November 1964: It was cloudier than usual. Good rains brought some relief to Canterbury and Otago, which had been having very dry conditions. In the North Island drying was generally welcome, except in Hawkes Bay and parts of Northland. Lack of sunshine and persistent wind retarded pasture growth in some districts. Gales caused some damage about Foveaux Strait on the 16th and in Taranaki on the 21st.
Rainfall: Rainfall was below average over practically the whole of the North Island, mainly by about 30%. In Manawatu and southern Northland it was less than half the average value. In the South Island rainfall was mainly about 50% above average. However, it was somewhat below normal in North Otago and North Canterbury.
Temperatures: Temperatures were mainly close to average. A cold spell on the 11th brought snow to low levels in inland Southland. Some particularly warm weather was experienced in eastern districts on the 27th-28th, with temperatures over 90F in parts of Hawkes Bay.
Sunshine: Sunshine was below average over most of the North Island and the whole of the South Island [normal at Alexandra]. The deficiency exceeded 30 hours in most coastal and some inland districts of Canterbury, Otago and Southland, also in parts of the West Coast, and in western districts from Manawatu to North Taranaki. The only area favoured with sunshine appreciably above average was northern Northland, with a surplus upwards of 20 hours. [Normal totals in eastern Bay of Plenty, Gisborne and Hawkes Bay].
