Arson at Linwood Library
« on: March 31, 2012, 05:10:04 PM »
We have had loads of fires lit by arsonists in Canterbury since the quakes - and makes you wonder at the mentality of people. They have lit a lot on the East side of here and after putting in security people they have moved further round the city now - hitting abandoned buildings and houses. Fortunately no one has lost their lives as yet.
When caught they should be handed over to the public for sorting out - then they may never light a fire again - ever.

LATEST: An arsonist appears to be responsible for a fire at a Christchurch library this afternoon.

Fire officer Phil Bohnenn said they received multiple 111 calls about 3pm to the fire at Linwood library beside Eastgate mall.

"Flames and thick black smoke rose above the roof," he said.

The library was empty, having moved to a temporary location.

"The fire appeared to have deliberately started in a rear office," he said.

Three fire trucks attended the fire, which broke out in the roof space at the library in Cranley St.

A fire communications spokesperson said there had been "significant damage" to the building.
