Parts of drought-stricken South East Queensland are experiencing an unprecedented dry spell, with some regional centres going several months without recording a drop of rain.

Warwick has not recorded any rainfall for 72 days, breaking the previous record of 58 days set in 2017.

The situation is similar in the small town of Rathdowney, where locals have not experienced a dry stretch this long since the rain-monitoring station opened in 1973.

It has not rained in Ipswich and Allora for almost 50 days.

Meteorologist Harry Clark said Queensland was in the dry stage of its weather cycle.

Temperatures and rainfall were below the long-term August average for South Australia's capital city.

Adelaide's West Terrace site only received around 68% (42mm) of the long term average for the month (62mm), while the Kent Town site recorded just over 50mm, which is 74% of the monthly average (68mm).

Almost all of the month's rain fell on Thursday 8th/Friday 9th and Monday 19th, in association with a pair of cold fronts followed by showery southwesterly winds.

August 2019's mean temperature was 1.0 degrees below average at Kent Town and 0.5 degrees below average at West Terrace.

Thermometers plunged across Tasmania last month with a number of locations either busting or equaling long-standing low temperature records. And looking at latest GFS runs, there’s a lot more of that anomalous cold on the way as Australia enters September and meteorological spring.

Devonport, located on Tasmania’s north coast, where the Mersey River meets Bass Strait, equaled its coldest-ever August minimum avg. temp last month, with 3.5C (38.3F) observed at its airport, the city’s official measuring station.

After checking data from the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM), the only other time the mercury has averaged a reading that low in the month of August was back in 2015.

For reference, Devonport AP’s August avg. min stands at 5C (41F).

The town of Rutherglen equaled its coldest-ever August on record in, 104 years of observations, with an average reading of just 7.1C (44.8F) which matched the previous record from 1994 (approaching solar minimum of cycle 22).

Deniliquin Airport’s 8.9C (48F) tied its all-time record-lowest August mean temp from 2008 (solar minimum of cycle 23).

Swan Hill Aerodrome’s average of 9.1C (48F) busted the previous all-time record low of 9.3C (48.7F) also from 2008 (solar mini of cycle 23).

Both Albury and Mangalore Airports observed their lowest August mean temperature since 1994 (approaching solar minimum of cycle 22) .

While Tatura ISA and Wangaratta Aero each just recorded their lowest August mean temperature since 1997 (solar minimum of cycle 22).

The above are all average temperatures over the coarse of the entire month by the way, not one-off daily blips (of which there are also many). And, as also mentioned above, the BOM’s official website states, “most districts experienced nights 2C cooler than average.”

The coldest town in South Australia on Wednesday morning was Yunta, east of Port Augusta, where a low of -3.2C was recorded just after 6am.

Elsewhere, Murray Bridge woke up to a bitter -3.1C, while Snowtown, Kingscote and Kadina were sitting at -2.3C, -2.2C and -1.7C respectively.

Strathalbyn, southeast of Adelaide, couldn’t escape the cold either with a low of -0.2C.

For all six towns, it was the coldest morning recorded in September.

Parts of southern Australia see their lowest back-to-back minimums this late in the year in more than a century.

Monday morning was the coldest morning this late in the year in more than 25 years in Kingscote (0C), more than 15 years at Robe (0.8C) and 14 years at Stenhouse Bay (8.3C).

Further east, Victoria’s Rutherglen dipped to -2.1Cs on Sunday and -0.9C on Monday, well below their October average low of six degrees. It was also the first pair of mornings below zero C this late in the year on record. Records date back more than a century, to 1913.

Perth, in Australia's west, has beaten a 122-year-old temperature record. On Saturday, the thermometer reached 40.4 degrees Celsius (104.7 degrees Fahrenheit) in the city and was even higher at the airport. This beats the previous record for this month, indeed for the whole of spring, set in 1897.

NSW was a "state of extremes" as severe storms lashed Sydney, downing trees and powerlines and cutting off power to thousands of homes, while snow fell in Thredbo and parts of the state sweltered.

Wild weather hammered Sydney on Tuesday afternoon after the Bureau of Meteorology forecast a gusty thunderstorm warning for the region earlier in the day.

Winds reached up to 104 kilometres per hour at Fort Denison, closely followed by 96km/h in Holsworthy and 95km/h in Sydney Harbour, the bureau posted on Twitter on Tuesday afternoon.

The Water levels fell to 94.4% to 27.2% in South Australia and New South Wales respectively since 2016 after an rather wet year.
