This isn't exaggeration, winter has returned to Russia, in May.

Freezes have struck Kaliningrad to Krasnoyarsk, and Murmansk to Krasnodar, while heavy snows have been observed from the northwest, through central regions, to the Volga, over the Urals, to Western and Central Siberia, and into the North Caucasus.

"Blizzards are raging in the Russian North, the Polar Urals, and northern Siberia," reports gismeteo.ru. "While in the middle latitudes, snow cover, rare for this time, has been restored."

The snow has been fiercest in and around the Urals where tens of thousands of people have lost power, in the Sverdlovsk region for one.

The water supply here has also been disrupted, according to local authorities.


Spring blizzards are raging across Russia.

Falling trees have snapped power lines, and cellular communications are also down.

Speaking to the cold, the soil temperature in the Kushchevsky district of the Krasnodar Territory—for example—dropped to -2.4C (27.7F) on May 5. This is classified as 'dangerous' in May due to risk of frost damage to tender crops and budding fruits.

A frost warning was issued for May 5 and 6, recently extended to May 7.

Freezes have also swept the Republic of Adygea, in the Stavropol Territory.

Headed west, Moscow has also been enduring freezing lows. Muscovites could also see a few settling flakes in the coming days. The cold is set to persist and all, with -3C (26.6F) forecast later in the week and wet snow. "Almost the entire week the temperature will be 10 degrees [C] below normal, [akin] to early April," reports hmn.ru.

Likewise in St. Petersburg, lows of -5C (23F) have been registered after Arctic air crashed south through the Kara and Barents seas and down through Scandinavia. Settling snow is also expected here by Wednesday.

Note: Scandinavia has endured brutal chills this winter and spring. Savukoski Tulppio has posted a -30C (-22F) reading every month from November to April. The last time -30C was measured for six consecutive months in Finland was 45 years ago, in Kittilä Pokka, in 1979.

Fierce Arctic air has gripped Eastern Europe and much of Russia of late, tanking temperatures down to as low as -6C (21.2F), to record-low levels for the time of year.

The below data comes courtesy of Russia's national meteorological service (Гидрометцентр России, Gidrometcentr Rossii), and via hmn.ru.

Famed for its rich, deep, black soil, Chernozem (the "Black Earth Belt") has been hit by hard frosts.

In Valuyki, thermometers dipped to -3.4C (25.9F) on May 10, smashing the previous record-low for the month of May of 0.8C set back in 1952.

Records also fell in In Yelets (-1.2C/29.8F), in Voronezh (-1.8C/28.8F), and in Tambov (-2.3C/27.9F) — to name just three others.

Frosts have ravaged the Volga region and all this May, on three separate occasions (to May 12).

In Balashov, a low of -4.4C (24.1F) was recently observed, a reading 2.2C below the old record which had stood since 1950. While in Alexandrov Gai, a rare -3.4C (25.9F) was noted.

In Sorochinsk, located in the Orenburg region, a low of -2.3C (27.9F) was posted, breaking the previous May record of -1.7C (28.9F) set in 1971. The average daily temperature here throughout May has held 11 degrees C below the historical average.

Record lows were also posted ​​on the night of May 10 across the Rostov region, in Chertkovo and Gigant — to name two.

Frosts of -3.3 (26.1F) and -3.8 (25.2F) were suffered in Uryupinsk and Frolovo, respectively. They also reached Lugansk which shivered through -3.1 (26.4F), a mark that busted the locale's previous May extreme of -1.1C (30F) was from 1950.

Extremes May chills also swept the likes of the Yaroslavl region on May 11, as they did both the Kostroma and Orenburg regions.

While in the city of Vladimir, thermometers dipped to -1.8C (28.8F) and so set a new record-low for the month of May, besting the previous record by 0.6C, from 2017.

According to the head of Russia’s national meteorological service, Roman Vilfand, the first 10-days of May in the European section of the country (all 3.969 million km² of it) will be recognized as "the coldest in the history of observations."

As reported yesterday, this region has endured three separate Arctic onslaughts so far this month, breaking long-standing May temperature records on each occasion.

Vilfand said the area has faced an onslaught of brutal air masses crashing south from the Arctic Ocean, rare for the time of year, which has seen the air temperature across western Russia hold some 10C below climatic norms.

This unprecedented May cold has forced Gazprom (a state-owned multinational energy corporation) to step up its energy supply. As per reports, consumers have been supplied record volumes of gas this month, levels comparable to winter.

"For ten days in a row —from May 3 to May 12— gas supplies from the Unified Gas Supply System of Russia (USG) have been higher than the previous record value," the company said in a statement — the old record of UGSS 827.6 million cubic meters of gas (set on May 5, 2022) has been bested by a new "absolute peak ... of 904.8 million cubic meters".

Parts of Moscow were flooded due to heavy rainfall on Thursday, disrupting public transport and submerging cars and homes across the Russian capital.

The rains caused one of the city's rivers, the Yauza, to overflow near Aqueduct Park in northeastern Moscow.

Muscovites could be seen navigating through thigh-deep water, while ducks from the Yauza swam along pedestrian paths, local media reported.

In the Moscow suburb of Shchyolkovo, two people were reportedly killed by a fallen tree.

The Moscow region has been hit by three "abnormally" rainy days in a row, with some districts in the capital receiving nearly a month's worth of rain, the Phobos weather center said.

Heavy rainfall led to the collapse of a reservoir dam in the Ural Mountains region of Chelyabinsk on Friday night, Russian authorities said, forcing residents of nearby villages to evacuate their homes.

A dam at the Kialimskoye reservoir, measuring around 500 meters long, was unable to hold back rising waters and broke, unleashing a flood torrent toward four villages in the Karabash district of the Chelyabinsk region.

A video shared on social media showed the dam being washed away by a powerful current of water, which poured into the surrounding area. Another video, filmed by someone who sought safety on the roof of a building, showed fast-flowing water engulfing homes, cars and trees.

Following several days of heavy snowfall, Russia has recorded some of the Northern Hemisphere's lowest temperatures of the season so far (outside of Greenland and the Alps—notably Mont Blanc's record-breaking 24.6C/-12.3F).

The harsh Siberian winter is arriving early this year.

Sebyan-Kyuyol reached a low of -23.9C (-11F) on Tuesday, October 8; Susuman saw -22.8C (-9F); Batagay-Alyta posted -20.6 C (-5.1F); Kolymskaya hit -20.4 C (-4.7F), and Taskan-In-Magadan bottomed-out at -20.3 C (-4.5F).

As of mid-October, over 70% of Russia is now blanketed in snow, with fresh accumulations recently covering the Urals and parts of Southern and Eastern Siberia.

Early accumulations of snow have been reported in areas like Yakutia, Magadan, Chukotka, Taimyr, and Yamal, signaling winter's rapid advance across the country.

These early-October snows have been accompanied by significant temperature drops and all. In Eastern Siberia, temperatures have already fallen to -11 to -16C (12.2 to 3.2F), while the Urals and Southern Siberia have seen frosts nearing -10C (14F).

Further to the north’s biting cold reported yesterday, temps have sank even further:

This morning (Oct 17), Verkhoyansk saw -33.2C (-27.8F), the coldest temperature so early in October since 1989, when it reached -33.4C (-28.1F) on the same date, and also the lowest temp of the season in the Northern Hemisphere (excluding Greenland).

Northern Russia is experiencing an unusually early winter as heavy snowfall blankets vast regions. The north, in particular, is facing temperatures well below average, bringing conditions more typical of mid-winter.

On October 23, the latest cold front swept in, dumping significant snowfall to southeastern Evenki in Krasnoyarsk Krai, among other regions, where more than 30 cm (a foot) now lay on the ground — rare for the month of October.

Much of Russia, particularly its central regions, is experiencing a polar outbreak that has brought record-breaking snowfall.

By the morning of Sunday (Nov 24), Tver reported a depth of 27 cm (10.6 inches), which comfortably surpassed the previous November snow record of 21 cm (8.3 inches).

Likewise, the western Moscow Region, including Mozhaisk, Volokolamsk, and Klin, all record snow depths north of 20 cm (7.9 inches)—again setting records.

While in the Smolensk Region, the areas of Yelnya, Vyazma, and Gagarin observed 25 cm (9.8 inches). But it was the Kaluga Region's of Spas-Demensk and Mosalsk that took the top spot, reporting 29 cm (11.4 inches).

A powerful winter system is unleashing chaos across Siberia and the Russian Far East, delivering record snow, hurricane-force winds, and paralyzing blizzards across multiple regions.

Storm warnings have been in effect for the Taimyr Dolgano-Nenets Municipal Region, the Turukhansk District, and the Evenki Municipal Region. Whiteout conditions and fierce northwest winds topping 80 mph have swept these parts.

The Amur Region is another buried under unprecedented snowfall. From Nov 25 - 27, three times the normal monthly snow has accumulated here, and records are falling. Blagoveshchensk, for example, has busted its benchmark set in 1940. While in Tiksi, blizzard conditions have raged for four consecutive days now, and are expected to persist until Nov 29.

The cyclone responsible will pass by the weekend, to be replaced by clearer skies and temperatures of -20C (-4F), and beyond.

The remote settlement of Saskylah in Yakutia, Russia plunged to -7.7C (18.1F) — one of the coldest June temperatures ever recorded there.

It’s mid-June, a time when even Siberia should be thawing. Yet Saskylah is flirting with full-blown winter, a deep freeze driven by stubborn Arctic air descending south, combined with crystal-clear skies that let the heat bleed out overnight.

Ground-level factors like lingering snow and reflective permafrost only deepened the chill.

Yakutia (at 3,083,523 km2) has a coldest-ever July temperature of -2.1C (28.2F) — this mid-June chill (-7.7C) was exceptional.

Much of Eurasia is shivering, with vast swathes of Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and Russia enduring temperatures far below seasonal norms—as much as 12C below in some parts.

In Ukraine, meteorologist Natalka Didenko warns of "a cold atmospheric front slicing through the country," bringing gusty northwest winds and a marked temperature drop.

Segyan-Kyuyol, a remote village in Russia’s Sakha Republic, just logged a brutal -5.2C (22.6F) on June 21—the coldest June temperature in its recorded history (books dating back to 1938).

Segyan-Kyuyol isn’t new to winter extremes, but such cold in late June is unheard of.

The Siberian settlement of Tiksi just recorded summer snow and heavy, all-day frost.

Temperatures are routinely dropping below freezing. A recent low of -1.8C (28.8F) came just shy from the town’s coldest-ever July reading.

Snowfall reached multiple inches, accumulating during what's supposed to be the northern settlement' season of endless sunlight. — a phenomenon not seen in years.

The sun never sets this time of year, but even daily highs are struggling to climb above freezing, topping out at just 0.5C (32.9F).

Torrential rains triggered flash floods in Moscow on Tuesday, inundating roads and disrupting transit across the Russian capital.

Videos posted on social media showed cars submerged in murky water, traffic backed up on flooded highways and water pouring into tunnels and underground parking areas.

Authorities said parts of the city received a month's worth of rain in under two hours. No one was reported injured.





City transportation officials urged residents to use public transit, though service was disrupted at several metro stations and on the Aeroexpress train to Sheremetyevo Airport.

The rainstorm followed a heat wave over the weekend and is part of a broader weather pattern affecting central Russia. Southern regions have seen temperatures exceed 40°C (104°F) in recent days.

Anomalous cold is gripping much of Russia. Cold records are falling. Crops are under stress.

Recently, Sebyan-Kyuyol in Yakutia shivered through -3.2C (26F) — the coldest July temperature ever recorded at the site. Yakutia is known for wild temperature extremes, but July usually brings mild weather, with average lows far above freezing.

And it’s not isolated.

A powerful mass of polar air remains locked over Russia, breaking summer cold records across the Urals and delivering one of the most extreme July cold snaps on record.

In Izhma, in the Ural region, the mercury plunged to -3C (26.6F) — a reading that will likely, once confirmed, represent the coldest peak-summer temperature ever recorded there. It’s freezing. In high summer.

To the north in Vorkuta, thermometers dropped to -0.7C (30.7F) — just 0.3C shy of its all-time July record low. Vorkuta typically endures long, brutal winters, but the region's summers, as short and cool as they are, rarely come anywhere close to freezing.

Elsewhere, Ust-Shugor registered -2.4C (27.7F), which ties its all-time July record low.

This a potent Arctic air intrusion — a cold anomaly the media will neglect to mention its in 'baking' climate reports.

Across the Balkans, autumn has been shoved aside by midwinter.

In Skopje, North Macedonia, the high on October 2 barely scraped 7.1C (44.8F)—a staggering 13C (23F) below the seasonal norm, more typical of December.

Today (Oct 3) brings the peak of the outbreak.

From Sarajevo to Pristina, and into the hills around Sofia, snow is expected to reach down to 500–600 meters (1,640–1,970 feet) — virtually unheard of for early October. Indeed, the magnitude of this cold has been labelled once-in-a-lifetime.

On Sunday, Verkhoyansk, Yakutia plunged to -27.2C (-17F), marking its fourth consecutive morning below -25C (-13F).

Such early-season cold has never been recorded in October since observations began in 1885.
And now Monday morning has just extended the stretch to six, with a reading of -25.6C (-14.1F).

Russia closed October under a wave of brutal cold, with multiple stations in Yakutia plunging below -37C (-35F) — the lowest readings of the season so far.

Baimka-Baimra led with -37.9C, followed closely by Oymyakon at -37.1C, Nera at -37C, and Delyankir at -36.5C — all within Siberia’s core cold basin, where winter has now firmly taken hold.

Further east, Anadyr in Chukotka dropped to -27.4C (-17.3F) on October 30 — its second-lowest October temperature since records began way back in 1898 (just 0.8C shy of the all-time monthly record).

The early-season chill underscores the rapid onset of winter across northern Russia, with widespread snow cover deepening not only in Russia (now over 50% covered), but also across Mongolia and parts of China.
