Orange County’s largest city earned meteorologists’ recognition as the hottest place in America on Monday, Oct. 21, amidst the beginning of a heat wave expected to scorch Southern California for most of the week.

Anaheim logged the highest temperatures of the day with readings peaking at 98 degrees (36.6 C), the National Weather Service reported. Those figures surpassed earlier predictions by five degrees.

Nearby Yorba Linda matched the San Pasqual Valley in San Diego County for the second-warmest temperatures of the day at 97 degrees (36.1 C). Those numbers topped the 96-degree highs (35.5 C) measured in Death Valley, Fullerton, Chino, Long Beach, Escondido and Santee, all tied as the third-hottest areas in the United States on Monday.
