The vigorous cold front that blew through southeast Australia on Friday – a particularly strong front for this time of year – led to some of Tasmania’s coldest March temperatures in more than 50 years.
 
Daytime temperatures remained as much as 15 degrees below average in some areas, with snow falling to as low as 600 metres.
 
Liawenee climbed to only two degrees, some 14 degrees below their monthly average and their coldest March day in at least 12 years.
 
Butlers Gorge reached only two degrees, 15 degrees below its monthly average and the coldest March day in 55 years of records.
 
In Hobart, the maximum only briefly touched 12 degrees, the coldest March day since 1957. The winds, around 50km/h through the city, made it feel even colder.
 
Temperatures will still remain well below normal today, with Hobart reaching only 16 degrees, well below the monthly average of 20 degrees.
