the UK’s historically cool July (its coldest since 1988), AUTUMNAL conditions will return to British Isles and western Europe this weekend, with Briton’s bracing for their coldest August Bank Holiday on record.
Rare summer frosts will grip parts of the UK over the next few mornings, as the mercury takes an unseasonable plunge thanks to a violently descending trough of Arctic air — a phenomenon which is predicted to increase due to the historically low solar activity we’re receiving and its impact on the jet stream: weakening its tight ZONAL flow to more of a

The mercury could top out at 88F (31C) in parts of southern England next Tuesday (left: people walk along the sea front next to Southsea beach in Hampshire today). The 'tropical continental air pushing up from a southerly direction in combination with light winds' will see temperatures up to 77F (25C) in the UK on Sunday and then 84F (29C) by Monday (three day weather forecast, top inset), according to Met Office forecaster Bonnie Diamond. Britons are set to make the most of the weekend's weather (top and bottom right: people in Christchurch, Dorset, today), with it being the last time large groups will be allowed to socialise before new Covid-19 restrictions are introduced....read

Record cold in Northern Ireland
«

Not just for one town, but for all of Northern Ireland.
Saturday night was the coldest September night on record for Northern Ireland, the Met Office has confirmed.
Katesbridge, in County Down, fell to a chilly -3.7C.
The hamlet is (supposedly) well known for often recording the island of Ireland’s highest and lowest temperature.
Even so – a record is still a record.

Extreme weather: October downpour sees UK's wettest day on record

month
The UK had its wettest day on record earlier this month - with enough rain falling to fill Loch Ness, according to the Met Office.
Data shows Saturday 3 October - the day after Storm Alex - brought the highest volume of rainfall since 1891.
An average of 31.7mm (1.25in) fell across the whole of the UK, beating the previous record of 29.8mm (1.17in) seen in August 1986.
To illustrate the significance of this milestone, the head of the Met Office's National Climate Information Centre said the downpours were enough to fill Britain's largest lake, which has a capacity of 7.4 cubic kilometres.
Mark McCarthy added: "In climate statistics, 2019 will be remembered for possessing the UK's hottest day, whereas 2020 will be associated with rainfall records.
"It is exceptional to have 30mm to 50mm or more of rain falling so extensively across the UK - from the south coast of England to the north coast of Scotland - in a single day."

Britain is set to be hit by an Arctic blast as temperatures plummet to -7C with forecasters issuing severe warnings of snow and ice following days of stormy conditions.
The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for snow and ice across much of England and Wales, with some areas told they could see wintry showers with up to 5cm of snow falling on higher ground and up to 10cm on the Pennines and North York Moors.
