Webcams
« on: May 05, 2017, 08:33:59 AM »
Another webcam bit the dust this week. It decided to show the world in black and white which I guess it was trying to reflect the way society is going these days.
Whether it's because we are right on the coastline and the salt air is a slow silent killer, but it's about the 3rd camera to pack up in around 8 years (There are two in operation). I've got to the stage of keeping a spare on hand. The one that lost its colour is a Westmile brand and from memory is cost around $50 on Ebay freight free. The replacement is an identical one, so it will be interesting to see how long it lasts. They run 24 hours a day, so I guess one can't really complain if they only last 2-3 years. I've just bought another spare of the same brand for $35 freight free on Ebay. My cameras are directly wired to ethernet, so are a bit cheaper and reliable than wireless ones.

Whats their sun exposure like? Could that be slowly damaging the image sensor? I'd think a camera should last a fairly long time as long as no water gets in and its not pointed at the sun. Might be interesting to pull apart the dead one and see if there are any visible signs trouble inside. Perhaps some component doesn't have quite enough cooling.
